  • In this video I interview my boss David Kay, one of the directors of the haulage company K Transport. I hope this video can help new drivers find their first job. David also gives us an insight into the company and explains why it is difficult for new drivers to find work.

As i've said before, im a little late to the party, but i must admit i have big respect to the director of your company to give what must be a busy schedule out of his day to do this interview, and a great addition to your channel and to people trying to get into the industry

Really really well done Hayley ... this is the first time I've seen Kay Transport go public ... and they've been in business for many years doing a fine job and representing the industry very professionally ... I can see so much of Davids dad (Tony) in him and he certainly has grown since I accidentally squashed his bicycle (when he was about 5 years old) ... We all know how tough the haulage business is and it's great to see how family concerns are still flourishing ... Well done for getting this interview and a massive thank you to David for giving his time and direct answers ... Best wishes to you and all at the Kay family .... Kind regards from their first apprentice hgv mechanic (1964)

I absolutely love this! great insight, as somebody who is currently going through the hurdles to get my HGV license its great to know that there are employers out there that will consider new drivers. I am currently a multi site manager for a retailer, I have always wanted to become a HGV driver, I used to go to work with my dad and had the time of my life, part of the reason for not pursuing earlier is that I progressed fairly quick in my current role and have spent 15 years with them. Furlough has been the kick up the bum I needed to get the ball rolling, realising that sitting at home is not the life for me. I’ll be knocking K Transports door once passed as it seems they reward hard work and loyalty, their ethics seem aligned with my own. Great Video Hayley, thanks for the insight.

Thanks for putting this video together Hayley. As someone who has been made redundant from a bank after 30 years and decided on HGV driving as a new career, this has answered some of the nagging doubts and internet myths, particularly around driver agencies. Thanks also to David for his insights which have helped to shape how I will approach companies regarding vacancies.

Just want to say we’ll done to your Boss David for giving you the time to chat. It says a loss about a boss who would do this. Well done David. I would add that anyone looking for a job should never give up, Do as much looking, networking as possible. Search the internet and facebook for all haulage companies in their area and as they say “get on your bike” and get out there. Never take no for and answer, keep persevering and be positive. After I completed my school CSEs, I spent every Tuesday off school and on my bike or bus traveling all over Manchester looking for my first job at a haulage in their garage as an apprentice mechanic. This eventually lead to becoming a truck driver of which I spent a happy 10 years in the industry, Well done Haley on how far you’ve come. Be good to see you back on the road.

That was a really good interrogation, and David seems very forward thinking in his hiring and training practices. That's refreshing from the industry (public sector) that I have come from, where the goverment cut-backs meant that training was the first thing to get dropped. Training really should be considered as an investment rather than the short term view of it being a cost. Invest in your staff and they will be even more invested in the company. Thanks also for the interview tips and getting out there and knocking on doors advice.
I have a class 2 licence, but am unable to find work where I live at the moment, so I am contemplating self-funding my class 1 training, but am worried that I will come up against the lack of experience barrier. I need to find a local employer with the foresight and vision of David at K Transport, but up here in a remote part of Scotland.

Great Interview. Both you and David have the passion, positiveness and candidness required as spokes people for the industry. It would have been interesting to here the view of you both regarding women LGV drivers as female school leavers may consider a LGV driving career. Ref; young and inexperienced newly passed or return to workers. I suggest an initial assessment (as K Transport may well do) and ongoing mentoring. Story: I know of a man who "failed" his assessment with one company then went to another, cocked up his reverse (class1), told to have a coffee, try again after assessors feed back (take as many shunts(rude truck drivers saying here) Get Out And Look (GOAL). Six months later his colleagues look to him for tight reversing guidance!

That was really helpful tbf. I’m just starting the process and it’s good to have some inside knowledge of what companies are looking for in a driver and that it’s not a closed door to new drivers.
Can I just clarify- is it under 25 and 2 years or more, if you’re over 25 do you need the 2 years? So, for example, I’m 55, does the 2 years experience apply or is it literally for under 25’s?

insurance seem to be a barrier to most industries at the mo. Seems like national infrastructure should have some level of underwriting rather than just piling in endless streams of EE drivers. we have forgotten perhaps that under times of stress the industry was nationalised ie. post WW2, perhaps there is a case for that to happen again in the way of insurance support to open up the taps for working class indigenous nationals to come into the industry.

Some companys like to take people on with little to no experience as they can mould them into their way of doing things. They also don't realise that what they are doing may be shite compared to other jobs/firms out there.

Seems like the kind of boss you would like work for, but obviously there’s a lot more to book than just it’s cover , but sounded honest.

I am curious if you said to david what would he think of a ex bus driver with 4 years experience coming for a job what would he said?

I can't see him having any issues. Experience on the road is a huge advantage

Just a curiosity, who might be considered rival of K transport, Eddie Stobbart?

    • @TruckDriverHayley
      @TruckDriverHayley  4 роки тому +1

No, Stobarts are a huge company compared to K's. I'd say any medium size company in the local area that also does the same kind of steel work :)

Whats the max point on a licence that your company would take on for a driver job?

  • @steveblick168

That was fantastic and thanks to you both for the in-depth Q&A. What did surprise me from David's answer though, was what to wear during an interview. Me personally, i wouldn't dream of turning up in jeans and a hoodie but then again, somebody could arrive in a suit & tie and be a complete tit throughout the interview. I guess it goes on how the individual comes across and not how they look.

Any advice you would have for someone that is 18 and looking at going into the hgv industry (obviously no hgv driving experience). I dont mind doing agency work but was wondering if you had any advice. Thanks in advance

I would say try and get into any kind of driving, whether it be vans, courier work or HGV. That's what Mr Kay said was favourable from his point of view. Also, don't give up 😊

To do that you'll need an O licence. I wish you all the best with your journey :)
