Complexities of interpreting SA languages in justice system
Вставка

- The importance of accurate interpretation in criminal proceedings cannot be overstated.
It enables defendants to fully understand the charges they are facing and enables them to actively participate in their own defence to ensure a fair trial.
However, lack of legal terminology in some South Africa languages poses a significant challenge to accurate interpretation, particularly in cases where an accused's freedom, rights or even their good name is at stake.
To speak to us about this, we are now joined via teams by Senior Court Interpreter Lungi Ngaphi.

I work in the field. I must confess that it is very challenging.
This lady is a marvel to watch and listen bcos the legal terminology is thin in African languages.
I admire her so much. I love languages, she also exhudes that too in a manner that drives me ❤
She is doing well… keep it up my sister 🙏🏽

I kept reiterating uNodolozana to my family; I grew up in a family that were staunch members of Methodist church and I mostly speak or express myself in isiXhosa albeit not fluent...I'm fascinated by the way they emphatically speak, sing and pray...😂😅😊
Kudos to you Lungi for preserving and growing language in your role as an interpreter. You are an inspiration. Especially learning that you studied in Afrikaans from standard 3 (grade 5) to Matric. Respect 💫
I'm happy for the Spot Light to our Profession 🙏
Have enjoyed watching her, she is amazing ❤
She's just as amazing as a person
I grew up with her, we stayed in the same area and went to the same high school, she was my senior in Adelaide Gymnasium. She was raised by her grandparents who were educated and strict. I don't remember seeng her playing in the streets, she's always been very focused. We grew up looking up to her. She had the longest afro hair I loved. Still remember those days so well.
Intle lonto. Yayintle ke iAdelaide before 1994.
Thanks for bringing her to the fore. I've been looking for her name.

Sis Lungi ndiyamfuna mna
Guys, listen to how mellowed Lungi is ; not trying to impress by using an "accent" , some of our young people especially not coming from multiracial/ middle class and so on schools, feel or rather are made to think they're of a lower class and they end up not talking/ expressing themselves in English...
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Its much better to have a Legal Counsel, these interpreters are not assisting.
I have attended courts since September 2023. Children Court, Criminal Court, Domestic Violence Court.
Last day at court was on the 28th Jan 25.
Yes, Court attendance is Trauma😢
The process needs improvement.
Excellence
Why have our local languages not been developed enough to be able teach scientific, engineering and legal matters.
My intepreter
