It's taken a while for me to come around on them, but there's a certain clunky, angry charm to the Mk III armour that's hard to pass up. Especially since they started doing plastic kits for them!
Would just like to say how much your videos on you tube have helped me get back into the hobby . After losing my job in april due to lockdowns . I started watching your videos and i can say that they have saved my sanity . Keep up the amazing work .
Glad to hear it, although less so about the loss of your job. :/ At the very least I'm still puttering around on my side of things, trying to put these things up for folks!
I like the Gunship Green as it looks a little subtle. I will make up a batch of the wash as it really looks great on the figure. Thanks for sharing this and the wash recipe.
A couple of people have mentioned using the early war German Uniform Green from Vallejo for a slightly richer colour, and that would work well in its place. I prefer the slightly more grey, muted look from this, but everything's a matter of taste!
This is great little tutorial. I'll be sure to give the "Marine Juice" a try sometime. One thing regarding the eyes: The glow effect will be much more impactful if there is more dark colour around the glow. So, darkening the recess with nuln oil or black paint, then doing a much thinner white line might work a little better. I also find brighter colours like Blood Angels Red or Warp Lightning work a little better for this effect, too.
True on the eyes, and something I'd spend the time on if I were painting Sergeants or characters. For the line infantry, though, they can go marching out the door as quickly as possible! ;D
The boxed sets give me the old Second Edition vibe. I like them, but I'm hesitant to go all in. I'll do 4 armies, two loyalist, two heretical. And decide from there.
That's it! I like the warmth it adds without overpowering the cool tone of the armour. It's also great for an irradiated looking blasted hellscape, depending on how you look at it. ;D
'Leather' is such a broad range of colours it's hard to just settle on one. Something like Mournfang Brown or Vallejo's Leather Brown would be nice, rich and darker colours - shade with Nuln Oil, highlight with the base colour again and go for a slightly brighter brown to highlight. Or something like Vallejo Mahogany Brown shaded with Agrax Earthshade looks great with a Vallejo Red Leather highlight. That's much warmer and probably would look better maintained than you're thinking, at a guess, but worth looking at.
Wondering if you would do some luna wolf's also wish you did some Death guard but love your work trying to do the same way just have to talk the wife in to using a makeup brush lol
Short answer, "Eventually." I've done a lot of power armour in a pretty short space of time, so I'm going to catch my breath with some other stuff for a little bit before returning to Astartes.
I couldn't really say. I don't have it to compare. Honestly, I think a cool grey helps pull away some of the green from the final finish, but if you wanted that then you could try Light Green Blue and see how it looks.
I know I'm late to the party, but I want to paint a kill team like that. Which color would you use as an additional highlight layer ? I would like to try that : )
If you need a final bright highlight after following all the other steps, using Administratum Grey as your edge colour will strengthen where you've drybrushed it and make that highlight much sharper.
I'm planning to pick up Lupercal Green in place of Kabalite Green, really, really want to get the tones right, I see people having armies that look as though they're 40K Dark Angels or Salamanders when they're trying to make SoH marines.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio They are the first plastic marines i have ever painted , all my other 40k army is Metal , but yeh they were well good , and am thinking of getting more , and yes they are the first of my 30k army ,
"At some point" is the short answer. I have to admit they're not a Legion that stands out to me personally, but at least with the 30k guys I wouldn't have to bother with those crazy lightning patterns everybody wants!
i didn't really want to advertise. i don't want to earn any money or get more followers for instagram. I just wanted your opinion on my version of the Sons of Horus 😥
Sorry bud! I'd actually missed your first comment. Those guys are great! A bit more green than mine, but fairly close - I'm probably biased to say I like the look. ;D
Years ago I wasn't a fan of the 30k series of models but now it's grown on me. Really love those paint schemes for the original legions.
It's taken a while for me to come around on them, but there's a certain clunky, angry charm to the Mk III armour that's hard to pass up. Especially since they started doing plastic kits for them!
I am glad I am not the only person who dry brushes with layer paints now and again :3

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I prefer the model's color too because it is a more duller green than the others.
Another cracking painting video.cheers Sonic🙂👍
Love it❤ you always make such easy to follow and solid tutorials!
Great tip to shade after gloss varnish! Thanks!
Looks good! I think you did a great job when it comes to time to results.
That's the plan! For an afternoon's work you could knock out ten of these guys for the table, no problem.
Perfect timing, mine are being delivered today and my intention is this very scheme. Cheers.
Champion! Talk about a lucky coincidence.
Yes! This is glorious content.
I sense a little bias here, Warmaster!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Maybe!😎
That looks a nice figure and Brilliantly painted.
Another great vid - lots of good tips and an awesome finished miniature!
Cheers!
Don’t forget to like and comment to appease the almighty algorithm 😁👍🏼
who is this algorithm man???
I've been using sons of horus green & white & kabalite green highlights. Your recipe is quite nice too. Thanks
If GW's would only rerelease Calth and Prospero sets!!!
Thanks for the good vibes of the day :). Edit: very cool method, someone must have stumbled upon it by accident.
Thanks! Been looking for a awesome guide!
Glad I could help!
Stunning as allways. :) Thanks a lot for that Video. :)

Lovely stuff
Hopefully we see some heresy smurf and the other legions down the line.
Looks amazing 😁
Really nice! and easy too!
Yes just a kill team that's how it all starts lol awesome video can't wait for the next one
"just for kill team" that's what my buddy said about his necrons... 1500 points ago
full 30 man units of mk3 gunpigs incoming.
the magic of plastic crack xD
Speed Painting Sons of Horus?
The Holy Inquisition wants to know your location!
Looks great, makes we want to do my own Sons of Horus force. And I reckon you should definitely start up a 30k force!
Aaah, don't encourage me!
The boxed sets give me the old Second Edition vibe.

Another fantastic video! Is the base done with Stirland mud, Ryza rust then Eldar flesh?

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio well now I have a new recipe to try as I have all these colors.
Such a good colour. Any thoughts on an approach for a painting skitarii cloaks in a worn leather look..steampunk/wildwest inspired? Thanks

nailed that green! will we see any more 30k legions?
ScifiWargamers I want alpha legion!
Short answer, "Eventually." I've done a lot of power armour in a pretty short space of time, so I'm going to catch my breath with some other stuff for a little bit before returning to Astartes.
Marine juice? You mean gene seed, correct?
Do you think using Vallejo model colour Light Green Blue would give a better look than Administraum Grey?
I couldn't really say. I don't have it to compare. Honestly, I think a cool grey helps pull away some of the green from the final finish, but if you wanted that then you could try Light Green Blue and see how it looks.
How is Vallejo's black compared to Abaddon Black tone wise? I'd love me a black that covers like a dream.
It's more or less identical. Dries slightly more matt, but otherwise it's the same thing. Especially once it's shaded and varnished!
Have you tried Lupercal green? I just painted up a Son of Horus using it, came out looking pretty fresh
Lupercal Green seems just a little dark for my tastes, though there's no denying it works well!
I know I'm late to the party, but I want to paint a kill team like that. Which color would you use as an additional highlight layer ? I would like to try that : )

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thanks : )
I really love your tutorials. One question in the shade. Do you use the gloss versions of Nuln and Reikland?
Nope! I've never found the difference to be worth owning two pots, especially when I tend to matt varnish my miniatures when I'm finished anyway. 😅
I'm planning to pick up Lupercal Green in place of Kabalite Green, really, really want to get the tones right, I see people having armies that look as though they're 40K Dark Angels or Salamanders when they're trying to make SoH marines.
Thank you , Sonic .
I have just finished a box of mk3 troops, (Space wolves ) , spooky .
They're fun figures, right? I love the Mk III stuff. :D

If you wanted to do transfers, would you apply them before the matt varnish or after and then do another coat of varnish to protect the transfers?
I'd apply them before the matt. You can varnish twice, but you don't ordinarily need to.
The "Age of Darkness" pull you in yet by 2022? I'm now dealing with more gray plastic guilt.
I wish! Haven't got the cash to go all in on a proper 30k force for a while, honestly.
Can you get these specific amour models from anywhere? Great job by the way , love the look
No worries just typed in mark 3 space marines and kaboom haha :)
Beat me to it! ;)
hope you make another video like this for green dark angels armor on firstborn marines.. 😁
ua-cam.com/video/R4HI2omM7WM/v-deo.html Something like this?
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio yup! but with your new methods.. 😁
I have a squad of chaos marines that need a wash... and I have the parts to make Mark's mix.
Still wish you’d do one for 30k night lords :)

I'd love to see an Alpha legion tutorial!
The color almost looks like the reed green German uniforms from WW2
The Vallejo German Uniform green is actually pretty close to Sons of Horus Green. Maybe slightly less saturated, but it really is pretty similar!
