That long red device is so you can bleed the last of the gas out of the torch before you refill it. Everytime you refill that touch you should be emptying out the the butane from the torch completely. If you don't you build up back pressure that won't allow you to fill the tank completely and some cheap lighters can explode

Good review. I just got mine, and guessed that the long tip was to empty out the torch. You don't realluy need to attach a second tip to it to do that. There is one more function this torch has.. Well this torch is a "Dual Flame"torch. So, one mode is the precision jet mode, which you use to do soldering, welding, hobby, jewelry, etc. and you can also adjust the flame to a non-precision candle like flame, by covering the hole in the tube (right where it is attached to the body. If you notice, there is a spring on the nozzle. Before the spring, there is a black ring, that has an opening. Under the ring there is a hold in the nozzle tube, for Oxygen intake, i guess. If you turn the ring so that you could see that hole through the opening, it allows the oxygen to mix with butane, and makes the flame like a candle flame. Good for lighting cigars, candles, scorching food recipies, etc. If you used the jet flame to light candles, it will melt lot of candle and waste it. If you cover that hole, then you get the precision jet flame. In both flame modes, you can adjust the size of the flame by turning the control.
