the Seagull was the first play in the history of the theater dealing With the ordinary people and Their ordinary feelings. There are no Heroes nor Big tradegies. just everyday people With Their High and lows. at the same time it's a play about a search and somtimes calling for a higher meaning. - quite human. like the author that's why it was boohed out at the first performance, but has been triumphant ever since!
The 'ordinary people' in The Seagull are Yakov, 'The Maid', 'The Cook', who have probably half a page of dialogue between them, if that. I love The Seagull, but it's not about ordinary people, it's about the boredom and insecurities of the privileged.
pfft "the seagull was the first play with characters that have nuanced emotional journeys." I was there for everything else but that was a major eyeroll.
@@DarkAngelEU Maybe the first play that isn't about aristocrats' emotional journeys. These people are all well-off but not aristocrats, which was a big deal in 1900.
I’m reading a bio of Chekhov without reading anything by him except the 5 novellas... much towards the end of the book, I ordered the Seagull with Annette Bening... in the dialogue, I could see Chekhov’s life float by in the film ... was weird experience..
Unfortunately our Young Chekhov plays aren't available on our streaming service - however our new National Theatre Live production of The Seagull is coming to movie theaters soon :) ntlive.com
"The first great play of the twentieth century...." Quite a statement, eh? Where has he been? On another planet. Still, when you have to sell a production I suppose you say anything.
Why do we have only bits and pieces of the seagull play WHY I NEED ANSWERS PLEASE 🙏 so bloody conservative with something that is absolutely brilliant but they to shove rubbish down our throats instead 😡.
such a smart cast who respects their character’s experiences and taking every detail they interpret from the writings into consideration
that's an incredible set - ive only read the play before and couldnt imagine how it would be pulled off.
I love Чехов❤

What about Ibsen?
When I saw Seagull in film .. I could tell right off it was revolutionary... it seems so present day but written... 1896. .. I know nothing of plays
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen was the first. Chekhov was just a tad after
Such a generalisation

@@squamish4244 What do you mean? Where?

big oof
Ok, I'm all ears. Which play dealt with ordinary people and the meaning of life?
@@zztopz7090 These people are aristocrats. The Seagull is a meditative reworking of Hamlet.
I was gonna say, these themes are as old as medieval or maybe even pre-Roman times. Modern people just like to think everything is new.

So.... which play is better?

Too many posh pansies in British theatre these days we need to get back to where it was at in the 60s/70s.
You mean everyone just getting naked on stage?
@@senoj.rednaxela Lol. I love that your name is Alex Jones. Tell it like it is.
