Our mother, Alice, a member of the Culhane family, was born in Glyn. Our family now spreads to America and England and we had a memorable reunion in Glyn and stayed at Ballybunion. I remember the story about Glyn Castle. A member of the family brought shame to the family when a young girl became pregnant by him and rather than face the consequences to himself and the name of the family he crossed the Shannon in a small boat with her on board and pushed her overboard. We had a cousin who became headmaster of Glyn school. I love Ireland and especially Glyn as well as Limerick. Maybe you want to add this little story to your folder about Glyn
Many of us in the USA just heard about this beautiful castle and the family who have owned it for so many centuries. It seems so outrageous that the family home cannot pass to his daughters. How outdated is such a law? Not to mention its for sure one hell of sexist law. Isn't there anything that can be done for these girls. Boy I was under the belief that Ireland was much more up to date with the times. Its wonderful to save your history and preserve your past. From what Ive learned the castle and all of the fantastic heirlooms, and art would be better preserved by the people who loved this man. Its part of their history and childhood memories. This is so utterly absurd. I hope the women will find a good 😊 and very smart solicitor to help fight their cause. Many of us here with ties to Ireland and all of the U.K. will be watching how this plays out in the future. We are sure praying whoever is in charge of such matters will see that this beautiful place stays in the hands (rightfully) of the descendants and family. It just should not matter that they are female. Im gobsmacked 😶 really. This law should be updated promptly, so this travesty and injustice doesn't happen to any other family. I do not have a dog in this fight. As a woman I'm just appalled 😳 at the continuation of men holding women under their THUMBS for no good reason but for brute power. I'm very sorry the father passed away. He seemed like a very caring man with a great love and appreciation of his ancestral home. It certainly looked like it has been well cared for by him and all previous owners of the castle. The antiquities were breathtakingly beautiful. I can't even imagine what it would be like to open your eyes everyday and be surrounded by such splendid pieces of art. How peaceful it would be to be able to walk in such glorious, lush gardens. I wish the girls well and do hope something can be done to save their childhood home.
