I would take a blank cheap notebook, and a few pens, also phone and charger. Take lots of pictures! Write the minimum amount of notes about your travels, just enough to allow you to expand on them arriving home. The pictures you take will help, too. You can even record notes on your phone.

This is what I do. Saves me from the worry of losing my permanent records, plus I can just scribble whatever needs to be remembered. I use a 9.5x6 spiral notebook because it's sizeable enough not to get lost in the shuffle, but small enough to fit easily in my backpack. Transferring notes where they will live forever is part of my travel recovery protocol.

I have gotten a Scribbles that Matter pouch for Christmas and I love it so much! It holds my multi year journal currently, as well as a bunch of supplies. Should I be traveling I'd probably take that pouch filled with whatever journal and supplies I want to take with me 😊

I had bough a little "wallet" that had three little notebooks in it: one with lines, one with blank paper, and one with a dot grid, all held in there with elastic bands. I took the dot grid one out so it's its own little book, and that's going to be my travel journal. I'm keeping my main journal home, and I put in whatever I need to keep track of my dailies and habits - it's basically a small, condensed version of my regular journal, so I can tabs while I'm away, and then when I get home, I can just fill in my regular journal with what I did while I was away :)

This is so timely as I am going to Italy in two weeks and just asked myself question #1: how much time will have to journal. I am going to take my TN to capture highlights from the day. Lots of pics and combine epherma and pics along with highlights when I come home.

    My essentials:
    15cm ruler,
    pencil,
    roller tip-ex,
black 0.5mm gel pen (+1 spare),
    one mildliner/brush pen for emphasis.
My travel journal is done on the back of postcards - one-two postcards for each day of the trip. I lay out small boxes for the later sticking-on of any photos I took that day, tip-ex out any pre-written boxes on the back and write my daily log in the resulting free space - when I get home and print my photos, I'll stick them into the boxes I set aside. When I get home, I can bind those postcards as tip-ins into my planner - means I have excellent professional quality photos of where I've been, along with the personal photos and a log written at the time, without having to bring my whole planner. The whole kit can also fit in my day-pack with minimal weight so no chance of ever losing it.

I use Happy Planner for my regular planner, so I can pull the month(s) I’ll be gone and write in the weeklies what we did. I use my phone as my camera. When I get home I print pictures on my Sprocket and use my pens/stickers/washi to put in my travel journal.

I love to journal and that does not change when I travel. I love my traveler’s notebook from The Traveler’s Company in Japan. Inside my traveler’s notebook I have inserts for journaling that have Tomoe River paper (I bought it at Baum-Kuchen), I have an insert that is sticker release paper to bring along all my stickers for decoration for the trip and then a blank lightweight insert for extra space if needed. I also being washi cards with my favorite washis for the trip also tucked into my traveler’s notebook. I bought a canvas wallet from Baum-Kuchen that also lives in my notebook that has slots for credit cards or washi cards. I find that when we sit down for dinner and there is a wait I pull out my journal and write. Or if we are on public transit I write. Basically any time there is a free moment I am writing, ALL the time!!! Oh! And I forgot the most important item that I bring on any trip large or small…my fountain pens. Actually they go everywhere with me. I have fallen in love with writing with fountain pens. It is a whole different experience than writing with a gel pen or a ballpoint pen. I don’t have many because I don’t want many but I love the ones I have!❤
Thank you for such a great video. I really enjoyed your tips!
p.s. you can bring a small pair of scissors on the plane for embroidery or journaling. They are allowed.

I get a bit lateral. I take a little, postcard sized photo album - the type that has a plastic sleeve for each photo - with paper cut to fit. Each day I make some notes about the day on a page and slide it and any paper mementos (tickets, parts of flyers etc) into one of the photo sleeves. I also take a roll of washi so I can close up the sleeve or stick the ephemera down, if I need to do that.
When I get home I add all the bits to my journal, scrapbooking style.

Great idea. I tried to bring a travel journal with the intention of “collaging” and writing what I did during the day and make it pretty at the same time…. Disaster! So next trip I will do something like you described. Less pressure while on the trip and doing the nice looking journal when you are back home gives you the chance to reminisce 😊

I make a point to journal while I travel. My last trip to Iowa I took my HP Sproket to print pictures and journal every day. I've found that a standard Traveler's Notebook is a great travel journal for me. I take very few pens, but washi tape cards, journaling cards, stickers and maybe a small set of travel stamps with a mini ink pad. When I went to Japan, I had a Sakuralala set of Japan themed stamps.

When I travel I try to plan ahead easy spreads that I know I will be able to complete. Spaces where I could write down things, keep in check some habits (less than usual)... Because I never know how much or how little I'm gonna update the journal, I use pencil to write most of the things, or I use notes to not forget. When I have time/energy I complete the spreads with that or make it cleaner with pen.
Two things that ALWAYS have to appear in my travel journal are a list with everything I bring with me so I don't forget anything important (at home or at vacation site), and what I've eaten. I love to try new food and that way I can remember what I've tried 😋

    Thanks for sharing, Jess.
When I travel for work, I take a simple note book in case I have time to take a few days of vacation combined to my trip which is... unfortunately rare.
When traveling for vacation, I always use a good old traveler's notebook with different inserts. I use a first insert in dotted kraft paper with a kind of checklist that I can utilize for each of my trips.
A second dotted blank insert to write down my thoughts while actually traveling each day as I love to remember each day in terms of "raw reflection and thoughts.
And a third plain white insert to be able to draw on one page (that way I can use my drawings). I take 2 black pens (in case I would lose one) and a pencil and eraser and that's all. I collect tickets, maps etc. in a pencil case.
When I am back home, I rearrange all that in a travel size notebook usually from Notebook therapy or My Mellow Days (this one provides some watercolor paper)
This one notebook is dedicated to only one trip and gets very chunky when I am done!
It took me several times to set up this system but I find it the one that corresponds the best to me: writing down everyday without thinking of how it looks, drawing when I feel like it, capturing my raw feelings and having the pleasure to "relive" my trip when putting everything together along with what I collected and printed photos from my phone in a small format.
I then buy two new inserts and am ready for the next trip !!

I don't bother to bring a physical travel journal. Instead, I build a whole Canva project with my information about the trip as well as some planned pages. Specifically, I will create a page for each day we will be gone, notes on what we plan to do that day, and any questions I think I want to ask people at dinner as a recap for the day. When I get home, I add pictures, fancify the pages with schnazy font, and gather pictures from others. Once I'm satisfied, I export the Canva project to send copies to digital photo frames around the family and print pictures for my travel journal. It's not quite the same as what you were talking about, but it helps me feel organized for memory keeping and planning without having too much structure I can't be spontaneous. And if I need another page for a particularly awesome event, it's easy to add electronically. This has worked out well for sharing photos with family members who are less interested in keeping all photos regardless of how blurry they are. I really need to clean my photo storage area...

I have a dedicated travel journal with all my vacation. If I have any trackers I would like to keep up with while away, I will draw them in there for that time period before I go, fill it out while away and then fill it out in my everyday journal when I get home.
When I had a 5 year 'one question a day' journal I did the same for that. It was a bit tiresome to write things multiple times, but so nice to not have 2 journals with me, and to be able to see the answers being affected by the different surroundings.

Now that you’re coming to more than one Go Wild my llama journal must come with me so you can sign it for this year :) that goes in the carry on and will only leave my hands when it’s in yours. I have a notebook I’m going to write everything in and then when I come home I can work on the journal itself from that.

It's funny how my journal is already travel friendly, it's an A5 in a very light sleeve I sew. I have 10 colored point 88 stabilo, a foutain pen, 2 staedtler fineliner (0.05 and 0.8) and a staedler lumocolor non permanent (erasable with water on the double pages I have laminated to hold quick thoughts until I can write it properly elsewhere).
I also have a standing pencil case that I would or would not take depending how much journalling and sketching I will have time to do and if I need to travel lightly or not. This case contains a mechanical pencil, my watercolor pencils, a brush, a tissue paper and an exacto knives.

re photos, taking a mini printer seems like a lot of hassle. I just have a spare picture the size I print off in the back envelope, so whenever I want to stick in a pic I just draw around it in pencil where I want it to go and do a tiny quick sketch to remind myself which image I want there, then stick it in when I get home

I TOTALLY did the overestimate how much I'd journal on my last trip and half the spreads I'd set-up were just filled with "obviously I died", "obvs dead" etc
I have this awful thing I NEED to write every little thing in a diff colour so my pencil case is filled with most of my writing pens and highlighters, and a few Tombows. It also sucked bc one of my pens burst, not that I was worried about mess (my case is black and made of REALLY THICK material but I also made sure it was away from important things in case anything burst) but I was like OMG HOW WILL I LIVE WITHOUT THAT COLOUR PEN (spoiler: the day after I landed, I sought out a stationary shop JUST FOR THAT REASON)
