'Superstar' was written by Delaney Bramlett and Leon Russell. Bonnie got credit so Delaney could avoid losing royalties due to a previous recording contract. As Bobby Whitlock notes in one of his series of YT videos (linked here), Bonnie was made to leave the room so Delaney and Leon could write the tune. Ideally it was to go to Bonnie but the Carpenters recorded it first. D&B record it on their 'Together' album. Had Bonnie done it, yes, she would almost certainly have become a major name. ua-cam.com/video/tkm4CQmVtI8/v-deo.html
@@wayneblanchard97 Witlock is provably wrong saying Carpenters did it 1st (they were the 5th recorded version), which he attributes partly to their both being with Electra Asylum records. It was originally released as a single, Dec. 1969, by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, on their earlier label, Atco. The label shows Delaney produced it, but writing credit is to B.Bramlett & L.Russell. Delaney later gained writing credit (various reason as to why have been given). When D&B did their 1972 album, they used their original, 1969 version on it, which is why some mistakenly list theirs as a 1972 version. Witlock also doesn’t seem to know the song had been worked on, before the single event he is recalling (where he thinks Leon & Delaney just whipped it out). Rita said, she’d been working on it for a while, when Leon took her work & presented it as his own (which Bonnie didn’t know, till Rita’s book). When Bonnie asked Rita why she didn’t say something earlier, Rita told her because she was afraid Delaney would beat Bonnie (if he had to share credit further).
@@wnsafford1854 Thank you for this enlightening response. It is difficult to determine the reality when those who were there and involved have conflicting stories. And yes, Delaney tunes would be credited to Bonnie as a means of getting around a bad contract he was still locked in to. Whitlock has been wrong or questionable on a couple things thus far, so no surprise if 'Superstar' is another. Still, who knew that 50 years later we'd be debating such trivia? I am surprised to read from you that 'Superstar (Groupie)' on the 'Together' album is from a 1969 session. Even at the time I felt is was a rather stark sounding track. Mind, the album, as much as I like it (must haul it out again) was, as memory serves me, inconsistent and didn't have the sonic 'oomph' of 'To Bonnie From Delaney'. Thank you again for your response. I learned something. Cheers.
@@wayneblanchard97 Actually Bobby was incorrect on the chronological sequence. Delaney and Bonnie had recorded it and released it as the flip side of the "Coming Home" single in Dec 1969. It was then done by Rita Coolidge on the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" album released in Aug 1970. Bette Midler sang it on the Tonight Show in Feb 1971 and Richard Carpenter saw it and it appeared on the Carpenters album in May 1971. The Carpenters single was released in Aug 1971. The original version appeared on the "D&B Together" album in 1972, which was after the Carpenters version but again, it had already appeared as the flip side of a single back in 1969. Bonnie did record it on a solo album in 2002. Bobby probably forgot about the flip side recording of the song or maybe didn't know about it if Leon Russell had played the keyboards.
What an absolutely charming couple, especially Bonnie. She isn't going to the rocking chair anytime soon. 75 going on 20. This video really cheered me up.
Absolutely adore Bonnie, and that magnificent voice and personality. Legendary 'sound'. P.S. And she is DEAD ON CORRECT at the 9:20 mark with her opinion of 'The Industry'.
They're telling the truth about Nashville these days. All of these new singers do pretty much have the same sound or same story most of the time. That's why we can't tell them apart anymore. Nashville you better start listening to these people. They know what they're talking about. That's why Stars like Waylon Jennings was called the outlaws. 🤔😉😁❤
She just makes me smile, what a great personality.
Bonnie is a legend. Music they created back in the 60's and 70's is bad ass.
I have all her records. On time my favorite
God i love Bonnie with my entire soul.
The world needs more Bonnie!
She should have been a Superstar, just like the song she wrote! One of the greatest female singers of all time!!!

@@wayneblanchard97 All this time I thought it was Bonnie. I'm disappointed to say the least, cuz I know what a fine songwriter she is.

Seriously? I didn’t think she was so close to 50 when she did Roseanne.
I love this woman and all that she does!

I saw her with Willie Nelson some years ago. She could wail. Most of the people at the concert didn't know who she was.
