    This is the most well put together tutorial/demo I have ever seen. The understanding you have of your craft shows in your teaching style. You have done what many struggle to do when teaching, removing the intimidation of the process.
    Honestly, this should be your most viewed video, I have watched this at least 7 times and you have shown that I and others can do it.

    Over 30 years producing, writing and playing- and this was a great video. The fundamentals of current music dropped here were nice and easily digestible. Clearly, being more creative will be more interesting, but starting here is a great place to build from.

    Gotta be honest after you mentioned "helping thousands of students" I figured this was going to be a bunch of clickbait BS but was shocked to find that you then gave us ACTUAL PRACTICAL TANGIBLE tips on making music! Thank you for surprising me!
    (Two year later edit:) After watching this video and posting this comment, I started on my first song, hardly can believe it's already been so long but I spent a year on it before publishing it. Despite knowing that the chances of it ever reaching a significant audience were miniscule, I absolutely don't regret the learning experience of creating a song by ear, and trying to make it sound as realistic as possible. It's inspired by the 70's and 80's progressive epics that molded my tastes, bands like Pink Floyd and Rush. If anyone wants to hear it, it starts a bit slow but grows in intensity and complexity until the end: ua-cam.com/video/7S7SuOwiBhI/v-deo.html

    I'm a longtime subscriber and this video still blew my mind. I knew of chord counting as a technique, but I never really have dived into it and definitely have no music theory. I would just pick notes and keep them close to each other until I found something that worked. But this is way faster, and the fact that you can transpose them to any key is what really excites me! Lack of music theory has been kinda killing the fun I feel when producing music, but now it's back full swing and I can't wait to start making music again! Thanks bro!
    Also I really need to jump on the Splice train lol. Soooo convenient.

    I have had 13 years of drum/percussion experience, been on tours with aspiring artists I went to highschool with from a small town in Canada, worked with dozens of B-listed old rock n roll Canadian bands well known still to this day, I’m a karaoke guy at a local bar, a tv news reporter for a local news station, wedding and shag dj on the weekends, with lots of other side projects on the go with my parents horse farm as well as other projects. I have so many feelings and ideas I’ve learned on the way, with good guidance on what to do and what not to do in terms of presenting myself and being kind to everyone I talk to. I wanted to put these words out here to tell myself to push through and write my own songs to see if anyone can relate. I haven’t written anything yet but today Saturday May 18th at 11:45 pm is the day that I’m going to finally persue my own vulnerabilities so that others may be able to relate to what I’m feeling. This comment is for myself, I’m going to start working on my own project instead of being behind the scenes of other arrogant artists who only want to make it into Hollywood (that actually is a real thing that makes sense to me).

    Music theory wasn't meant to be a compositional tool. At it's core it's a form of analysis.
    Composition is a more intuitive process, and knowing theory won't give you intuition.
    That said, oh boy does knowing theory keep you from having to reinvent the wheel! Just sayin...

    • @DERIVATIVES-mh6ej
      @DERIVATIVES-mh6ej 4 роки тому +15

      Yeah, I didn't really know much music theory when I first started making music, things just came naturally. But the stuff that came naturally wasn't enough for me, which is where learning music theory came in handy. I wanted to know how to switch scales, change/enhance feelings, and understand chords. Music theory isn't required but boy does it make composition not only easier, but funner too.
