I think he was used perfectly. He's the epitome of Generation of Miracles' ideology of blind strength and victory. His shady persona is mentioned during the entire anime, the glimpses of his schemes are shown since the start of season 2. Aomine might be the most important antagonist for Kuroko, as their rivalry was personal, but it's Akashi who challenges Kuroko's ideal of basketball and is ultimately the personification of what Kuroko wants to defeat. In a way, this entire anime is a battle between Kuroko and Akashi. That's why Akashi shows up so late and is the main antagonist.

I don't think it was possible, the generation of miracles was not connected enough to each other to be able to enter the Direct Drive Zone in that game, they are not in sync like Kuroko, Kagami and the others from Team Seirin were.
there was always a joke that if kuroko has the zone he will have a permanent invisible effect and all his balls will just dissapear. Besides that, his passing ability will increase exponentially and instead of passing the ball to his teammates, he will just pass it to the enemy's goal instead. He can essentially use aomine off form shot along with midorima's insane range since his hurricane pass, and ignite pass both have insane range.
