Can You Use Regular Gasoline in a Premium Car?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 17 сер 2024
  • I used to own a car that requires premium gasoline. Then I started putting in regular gasoline in. For six years. My engine didn't explode and everything was fine. Of course, that's anecdotal but the science behind it also supports the idea that your engine really wont explode if you do so.
    EDIT: After reviewing all the comments, I have to add that if you do try to use a lower octane fuel, you may need to double check there is no 'knocking' in the engine not just audibly but with an ODBII reader. The reader will record every single instance of a knock or 'backfire'. While using lower octane once to test it out is unlikely to cause engine damage, using it continuously with the engine knocking could damage the engine. Hence, if you do this, you really need to know what you are doing.
    Also, it probably doesn't work so well with engines with turbos. Turbo engines work with increase pressure and so a lower octane will cause it to knock. Depending on the engine, it may or may not be able to compensate.

      The first time, people could, just add 1/4 of regular gas when the tank is with 1/8. If the car run perfect can add additional 1/4 of gas. If something go wrong you can mix a 1/2 with a premium gas. But I use in all my new cars and never had a issue (Mustang, Fusion, Miata, etc).

    My uncle runs the entire repair shop at Mercedes. He says they see so many come through with damaged motors because owners do not use 91. First sign of damage will be a very low knocking sound. Takes years. But will destroy your car. 91 is the minimum. Where 93 is available, it’s suggested.

    Back in the day, I had a car that was intended for lower octane fuel, but I fully advanced the ignition so that it would run on premium. Although the fuel cost was higher, it was offset by the improved efficiency of the motor. This was a fuel injected vehicle, but it used an OBD-1 system that wasn't equipped with a knock sensor.

  • @ascendantP

    This video needs a disclaimer to, "Don't sue me bro". You should follow the recommendation of your owners manual, some manufactures say its fine not to use the recommended premium fuel octane, some do not and even warns that this can void any warranty claims if this is discovered to be the case if you are having engine troubles. Porsche engines are built like a tank and it rarely has timing/knock issues from using a lesser octane fuel. However, Mercedes, BMW, and Audi engines are more sensitive and can cause issues if you are using less octane fuel for years

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I added some disclaimer warnings. Before doing this, you may want to check the OBDII logs to see if the engine even knocked once after putting in the lower octane fuel.

    Back in the 80's it was common to hear knocking at 87, so I used 93 octane but it was only $.20 a gallon more back then. Today the quality at 87 is better because the government made them clean up the gas with detergent I was told in about 2011. I bought a used 99 Lexus that required premium in 2018. I tried 93 and 87 because of the roughly $.60 difference in Illinois today and I notice no knocking and the gas mileage was identical. I have put 60,000 miles on it in 4 years and its still running well at 271,000 miles on 87. Sometimes I put a booster in the tank but I also don't try to dog it while driving as well. Just my experience.

    My car gets 29mpg when I use Premium and 26mpg when I use Regular. Regular gas is cheaper but I needed to fill up more often so it was a wash. I also had increased performance with Premium so I decided to stick with Premium because in the end it costs the same and I don't have to fill up as often.

    • @BeatTheBush

      When I try to do the mpg calculation, I find that it varies by a few mpg even without changing the octane rating. So you really have to be super careful in this measurement. For example, you have to make sure the driving style and amount of freeway/streets is roughly equivalent. Also, how are you measure the amount of gas you used? Use it up, then fill it to the top, and that is what you used? One pump may stop earlier than another so you should also use the same exact pump at the same gas station with the seal of the pump in the exact same way.

    • @mindibear
      @mindibear 2 роки тому +4

      @@BeatTheBush True. I drove my car the same route to work every day, same freeway, same traffic conditions, same time of day. I didn’t drive it on the weekends so I knew I went the exact same miles for the experiment. Yes, fill up the tank, drive and then fill again and use the number of gallons pumped to calculate mileage. I used the same gas station but maybe not the same pump. I’m sure there were some variables I didn’t account for but the experiment was convincing enough for me to stick with Premium.

    Would only do this if you have a naturally aspirated vehicle with no turbo.
    The higher the octane, the more resistant the gas mixture is to pre-ignition, especially when the turbo is forcing air (and hot air at that) into the combustion chambers. Modern engine management computers can retard timing to limit (but not necessarily stop all) pre-ignition, which is harmful to your engine especially at full boost and high RPMs, but doing so will cause a rise in exhaust gas temperatures which will cause the turbo to heat up more, and since the turbo is oil cooled, the oil temperatures will go up locally, and if the engine is shut off suddenly, the turbo can "cook" the oil leading to a build up of junk in the lines, causing a oil starvation and turbo death.
    The remedy is to use the recommended octane rating for your car, at least if you have a Turbo and it recommends premium. Not to mention the reduction in mileage with the turbo will be especially noticeable with regular gas.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 роки тому

    This is terrible advice BeatTheBush. Not to be rude - but you need to do your research or avoid getting into lanes that you're not qualified to give advice in. You are going to end up causing someone to destroy their engine. There is a reason manufacturers recommend a certain fuel type - it depends on the internal combustion of the engine. You can't just ignore it and put what you want into the vehicle. You have to know about your fuel injectors as well. Risk your entire engine to save a few dollars on gas - not financially wise.

Rule of thumb is to do whatever the manufacturer says is ok as in recent years some engines are under higher compression so they require 93 and manufacturers state 91 is ok BUT nothing lower. Your statement is current 20 years ago when they pushed manufacturers to require all new cars sold run on 87 but they quickly backed down due to all the push back so if the manufacturer says 91/93 is required then you must run it or you could void your warranty and or damage the engine. Do what manufacturers require only. Never do what someone may say is ok.

    Most cars are meant to run on 87 if you're car requires 91 there will be a sticker on the gas cap. Putting 87 in a 91 car wont cause immediate damage although over time there could be problems and the cars performance will be slightly worse. Often times 91 gas is actually a mixture of 87 and 91 because the gas station orders too much 87 and the manager says throw the extra in the premium tank. If you want to take good care of you're engine using top tier gas is better than using premium.

    Every car sold in America needs to work with 87 octane gasoline by law. I have a 2021 BMW, 2020 Acura, had 2018 BMW, a bunch of turbo GTIs / GLIs. All work fine with regular due to modern electronics (knock sensors retarding timing). They do produce about 10% less power and maybe slightly more turbo lag on regular (very hard to notice). The most change in MPG is maybe 1 to 2 MPG, if any - but it’s hard to tell. Depends on the conditions. Winter driving seemingly no change. Hot summer, you might have dump more fuel in for cylinder cooling and less dense air. Turbo charged engines benefit from the use of higher octane (counterintuitively the octane rating just means it’s resistance to detonation) for mainly power. Why is this important? Turbo charged engines are high compression. The more they can compress the fuel the better the explosion is and the more power they can make off of each piston stroke. 93 octane fuel is more expensive due to a lesser extent the cost of the extra additive package (including the octane booster - all they do is take regular gasoline, we do not refine 93 octane in the USA and add additives) and to a major extent MARKETING. In Europe, their “regular” gas is higher octane to begin with. Last, Ford Motor Company and few other car companies started lobbying oil companies and the DOT to make “premium” higher octane fuel the only fuel in the USA. They argued that modern high compression engines all benefit from it from a power to engine size standpoint, and therefore you could squeeze out more power from a smaller displacement engine.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 роки тому

      Didn't know about this law. Do you know where I can find it?
      Let me paraphrase the last part from my understanding:
      While energy density in the fuel is roughly the same, higher compression means smaller engine size. The smaller the size, the less the engine weighs and likely the less inertia in the moving parts. So higher octane is indeed slightly more efficient.

    i might be late but honestly you shouldn't be discussing a topic and giving people car advice on something you are not properly educated on. although you are correct about knock sensors, keep in mind it can still knock which will damage your engine over time, also can lead to carbon buildup which will require you to rebuild your engine. i am talking about cars with knock sensors. also there is a difference between cars which require premium fuel and which cars recommend premium fuel. i am talking about the cars that require premium fuel
    the most important point however, is gas mileage. as a a lot of people in this comment section are also reporting, it hurts your gas mileage a lot. the compression ratio of a car is designed with maximum efficiency in mind. you do not seem to have any understanding of what a compression ratio is so i suggest you research that first. when your car detects knock and retards the ignition timing to prevent preignition it is also hurting your gas mileage in addition to also losing horsepower. because of the MPG loss, you will actually spend MORE on gas instead of less. it will cost you less if you just run the correct fuel that costs slightly more. if your car does not require premium, it will not make a difference. your porsche is so old it doesnt give you an MPG reading so you never realized this. if you dont want to buy premium gas, dont buy a car that requires it, sounds simple to me....
    my 2006 Civic Si has a knock sensor, and if i put 87 octane it will still knock even with the changed ignition timing (checked with OBD tool), it IS bad for your engine, please do not give misinformation.
    and to be honest, if you cant afford the slightly more expensive premium fuel, you shouldnt be driving that porsche, i feel bad for the next owner of that car.
    i understand you want to give advice to your viewers but your "advice" is potentially harmful and more costly than just running the right fuel. You can do this yourself.
    engineering explained explains this topic properly, he is a mechanical engineer. since you dont want to listen to mechanics

    If it is rated for premium, put in premium. You can easily damage your engine if you put a lower grade fuel in. Not worth the risk at all. Your engine can protect itself somewhat by altering ignition timing but this is not an indication that it can run on whatever fuel you feel like. I know gas is expensive but if you are hurting so bad you need to put regular in your premium fuelled engine, you cannot afford your vehicle. Period.
