- Olivier Award winner Amber Riley, who won the award for Best Actress in a musical, took the stage to perform her big Dreamgirls number at the Olivier Awards in London last Saturday night. As it is known, Amber stars as Effie White, the lead singer of a fame-hungry trio from Chicago who finds herself edged out by their smooth-talking manager Curtis (and the guy she loves) just as the group, the Dreamettes, are hitting the big-time. Amber has received unanimous praise from both audience and critics alike.

She got lots of solos but very few that truly showed her talent like this does. Most were just wishy washy ballads that made her voice sound very high and whiny. She sounds absolutely incredible here.

This woman knows how to use her voice, she is a prime example of a vocalist who treats her voice as an instrument. She truly blended both Jennifer Holidae and Hudsons version perfectly to make Amber's version!
I thought BJ Thomas was brilliant at it too, just he never got the international fame I think he deserved.

No one can top Jennifer Hudson's performance in the movie version of this show... NO ONE... and YES I'm very aware of the original Jennifer Holiday she was unrealistically dramatic for me even for Broadway.
That was a recording this is the best LIVE performance we aren't talking about Studio versions. Amber has to sing this Night in and Night out with barely any breaks. Jennifer had to sing this one time i mean she's sung but she sings it rarely she sings it night in and out.
Allyson Messina there is nothing like seeing this live. Trust me. I saw it in London a few weeks ago. Seeing a girl just haul ass and go in on a song and hit everything flawlessly the first time and act a character as well, it's breathtaking. JHud had the beauty of a second take (and auto tune). But to just see it happen in front of you is the most amazing thing
amber riley is a far better vocalist than jennifer hudson. amber actually supports her singing, jennifer's all strain lol

Of course. Amber isn't Jennifer nor is she trying to be her or sound like her. What makes a truly special musical artist is to take a song and make it your own but still respecting the source of the original. Amber did that flawlessly.
The clarity of her vowels, sometimes mid-word, while maintaining such a resonant and huuuuge sound is so amazing and nearly alone in ability. So wonderful.
I was blessed to see Ms Riley in Dreamgirls at The Savoy Theatre in London. Her version of this was even more amazing when I realised that she was belting this out 8 shows a week and she had another half of the show to complete after this song. She is truly spectacular!
I love how she finds so many moments in the beginning to be soft and vulnerable. This song is so well-known as "THE Diva's Number", and too many singers go to 11 and stay there the whole time and while it might be vocally impressive, it's exhausting. Amber knows the *journey* of the lyrics and is absolutely mesmerizing the entire time. It goes from a plea to a demand. Brava.

the way she sounds exactly the same (if not better) live as she does on recording is beyond impressive. her consistency and talent is breathtaking. she deserves so much more recognition.
First half was soft and felt like it wasn't convincing enough but when you get to the second half, this is where the real Amber comes out raw. Very very very nice delivery and I love her notes that she adds on her own and not just replicating the original.Big props to her.
This is without doubt the best live vocal performance I have ever seen in my life! Such emotion, such vocal control, a true master of her craft. As others have mentioned, she was criminally underused in Glee. Amber is right up there with the very, very best in her industry; we need to see a lot more of her!

I have never heard a better performance in my life.
The EXPRESSION in this was so real and so precise, despite being out of context in an award show setting. The notes and runs weren't just grandstanding for applause (as it so often is with this song). Instead every word was sung with it's precise emotional meaning, and for a few minutes I believed I was watching this woman go through the stages of grief, unable to accept a separation - even though you obviously wouldn't be singing in real life, it was expressed so truthfully I was just transported to a dimension where singing made sense! That's real talent and skill.
