This guitar was haunted by Bad Luck for the original seller. I recorded this episode a few weeks ago and just now got around to editing it so this guitar is long sold by now.
    0:23 - The Story Part 1
    2:12 - Part 2 (Reseller's Story)
3:08 - The "Lucy" Les Paul
    3:50 - Part 2 (continued)
    5:38 - Part 3 (Backstabbed)
    6:45 - I Win the Auction!
    9:06 - A TWIST!
    10:13 - Resolution with Seller
    12:00 - Clean Demo
    13:25 - Dirty Demo
    15:06 - Condition
    19:56 - Blacklight Test
    20:47 - Case Review
I ended up cutting a good portion of this video out that discusses the pros / cons of a twisted neck since that was 10 minutes that was not needed haha. In the end, a twisted neck will cause fretbuzz (some worse than others.) This doesn't mean the guitar is not usable...you just have to try them before you buy them and get a steep discount from regular retail prices if it plays ok. I wouldn't have kept/sold this guitar if it was a terrible guitar. It has a very nice and evil look to it and plays decently. The new owner is happy with it

Guitar sounds great, man. I'd take the haunting as part of its character. Maybe a tinge microphonic, but if that neck twist isn't killing it for you then, let it be. Lovely instrument, and not bad for a Standard.

Trogly, Just a tip, if you get a maxed truss rod again, i just put another small washer, or another moon washer in between the nut and standard washer. Maybe not the best fix, but it'll gain the neck more time. Sometimes that just comes from the moon washer compressing the soft fibers of the wood underneath it. I've had a couple 70s necks like that. Worked fine. Fixed the problem. If the truss rod is broken it'll just turn free.

  • @DerredmaxTRIAX
    @DerredmaxTRIAX 2 роки тому +1

A twist is fixable. But it involves stripping the finish off the neck applying steam to the bare wood and forcing just enough opposite twist into a well clamped guitar. Then just wait until the wood is dry. Its a laborious task, but it does work. You could take it one step farther and steam off the fret board and replace the truss rod as well....

That's a real shame about the neck 'cos it sounds great to me. The T-tops are really articulate & clear sounding, plus the guitar looks totally cool. I missed out on a '73 LP Standard a couple of weeks ago. It had been factory routed for a third pick-up & unfortunately it had had a neck repair (a very good one though, several yrs earlier) but it still had the original T-tops & everything else (the seller had put a 490R in the middle), plus a really gorgeous 3-piece maple top in original sunburst finish. It sold for just £1300 on eBay (around $1700 US) but I got in a rather heated ahem....'debate' with my better half over my buying 'yet another' guitar & lost track of the time lol.

Yes the guitar looks cool and still plays so it should be fixed. I would get it just not spend insane money. Don't get me wrong, there is a market for the "distressed" look but if I am paying over $500 I am getting a clean looking just rolled off the factory floor looking guitar! Only a fool would pay over a few hundred for a guitar that is that old that needs over $2000 worth of work done to it in order to make it correct again. Seriously, you all need your heads checked if you fork out that kind of money for ANY guitar in the first place unless it has all the stuff done to it like Floyd Rose, hot pickups, sustainer, floating bridge lock and Tone Vice etc.

I don’t get why it’s such a problem? I understand that it was (accidentally) falsely advertised and he didn’t get what he paid for it - and the neck issue. But... it’s such a beautiful piece. The dark, crimson/blood nebula top, the gold hardware and black plastics look SOOOO good altogether, and it sounds like a classic Les Paul, with the special sound that humbuckers had in the 70’s. Point being, the guitar in its current state is gorgeous and sounds great, and you didn’t even pay the price for a current Gibson. I would kill to have it, so long as I could fix the neck twist.

They are my go to Les Paul models with all their features, tone , and playability and their asthetics. Electronics/Hardware can always be switched out. I've watched that Rick Derringer video a 100 times only good vid of Rock n roll hoochie.. I've learned what to look for when I buy and flip guitars. I've been burnt once and a damn 20yo. Other than that 20-25 guitars I've bought and flipped. My two Pauls are mine I bought at same music store in 70s. Store has been gone 30 years. I even have the invoices where I bought each. Back then little case candy so I saved little Gibson manual and tags hug on the with pipe cleaners. Thanks for the vids. Yea I plan to be buried with mine but I plan on that being 25-30 more years. I'll leave instructions they can dig them up once they are 100 years old. 46 years now and I live say 30 more they'll stay with me 20 years In the grave. Pour tons of lemon oil on the fingerboard and let it sit for a week with no tension on the neck. (after 24--48 hours check to see absorption. Pour on more oil where needed. massage it in with superfine stell wool and adjust truss rod after 1 week....) In a week you might see it okay.

Such a cool guitar though still. I'd stick some "bridge cable" strings on the low side of the neck, and let it sit a while to see what happens. If I could get some of the twist out, then I'd have my tech: do a fret job (whatever he deemed appropriate), change all the gold back to chrome, put on my favorite locking tuners, fit it with a custom brass nut, and set it up for me to play on the road, and (hopefully) the studio. You know... in a perfect world and all.

Did I miss how much this guitar weighs?
Just curious as this Les Paul was made before weight relief efforts by Gibson.

True some guitars have a strange feel. The strings actually detect music in the air and attract moods and spirits.

What I would have done-after that lead-up about a haunted guitar-would have been to position a ghostly mask behind the camera so that occasionally you would have seen its reflection in the guitar top.

If it were ever re-fretted, that could cause it. The barbs on the fret wire have to be milled to match the fret slot. Stew Mac has an excellent video on YT of this.

Knowing all the issues that it has I still think it has an awesome but yet unique sound for a Les Paul it doesn't quite sound like any other Les Paul I've heard

So delighted to see someone who really understand guitars, cos some of customers are pain in back, i explain it, i m building guitars almost 20 years...as well i m repairing guitars, i had opportunity to do jobs on guitars from 60's , 70's too, oh what a beauties..but if someone came to me and says oh can u do tremolo at ma les paul? and i found out that les paul was around 1969? i was totally furious...i told him i rather to pay for it and give u free les paul with tremolo as i had em too...but i will do not do any kind of job on guitars like that..if would be new guitar? i would do it, but? old guitars have not just money value, but there is history, u can feel the soul from it..so i m happy that guitar got restored in some point..if i would be you? i would keep it for while and enjoy it ..sounds great...

I have a 1977 les paul custom 3 pickups original. Looks exactly like this guitar. Binding on front and back of guitar. what I don't like about the guitar is it ways what feels like 20 pounds. Why is it so heavy? It feels like its filled with lead. What kind of wood is that heavy? It weighs double of any of my other guitars. Does that detract from its value?

  • @britishboxer6875

I know this guitar, its a chibson
the video shows derringer using a custom Les Paul with white binding on both sides, Gibsons flagship full featured Les Paul, then the half arse cut down in quality is a standard, then a junior or studio for students or session players.
This is a standard Les Paul with everyone on the body from a custom Les Paul, the standards don't have white binding on both sides, gold tuners, gold bring, pick ups, black pick guards, black toggle switches and all the perks for a giving guitar.

The hell are you talking about that it's a Chibson??? Did you actually watch the video lol this is very clearly a Norlin era Gibson. The parts have been replaced but the guitar is legit

This guitar should be in that Paranormal museum with that doll Annabelle who lives in the glass box. I can clearly see that a demon inhabits that instrument making it sound as terribly horrible as it does. Personally, I think that you should have the instrument burned and cleansed of its evilness. Maybe at a Black Sabbath or Alice Cooper concert or some other sacred and holy venue. If they are not available a Kiss concert will do. But you would have to go to Detroit for it to work.

Looks like Brazilian to me. I have 25 years experience working with it. It has a red tint. East Indian rosewood doesn’t really have that. It’s night and day musically
