I live in Italy, seeing something like this for me is inconceivable XD When women get pregnant in italy a lot of the costs are remboursed by the government, except of non mandatory tests such as dna test, bitest etc. For labor and delivery we don't pay so seeing 27k just to give birth is so weird. I'm happy you've insurance so the cost is less, but I think of all the people who don't.

@@anonymous-cx7ng citizens and permanent residents. A portion of the tax we pay go towards healthcare funded by the government. I had a baby, breastfeeding support, antenatal appointments everything and just walked out. We also have 3 months of government paid maternity leave plus larger companies offer an additional 3-4 months of maternity pay so you get a total of 6-8 months paid leave

I’m so incredibly lucky that I live in the Uk, and the NHS is an absolute god send, I’m currently pregnant with my second baby and I’m glad that I don’t have to stress over hospital bills, all my antenatal health care and prescriptions are free and it really is a weight off my mind.
Don’t know how it is in the US atm but my partner isn’t allowed to a lot of my antenatal appointments so we’ve decided to pay for a private scan so he can at least see his child once during our pregnancy. X

Yeah. I had a planned surgery with a contracted provider When I was under anesthesia the hospital brought in a surgeon to assist my doctor who was not on my insurance. He charged my insurance $32,000 and my insurance refused to pay. He started sending me threatening letters saying that he was going to charge me the $32,000. I asked him where my consent form was because I have consent forms for all my contracted providers in regards to this surgery. I also told him that if he pursued it I would be getting a lawyer since this was a planned elective surgery and at no point was it life threatening. His office has been quiet ever since. I don’t think it’s over but it has stopped the threats.

Good break down! This is probably the most expensive part of having a baby, after this the costs are much much less. I also met my out of pocket max in January!!! I planned an insurance plan that has a family deductible before they start paying, so I met the deductible for our family. So we only had to pay 20% for all the baby's costs from hospital stay and this first year. Also, no doctor's actually work for the hospital, so you will always get a separate bill for medical services for every provider you see.

  • @randomnielle

The medication part of the epidural costs are usually on the hospital bill but the bill you’re talking about is probably only for the anesthesiologist who gave you your epidural. Check your itemized bill for fentanyl and bupivicaine and add it to your anesthesiologist bill to see how much it really costs to get an epidural! At least that’s how we bill in AZ. I have had 5 kids and I am a pharmacy billing specialist for the hospital company I had my babies at! Like you said, it’s really confusing!

Ouch. I just had our first baby in August. Luckily I live in Canada so I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. I had a difficult pregnancy and delivery and ended up with an emergency c section, with multiple pediatrician visits. We were in the hospital for 6 days.

For those saying that they would rather pay less in taxes and then pay the bill separately. I’m sure the income, property, sell, (federal, state, local taxes) we already pay can fund healthcare and education. Instead of funding countries that do provide healthcare for their citizens and the military.

  • @emily57644

I think it’s important to remember that even though two pediatricians came in and saw your child while in the hospital they didn’t charge you they build the insurance then you paid what the insurance did not cover. Also it is not as if the pediatrician is getting the entire amount (~200$/doc) in their salary this is the amount that they have to use to pay their salary, pay any staff salaries, pay any hospital fees to be affiliated with such hospital ext.

Wow! The unknown of cost stressed me out in pregnancy. Luckily, we used a birth center and it was a set price before hand and after insurance about 2k including pre and post natal care. I had a 4th degree tear which at the hospital would of required an OR for I have no idea how much. But at the birth center the doctor was able to preform the stitching in my room.

You and I had our babies just a few days apart. My total bill was about the same before insurance. After insurance, we paid about $6000 out of pocket. We only stayed in the hospital 24 hours. I had a natural delivery and did not receive any anesthesia or pain meds beyond ibuprofen. I can only imagine how expensive it would have been if I had gotten an epidural and c section. I did not request an itemized bill because it would have just pissed me off to see how much they charged me for a salt water drip😑

What doesnt fully cover is genétic test which are really expensive. Healthcare in the USA is a business that's why is so expensive
I usted to work for a medical device company and a single product is sold $200-400 depending the material. Every country in the world ads like $25 to that product. The USA because they sterilized them on hospital it charges patients $1200 per product

Americans complacent with the system are coping. I see the creator here is regurgitating all the talking points of politicians funded by private healthcare. The tax burden in countries with universal healthcare is very similar. In USA we pay high taxes (for the military) and (on top of that) high premiums for the right to health. The gov’t could maintain the same tax burden but spend the money wisely (less military -> universal care) but private healthcare makes billions off us and scare millions with “higher taxes” when it just isn’t the case.
What’s even more pathetic is we pay more for healthcare per person but have poorer health outcomes per person (eg USA top list for maternal mortality compared to other colonial powers). The current system preys on your detriment but…middle class people will keep telling themselves this is OK , soothing themselves with industry talking points like “b-b-bUt HiGh tAxEs!”

    • @panyrosas
      @panyrosas Рік тому

Oh and you can’t forget “long lines” talking point when any average disabled person in the USA can tell you about the long lists they had to endure to see specialists. The waiting times are very similar. Americans just pay more. When the system is profit based, you will be up-charged. When the system is a public good, there’s no incentive to up-charge. Basic econ.
Please be more critical of the talking points you are inclined to spit. There are literal think tanks and lobbying trails that sedate Americans to accept the status quo.

@@TheBudgetingWife they're not really THAT different... in fact, taxes are lower for some groups in Canada ... The biggest difference is that the wealthiest 1% in the United States have a lot of available tax deductions. Most people are not in the wealthiest 1%, hence the "1%" specification. The top tier tax bracket in Canada is actually lower than it is in the United States. Like I say the main difference is the amount of deductions available to wealthy people in the United States..
"For tax year 2022, U.S. federal income tax brackets range from 10% to 37% for individuals. In Canada, for 2021, the range is 15% to 33%. In the U.S., the lowest tax bracket for the tax year ending 2022 is 10% for an individual earning $10,275 and jumps to 22% for those earning $41,775. The corresponding bottom Canadian bracket stays at 15% until $49,020.21"
AND the United States has no excuse... The larger volume of people would enable greater economies of scale which could easily cover these costs.

Every American president who has won since Reagan has had donations from private healthcare. The insurance companies are very powerful. They pay politicians to lie to citizens and keep middle class Americans docile. For if the middle class ever feels inclined to question the system, the cushion between the ultra wealthy and the poor will diminish. Keeping the voting middle class hopeful but ignorant maintains faith in the system and the fat pockets of CEOs and shareholders.
