    It blows my mind that Scott can shoot a BFR one handed. I have a couple hundred rounds through my BFR .500 Magnum and feel like a pro with little muzzle flip on full power loads, but Scott does just as well one handed. I tried shooting one handed a few times and the gun twirls me around 90°.
    Scott is truly a beast.

    Little bit of physics, you can always tell right away if a round penetrates the armor by how much the armor reacts. If the armor jumps around, this means there is more energy being distributed through out the armor. If it doesn't move much, then the energy is being carried through and into the body behind it.

    Fast and light always does it when it comes to armor. I don’t think they were thinking of such light loads for caliber back in 95 when they rated it for 44 mag. By the way what sick bastard came up with +p 45/70😂.

    • @Bob5mith
      @Bob5mith 6 років тому +10

      45-70 +P is also known as "modern levergun" loads. Buffalo Bore calls them 45-70 Magnum. They are effectively the same as 450 Marlin. Two of Buffalo Bore's three 450 Marlin loads are rated for 25 fps less than their 45-70 Magnum loads with the exact same bullet. The third is rated the same and all the 45-70s are cheaper.
      There's also an even higher load called "modern rifle." I don't think anyone sells them. They're handload only specs.

      Not allways, it depends on many factors like:
      Bullet density
      Bullet design
      And caliber.
      If you make a bullet whith the basic design and a very light weight for the caliber (lets say a 80gr 9mm) you only would have a gloryfy BB gun.

    Body armor and similar technology have come quite a long way. Considering how old those vest panels were they held up extremely well. It would be interesting if you put a "CALL OUT" to your viewers to see if you could get a donation of some of the "clothing armor" that is produced. They are jackets, coats, etc. that are worn as clothing but are actually ballistic protection. There probably aren't many people with that equipment hanging around but it would make for an interesting video. Great job brother !!

      @exothermal.sprocket 5 років тому

      @@dundonrl Absolute hogwash.
      .45-70 or .450 Marlin can be loaded pretty much evenly. The sort of penetration power gotten with 420 to 550 gr hard-cast slugs is ridiculous.
      No .500 S&W with lower sectional density will achieve the same results or the same velocity. The case has lower volume. At 75 to 100 yards the .500 will have lost a LOT more velocity, and energy.
      -------------------
      "In preparing for this hunting, the Beiters conducted extensive penetration tests of Crater bullets, shooting 400 rounds of 450 Marlin into various test mediums. The loads consisted of 550 grain Crater bullets, xx grains of IMR 3031 powder and CCI primers.
      "First, they shot 8 to 10 inch thick Elm tree trunks at 25 yds and 10 to 14 inch thick Maple tree trunks. The Crater bullets zip thru these tree trunks. Then they placed a quarter inch thick steel plate backed by 48-inch thickness cardboards at 50 yds. After penetrating the steel plate, the Crater traveled 30 to 35 inch of the 48-inch thick cardboards. When the steel plate was removed, the bullet completely penetrated the 48-inch thick cardboard. After listening to the Circle CE Ranch's owner's story about a Missouri hunter who pumped 5 rounds of 7MM mag at a Bison and the animal still traveled 500 yds., the Beiters were happy about their choice of the 550 grain Crater. "
      ------------------
      "" I shot a 2400 pound range bull (livestock) at 47 paces or around 50 yards with a load I worked up with your 420 gainers. The load is xx grs. of Alliant #7 compressed using 210 Fed primer. The load averaged 2097 fps. in 10 shot string, and shot under an inch at 100 yards. The rifle is zeroed at 175 yards shooting 4.2 inches high at 100 yards. The bullet entered the left side of the 2400 pound bull crushing the left and right shoulder joints tearing 3 inch hole though the top of the lungs and exited skipping along its happy way though the S.D prairie. The bull in an instant of impact dropped to the ground, made a slight effort to return to its feet and died. I shot the wet newspaper at 100 yards which was stacked 6 feet thick and got complete penetration." "

      @@dundonrl What sort of barrel length and pressure are you dealing with? If we're comparing redline handloads for both, the effectiveness and penetration award still goes to .45-70. Just science. Heavy-for-caliber slugs always go deeper and maintain better BC's and SD's. Energy means nothing if you can't reach vitals, lose 30-50% velocity at 100 yards, or have a hard time finding data for loading stupid pressures.
      Same thing goes for rifle calibers. High SD's and BC's means better efficiency at anything beyond close range, which means deeper and more effective kills on game. Frankly, slowing a slug down below a certain threshold produces deeper penetration due to lack of friction on impact.

      @@exothermal.sprocket Well the BHA Model 89 will take pressures that would grenade a modern Henry or Marlin firing 45-70 and would put a hurting on a Ruger #1. (Barnes max loads for a 45-70 in a Ruger #1 are only 45000 psi, well above the maximum SAAMI specs for the cartridge.) As far as load data, the 500 S&W Mag and 500 Auto Max are the same cartridge (just rim turned down on Auto Max) and Buffalo Bore is getting 2300 FPS out of their 400 gr bullets from an 18" bbl, which is 4697 ft lbs energy.

    Just because the armor stops the bullet does not mean you survive. If you wear a t-shirt and get run over by a truck, the t-shirt will stop the tire from touching your chest. And it won't matter one bit. Body armor is tested with clay torsos so the impact can be measured for depth of compression. Over a certain amount of compression, you die, whether or not the round penetrates.

      He used a bag of sand, that was duct taped, as a backstop which is why most of the rounds did not penetrate, of course there is certain rounds capable of penetrating but you can't expect to the same results on a human being, as we are not made out of sand.

      The first case of which I’m aware of a policeman being killed on the job, while wearing a vest, was years ago, in Memphis, I believe, when a patrolman was shot at night, with a hot .38. The bullet pushed the soft body armor between the officer’s ribs, causing internal bleeding and a collapse of his lung(s). This was prior to GPS monitoring, and fancy 10-24 buttons. When he stopped responding, they didn’t know exactly where he was. When he was found, he was, regrettably, expired. The vest stopped the bullet, but not the trauma.
      I keep a hard dyneema plate over my heart that exceeds the rating of the vest, because a 44mm divot on my sternum is unacceptable, but I cannot wear 3 or 4 armor at work, so that’s the best I can do, in the interim. I have a level 4 ready to go if I receive some intel that something is going to occur, but it’s not at all likely.
      Stay safe out there.

      Shadowgt I don't know if any completed guns are available, but I know the barrels are available. They use the same bolt and everything else as other LR308 pattern rifles. Only thing is the inside of the pmags need to be filed down slightly to feed the fatter bullets without binding up, but the modification doesn't hurt the use of .308 and it takes a couple minutes according to a UA-cam video I saw on it.
      Energy-wise it's comparable to the 500 automax (maybe a little less), but the capacity is the same as 308 and it holds its energy longer (spitzer bullets instead of flat points).
      I'm curious about terminal effect vs a 45-70 or a 500 automax due to different bullet shape per energy levels.
