I’ve always compared console vs PC to car culture. The majority of people just need a reliable car to get from point A to point B, something with the essentials and minimal maintenance required, those are console gamers. Meanwhile PC gamers are the enthusiasts who want to get under the hood and fine tune everything to their liking. Both are perfectly valid lifestyles and both will continue to be supported by the industry.
I think the feeling like the new consoles don’t have any games mostly comes from the fact that it takes forever and a day for any AAA game to come out nowadays. Even then it’s a complete shot in the dark whether or not the game is even going to be good once it finally comes out. Studio reputation doesn’t even mean anything anymore considering Redfall and Suicide Squad both came from highly regarded studios but turned out to be total train wrecks. At this point last gen we had DOOM 2016, Sunset Overdrive, Final Fantasy 15, Uncharted 4, The Witcher 3, just to name a minuscule amount, but I could count all the great original AAA games to come out exclusively on this gen so far on two hands. In closing, consoles aren’t dying, but the massive graphical showcases designed to get you to buy the latest consoles are becoming far less common.
