what i'm doing in uganda!! last minute pack with me :)

- For 3 months, I headed on the programme ICS to work with the charity Restless Development in Uganda!! In this very quick video (where I pack for Uganda literally at the LAST minute because I suck at being organised...!!), I discuss some of the issues around volontourism, international development and white saviourism - I also really encourage you to do your own research! Especially if you're interested in volunteering abroad, it's so important to be well-informed on where your money's going and how a charity operates, as well as social issues if entering black spaces as a white person!! I love the IG page @nowhitesaviors.
I'm now officially back from Uganda (ayyyy) and will be posting the vlogs v v soon!
ICS (international citizen service!) is a UK-government funded programme. You have to successfully get through the interviews before fundraising £800, attending a 4-day training camp and then doing in-country training too! I love it because community leaders in rural Uganda guide the nature of the work and request the charity be there in their village!! Restless also train the same number of Ugandan volunteers, who join up with us to form one big team; it's a cross-cultural working relationship! Restless' work centres on youth empowerment - particularly on SRHR in schools, practical enterprise skills for out of school youth (like reusable pad making!) and setting up infrastructure for young people to have their voices heard by community leaders. Eeeeeeek get ready for the vlogs!! x
when she left, theresa may was prime minister, she came back when boris johnson was prime minister
so sayeth the court Bard
okay
AICB
Wait boris is prime minister
WHAT THE FUCK
Love that you did your research and are aware of what problems volunteering could actually contribute to. So many people don't
jenna jan she took unskilled labour opportunities that could have been given to local people. instead of deciding to donate money to train and pay local people to do the work, she believed she was so special that they needed her. and it was worth wasting money on flights and polluting the planet so that it could be jade who worked those hours.
I was worried that you might have fallen into the trap of voluntourism etc, but you seem to be SO aware of everything & I appreciate that!!
strawberry what trap?
I’m a Nigerian living in Nigeria and I absolutely adore that you brought up the “white saviour” thing because there are a lot of white people who come here thinking they can just give us whatever we want and it’s really not like that. So I just wanted to say thank you for being so understanding and for looking from our own point of view

as a black woman it's so incredibly inspiring to see you use your status and privilege to genuinely help out communities in the way in which they need it, instead of just going to a foreign countries and "help out" in ways which don't actually benefit these people. thank you x
Rex Oper she spent 3 months in Uganda using her privilege to assist small communities that wanted help, there’s lots n lots of information of the specific things she did in her latest video
Hi Jade, I am currently an International Development undergrad. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you highlighting the issues with volunteering. I did a module this year on the white saviour complex so I appreciate you highlighting how to volunteer ethically. Good luck with your trip! 😌
Rex Oper the unemployment rate is 2.1% how hard do you want the locals to have to work?
thank you for educating yourself on the white saviour complex, i'm really happy that you put so much research and thought into this before going. stay woke!! 💛💛
I will be so happy to hear all about what you've done and learnt while you were there! These kind of experiences can be life changing!
what is the name of the documentary you watched? I'm interested in learning more about this topic and I'd love to watch it!

Thank you so much for speaking up about voluntourism and the white saviour complex. It’s something that a lot of people are still so unaware about which is a shame because it is a huge issue that needs to be addressed. ❤️
I love you and I've missed you!!! You are such a blessing💓
This is soo useful for others, not just for genuine reasons but also the banter 😂❤️

I am so excited to hear about how you find the ICS experience! I was thinking about applying but was unsure if it was right for me, especially considering the little information I could actually find online! Your feedback on the whole experience is something that is going to be invaluable to me - as are all your travel videos (along with your study videos that single handedly managed to carry me though A Levels a few months ago)! ✌🏼️💕
Have fun in Uganda! I'm actually from there 💗

Giiiiirl, I will be going to Uganda for a year to volunteer (with a German governmentally funded program called Weltwärts) and I am exciteddd
I went to Swaziland for two weeks where I spent 5 days at a project site. The majority of the time we were on our own building and we only spent like two days with the kids. All across the country they have national care points (NCPs) where charities are asked to come and help build facilities like nurseries which is what I did. Everyone that lived near the site were so amazing and lovely and even cooked us all food on the last day and gave us performances and beautiful speeches about how grateful they were for us coming. As we only spent less than a week at the site and weren’t around natives that much I feel that it was actually meaningful. The kids were so nice and lovely. It was life changing. The whole trip was. Also side note I was lucky because in Swaziland (near South Africa) there is an extremely low risk of malaria so I didn’t even have anti malarials. I’m only 15 so I have so many more experiences to come and I’m so excited to go and travel more. x
Sounds sooo exciting!!
I love you jade!! ❤️
Hey Jade, I really missed watching your videos and I just want to let you know that you're such an inspiration to me. I know so many adjectives but none of them can describe how much you mean to me. 😌❤

Hello jade im from uganda hope you like it there
Are you doing it as a YP or as a team leader? I'm working NCS at the moment and would love to work on ICS at some point
I must say, I like your name. Not sure what it means yet (I'll look it up in a dictionary later) but I really like it.
Now I've just looked up the word "Jade". I still like the sound or the pronunciation of your name. But some definitions according to Google Translate don't sound very pleasant. Nonetheless, I still like you, and a part of me wishes to meet you one day cause you seem to be very nice and sweet.
Jade, could you tell us the name of the documentary you saw? I find It very interesting. Great video and really inspiring.🌿🌺🥰
I have volunteered on an ICS programme and worked for one of the charities which delivered the programme. I can say, you will have the best time ever, make amazing memories and help communities who need it the most.
Hi Annie, I hope you don't mind me asking you a little about your ICS experience (just what you did and how you found the experience in general) as I was thinking of applying and am only able to find a very limited amount of experience feedback online! Any help or enlightenment on ICS you could give would be massively appreciated! X
Lily Barry I worked on a water, sanitation and hygiene programme in Tanzania. We focused on building toilets and hand washing stations at local schools and in communities and educating around safe hygiene practices.
Each of the organisations works on different programmes and in different ways, so ensure you do your research so you go with the best charity for you. It’s an incredible 3 months, you work with in country counterparts and get to live in a host home with a local family. You build amazing bonds with everyone and it’s super hard to leave.
Annie thank you so much! Did you have to go through a large interview process before getting to go? If so, is there any advice you could give? X
Lily Barry You do have to attend a group assessment day. It’s usually split into two: a group assessment and then a 1-1 interview. It’s honestly nothing to worry about. You’re not in competition with other people, as there’s enough space for everyone. You’re mainly be assessed on your suitability for the programme - at the start of the day the lead will mention the criteria that you are being assessed against :)
Annie thank you again! I really appreciate you answer all my questions! :)
hope you have the best time Jade! I would love to do volunteering abroad when I'm a bit older. I have been picked to go to Vietnam in a year and a half to teach in a school and build a library. (I'll be 16 then) I have to fundraise it myself though,,. £2900!
watching this when i should be packing... 😬
Live in UK but I am from Uganda a Thank You JAADE
Can I do this experience at the end of year 13 and still going to uni the following September? Love u jade 💙
