While I like singing hymns better than (most) modern worship songs, we should be careful not to essentially tell Christians today, “All the worship music we need has already been written, so we don’t need your songs.” Sure, there should be lofty language in some worship music, but there should also be simple, accessible language in others. After all, singing lofty language only honors God as far as the singer understands it. Let every Christian worship God from the heart when they sing, whatever they sing--new or old, lofty or simple.
@@xhaltsalute The fact is: we DO NOT need "new hymns" at all. Zero. None. Wannabe Stevie Nicks imitators can play at bars. Hymns should STAY THE SAME over decades and centuries. No copyrights. No copyright royalties. No DVD's. No "merch" at all.
@@scottmcloughlin4371 Mmm, Psalm 40:3, 98:1, 96:1-13, 33:1-22, 96:1, 95:1-11, 144:9, 149:1, Isa 42:10, Ex 15:1-27, Zeph 3:17 Of course why do what Scripture says, when man’s tradition trumps all!
@@kristieswift4102 Interesting question. Do you now, why the Salvation Army never used pipe organ (the self playing street organ doesn't count)? Because they didn't say "the problem are today's people". The book Exodus shows us, that the people got fresh Mannah everyday. A church shouldn't be a museum. But this doesn't mean, everything new is good and everything old is outdated. Well I play some hymns, that's no question, but as with other songs, I carefully check, is it helpful, does it help the congregation to come into God's presence, is the style helpful. In contemporary worship music, there are also songs, that are like hyms and under the old songs are also ones, you could easily see as (possibly bad) example for today's songs. And not to forget, there also were hymns with a wrong message or with a view of God, that isn't really covered by the Bible.
Not sure how y’all lost the hymns, but in a Baptist church I go to have hymnal books, I even own “The Christian Life Hymnal,” anyway, my favorites are “Holy, Holy, Holy,” “God, Our Father, We Adore Thee!,” and “Jesus Loves Me.”
I would argue that a small child singing "Jesus Loves Me" is just as beautiful to God as a full-on orchestra and choir singing a lofty hymn. No matter how simple or elaborate, worship should come from the heart, in spirit and in truth. Worship is about pleasing God, not the masses.
I agree with this! I've been attending an addiction ministry and have seen God draw praise out of people who used to hate Jesus. The sincere worship from a saved sinner is indescribably beautiful, no matter how it's expressed!
That is true, but only to some extent. If the only measure of our theology (and our worship is simply an extension of that) is what a sweet little child or a mentally impaired person can understand and render to God then why would most of the Bible have been written and left for us to plumb the depths of? No need for commentary, sermons, seminaries, and no need for musical skill, art and poetry (which as Todd points out should be part of our music for worship). So our whole Christian endeavor should be “both-and”; simple and profound, accessible and deep.
Lord Jesus please give me strength. I seem to bear the weight of the world on my shoulders as a single mom, I often face challenges that can seem insurmountable especially with raising two children with special needs. I’m trying to balance everything but Lord I’m struggling to make ends meet, to pay bills, and to put food on the table for my children. Jesus hear my prayers❤️
Just prayed for you. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed in You because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an Everlasting Rock.” Isaiah 26:3-4
Years ago, Christian neighbors had a gathering and we were invited though we left when the so-called Christian rock music started. An unsaved neighbor who didn’t enjoy the loud, raucous music that no neighbor could not tell was Christian came and asked me if I was there during the music and I replied no I left when the so-called music began. He was happy to hear this and I was thankful I was able to maintain my Christian testimony. This all reminds me of a dear lady I knew for many years. She had served diligently in a Baptist church in Boise, being faithful for a decade or more. She decided to work in the teen department. When she walked in, the room was blackened and a rock band was playing, and the atmosphere was like you had just stepped into a bar. When she complained, they told her, "Well, if you do not like bars, you will not like working here." She immediately left this Baptist church. The only instruments we see in heaven are harps accompanying worship song. "Rev. 5:7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, reach holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them ya kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Though other instruments were used to worship in Israel, including the pipe, though never drums. When Christ rules the world from Jerusalem, horses will ring out as they move in worship for God with bells attached to them. Zechariah 14:20-"In that day 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' shall be engraved on the bells of the horses." We know the music of heaven will be perfect holiness, purity, and innocence as these are some of Christ’s attributes. It will be far more undefiled and innocent than we can imagine! No worldly/secular/trendy music or beat, and immodest dress. The traditions/culture/society, ways of men, are not of Christ-Colossians 2:8, Matthew 15:9, etc. It is all wanting to be rocking and rolling with satan’s sensual ways. If rock music was not satan’s forte, it would not be in our so-called churches. David played lovely melody on a harp that caused a demon to leave Saul. (1 Samuel 16) Saul would rather be plagued by a demon than repent of his sins. We know sexy, rock music with its exposing attire is all-pleasing to satan and the demons. The Grammy awards ceremony worshipped satan with it. We know the demons did not flee. Various rock groups worship satan in song. Ancient harps and harp artwork have been located in Israel and other locals by archeologists, dating back to BC, and they appear to be the same as the harps we see and hear today though with only 10 to 22 strings. Today’s harps own 20 to 40 strings. A Jewish woman of Israel who is an expert in ancient harps, stated that those who hate the Jews hate harps. Perhaps stated from her personal experiences of being an Israelite. Women in churches adore sexy rock drummers and guitarists. Everyone knows the truth! There was a time when choirs were placed in the back of many churches, in the back loft-no show-off talent displayed. We are to dwell on those things lovely and pure. Rock music does not have a lovely melody of purity and innocence. There is a video of the naked cowboy in a church where supposedly the Gospel is preached and the women are going crazy wanting him. This is not of Almighty Holy God and the true Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ of the Bible is all innocence, purity, being undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens; Hebrews 7:26. Ephesians 4 says music is to be melodious, where God’s true children sing and make melody in hearts to the LORD. A sexy-driven beat is blasphemous to what is exampled. We are to be imitators of Christ and His example is harp music with Biblical lyrics as the Song of Moses will be sung in heaven. Archeologists have located ancients harps in Israel that resemble today’s harps, though only holding 22 strings. We must ask ourselves do the instruments allowed in churches represent a chaste, innocent, undefiled, holy melody that represents all of Christ’s undefiled attributes? Do you not find it interesting that satan was worshipped at the Grammy Awards? Did any rock and rolling church of the sexy beat expose and condemn this? I will add, placing drums behind plexiglass drum shields do not transpose the driven beat into a holy melody.
A long way around saying “I don’t like that style of music.” The fellow in this video bloviating about what he thinks is proper is doing the same. It is his opinion, and he is entitled to it, but what he finds worshipful is different than what someone else does.
@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlinI haven't found that to be true. Fervency of emotion doesn't equal being hot, or cold. TSwift concerts are exceptionally fervent and emotional...but are cold.
I am not sure about this. We should not be all "doomy". What should the people have said during a time when mary worship was present in basically all churches? That was before Luther came around? When people were tortured and burned at the stake? I don't think today is THAT bad compared to things past in the history of the church.
A return to the old morality and practices are now needed more than ever. Hearing the olde hymns make my spirit soar. The same cannot be said for Contemporary Christian songs, which pale in comparison.
No Jesus is needed more than ever we could have old morality and practices but if that is all you seek then that is just behaviorism or as Jesus put it cleaning the outside of the cup. Don’t get me wrong I am disappointed with modern morals and want things to change but the best change is the salvation of the lost
One thing that bugs me about praise and worship today is you can't really hear yourself sing or harmonize with the person near you. There's just the murmur of the congregation drowned out by the worship band. I'd like it if they could return to accoustic instruments that people can actually harmonize with.
One of the purposes of the "worship" music and theater is to isolate the believer from others, whereas, part of true worship is to foster a unity of spirit and feeling a part of God's Family
I hear a continual drone of chords or banging of cymbals in just about every contemporary Christian song. It's impossible at times to find the melody, and forget trying to harmonize!
@@twistedlimb4053byou know exactly what I meant. Also we know Baal doesn’t hold a candle to the real God YHWH. Jesus not having an earthly house has nothing to do with what I said
No! Hymns should praise the Creator! The first commandment is to worship God NOT preach the gospel (Mk.12:30). The gospel is crucial but, unlike the Creator, it won’t be around forever?! Simonline 🏴🤔🙏😀👍🇮🇱
There's nothing wrong with music styles and languages keeping up with the times. The words can still be biblical, with modern English being used (or any other language where the church is at)
Yayks 😳 Heres howYahweh says He wants to be worshipped Psalm 150 Praise Yah! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse. Praise Him for His mighty deeds; Praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. Praise Him with trumpet blast; Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with tambourine and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. Praise Him with resounding cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise Yah. Praise Yah! If you play drums and guitar, Best you worship Yahweh with them. LOUDLY 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I was with you until you said, "the organ" 😂. A lot of smaller churches I attend do well to have any instrument and a song leader. But, those dear saints are striving to help people sing praises and thankfulness to our Lord. And, yes, we sing mostly hymns.
In the Church of Christ we sing acapella or without instruments. We have/use a song leader and we follow his lead in singing the hymm's or songs. It works very well for us.
I agree that the organ isn’t necessary but I would still argue that it is the best option when a church can afford it. Piano is a great option for smaller churches and I’m not opposed to acapella.
As a guitar and bass player in our church, I'm someone who enjoys both full orchestra and modern music, older hymns with just a piano and current worship with a good beat and heavy guitars. The truth is rarely only one or the other is right or wrong. The older hymns are great for doctrine, but (in general) don't move our emotions as part of worship. More of a head vs. heart thing. At the same time, modern worship can over-emphasize the emotional aspects of worship and have less doctrinal focus. More heart over head. But both are important. Truth and emotion are both important parts of worship. It's rare to find a song that does both, but they are out there. I encourage people to rely on the Holy Spirit and their God-given preferences when deciding which songs they personally use to worship. Some people worship best with traditional hymns. Some worship with modern songs and styles. We are both worshipping our great God. In this we can all be united.
There is some good modern music being written, but I do miss singing with a piano and a choir. There's something so beautiful about hearing the voices of those in the congregation lifted together in praise to our mighty and wonderful God. You don't get that with a 5 piece band and singers who are amplified over the instruments and the congregation.
I left the Mormon church for many reasons, one of them being the church finds the cross repulsive. I now attend a small church, about 40 members. We sing the old timeless hymns every Sunday using only a piano for an instrument and we have the Sacrament every Sunday
Good points here. But we have to be careful that we don't get legalistic about these matters insisting on one method and not accepting other styles which may in fact glorify God.
I think the more important question we should be asking ourselves about modern worship music is how much of it preaches Jesus Christ. Just like Sir Isaac Watts' music preaches the glory of Jesus and His Reign, we must treat the lyrical content of our music with as much respect and reverence as we would a Pastor's preaching. On one end of that spectrum, you have Elevation's (yes, I know) O Come to Altar that preaches beautifully of Jesus' mercy and forgiveness, and on the other end you have Hillsong Young and Free that make no more than contemporary pop music save for a few mentions of Jesus or God here and there. This is so important because whereas a preaching may pass through the head and then to the heart, music preaches the truth of Jesus to the heart directly. I don't think instrumentation matters as much as Todd makes it out to be here in the video. Yes, it does matter, but really the whole congregation could be singing acapella, and it would sound no less beautiful than the organ. Heck, the Psalms tell us to sing and shout our praises to the Lord. So, whether you sing hymns, acapella, or modern praise and worship music with heavily produced instrumentation, if it preaches the truth of Jesus Christ and God's word, then our hearts are preached to with the true gospel and Jesus is glorified no less.
2 Corinthians 11:3-6 "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" There is a simplicity which slays the simple, and also a high-mindedness which slays the lofty. A broken and contrite heart God will not despise. With that in balance, there is nothing wrong with Isaac Watts hymns unless they be used to condemn that which God has not condemned.
@@EdwardMorris-p3y He is suggesting that modern Christian worship music is not godly enough. God has ordained praise from the mouth of babes. Simple heart-felt worship is just as legitimate as the hymns of Isaac Watts.
Every part of that montage is 87,644 times better than any modern, emotive praise chorus. If those hymns don't excite you, it says something about your spiritual condition, and it ain't good.
I can't help but wonder, if churches knew the back stories that accompanied some of our greatest hymns, would they then use more of those hymns in their worship.
I heartily agree! As a pastor I sometimes include a song or hymn appropriate to my sermon and try to include its ‘human’ story. My hope is that my congregation will see the rich traditions and experience that have served to set our faith and worship in the bedrock of Christ. In a world seeking rootedness we ought to search into Christianity’s witness and experiences of pass generations. In our roots we can find hope for the future. Blessings.
I love the old hymns, love contemporary versions of old hymns, AND I love new songs written by creative, talented musicians today! There are so many lesser known artists that get overshadowed by the “Big 3” and it’s a shame. Rich, biblically faithful lyrics & music is out there-old stuff and new! 😍
Excellent points Todd! I agree with you, as many of the old hymns still pop into my mind today. There have been some great contemporary songs as well. One that comes to mind is Sandi Patti's "Was it a Morning like this".
I suspect that too much of contemporary Christian music lyrics are about personal perceptions inspired more by experience rather than scripture. I think today's worship music is putting the emotional cart before the horse of reason and scripture. People should "get in the mood," not because of the music but because of the message contained in the lyrics.
When I became a believer the church we went to was going through a transition: should we be more contemporary or traditional? After five or six years they opted for two distinct services, one of each. My wife and I were very neutral and didn't get the controversy, we liked both even though I was a musician that played "contemporary" music outside of church. We thought that the whole subject was given too much emphasis. Not unimportant, but not worthy of major division. I love your channel, but I think yourself and a good number of the people commenting sound more like critics than worshipers. Worship in spirit and truth, make a joyful noise, and ask God what he thinks of YOUR worship not the ones trying to help. PS: organ? Where is that in the psalms? 🤣🤣 just kidding. Blessings to all! 🙏
There is great modern Christian music and my Church does a mix of modern, old school gospel and traditional hymns. Here's one from each category: Sandra McCracken - We Will Feast Rev. Milton Biggham and Lillian Lilly - Praise Him Austin Stone - It is Well The first verse of Psalm 96 says, "Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth"
In my experience rock and roll church comes with a complete ignorance of scripture and basically repeating a bunch of atheist myths about the Bible as if they are true. It's difficult to have any sort of theological discussion with someone who actually thinks that there's no correct interpretation of Scripture.
The Christian Church has sung these great hymns for 500 years, indeed some that we sing actually go back to the early centuries of the faith, and we have had no problem singing them through all the changes and styles of language that have taken place during that time. But it must be added that there are some great modern hymns too and we can sing them along with the older. The secret is discernment and a truly biblically aware leadership to decide which hymns should be sung in a particular church. The problem we have though is that in many churches the leadership is often ignorant of true biblical theology, and the of the benefits of understanding church history. They are more concerned to fill seats and church coffers and make people feel good about themselves than be honouring to God and create reverent services.
Isaac Watts is believed by many to have been a Unitarian. It is Isaac Watts who is largely responsible for the Protestant church jettisoning exclusive Psalm singing in worship. An perfect example of "will worship" (Colossians 2:23).
The sad part, the body of CHRIST as a church [es] have forgotten the true essence of worship. Yes, indeed, it's beautiful to hear those sounds of instruments and voices in one accord. But the Book of Revelation speak about and warning the churches, the LORD have somewhat against us churches, because we left our first love. Isaac Watts was concerned about souls, and many are still the same, I've been watching many of those preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of GOD on the street. They too say the same, concern for the souls. But we are only saved when we believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST and do His commandments. We're so focused on music and faith but these are counted nothing if there is no LOVE. Let us all come in one accord, having the Holy Spirit of GOD in us. Let us love one another. Not with empty words but indeed.
As both a minister of the gospel and a musician, I do 100% agree that most modern “worship songs” are simply bad. Not because they’re modern but because a lot of them are riddled with doctrinal issues and are written by second rate musicians. With that said though, not all modern songs are bad. In fact, some of the better ones out there don’t even come from the big-five (hillsong, bethel, elevation, maverick city, gateway). Although I do agree that a lot of hymns are superior to most modern worship songs in terms of the composition, where I do draw the line is elevating tradition and treating it as sacred. Several years ago, I was a member of a church that clung to a particular hymnal because the founder of the church composed it. The older folks simply refused to sing out of any other hymnal and rejected anything new. When the church started to grow, we voted on having projectors installed so people on the live stream could sing along with us on their mobile devices. It made the older church members mad to the point that they started to stir up division within the church. This happened for several months until it reached a breaking point and the church split. Christians squabbling over technology and hymnals. Imagine that! All that to say this, it’s ok to have your preferences but never elevate preferences if they don’t align with the word of God. God cares more about seeking and saving that which is lost than the church striving to be trendy or fighting to preserve tradition.
@@jamesbonnema1041 Well, when today's pop music often is noise without any meaning, worship music has always a good melody line, that can stand without the arrangement and good lyrics, what tells a good message.
At the first church I attended after got saved, they only sang hymns. They believed that one should be careful about music with a strong beat and vain repetition. At the church I attended now, the pastor and the music minister agree that modern church songs are needed to bring younger people to Jesus. I disagree, but I'm not in charge. The Word of God is what should bring younger people to Jesus. Hymns don't need to change. It bugs me when we sing what I think is a familiar hymn, but somebody will add verses or choruses to it, but I'm not going to change churches over it. We recently sang a song that repeats eight times in the tag, "Who we talking about? That's my King." If someone comes to (or leaves) a church because of the music, they're misguided. That's based on how it makes a person feel instead of focusing on worshiping God. A proper church should present the Gospel, then give Biblical references on how to know Jesus through sermons and music. They're not supposed to be entertainment centers.
There is a big difference in noise and music. When I shop the racket coming through the speakers sounds a lot like modern churches. Jesus called the place of worship a house of prayer, without reverence it's just a gathering place for goats to feed on whatever their flesh wants.
Very critical, as long as we are praising God from our hearts thats all that matters. Ephesians 5:19-20 ESV addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
@@datchet11 God has standards, and He won't lower them for anybody just because their intentions are pure. God specifically stated in Deut. 12. that He is to be worshiped according to _His_ instructions. Contrary to what "Christianity" believes, God _will_ and does ignore worthless worship.
Whatever instrument is used, it should be the best that instrumentalist has to offer. Preferences are a thing, but, when a congregation is meeting to worship together, there are some things that work better than others. I could easily compose an organ accompaniment that would sound beautiful, but no one could sing with it. An orchestral arrangement with unique chord structures can be very distracting. A well arranged song with drums, guitar, and bass can be used quite effectively to worship our God. Our best for congregational singing is not the same as singing a solo, or singing totally alone in your home.
I am so thankful I finally found a church that understands the point being made here. My church has limited instrumentation (a keyboard or guitar, that's it) and we all sing out of actual printed hymnals! No projection. No rock band. No Hillsong/Bethel/Elevation crap. Just tried and true hymns that have been thoroughly tested for their doctrinal strength. It's like a breath of fresh air compared to the overly emotional, charismatic mush-brain music played at most churches today.
In church services, our church still only sings the old hymns. However, due to Covid - we had to go to Zoom services. So our hymns are also shown on the screen.
I really like hymns, but I also like praise songs from the '80s, '90s and early to mid 2000s. Ever since 2006, I struggled with following the lyrics and melody of contemporary songs. I've also noticed how you can't tell Christian movies from clean-ish secular movies. It would be nice to see a decent Christian movie that isn't compromising.
Todd, if you read this, I’d love to know your biblical take on what’s happening in the world today, including the signs in the sky. Is Jesus about to come back?
I wasn't talking about hymns in particular, but I recently had a discussion with a colleague in church about this -- that contemporary Christian music seems really dumbed down in terms of what's musically possible, using similar, easy-to-play chords and the like. He said it does make the music more accessible, so that other people can reproduce it in their own local congregations, and that it also makes it easier for people to sing and follow along with. I don't disagree with that in the least, and being able to follow the music is good, but I sometimes worry that perhaps we've lost depth or craft of artistic expression as a result. Some hymns did use 7th chords, and I feel like I don't really hear a lot of those in contemporary Christian worship music.
I fall under the make joyful noise category, nuance is lost under sola vox. While on paper it works in practice i feel it doesn't. I think christian music sucks but its not about what i think of it, its bout singing Gods praises. Lyrically, what we see over time is the degradation of articulation. Read anything written over 100 years ago and its richer than anything now, books and music secular and spiritual. Like look at the song yankee doodle. A childrens song, it had a story line and some subliminal messaging that was degrogatory but in a way that shaped how people saw each other. Now we have baby shark.... doo doo doo. I feel churches should be more careful as to what they allow to be sung for corporate worship truly examining the lyrics and assiring they are gospel saturated, Christ honnoring God exalting and Holy spirit lead. Sadly music is driven largely by money now so slap a christian label on something sub par and its suddenly a hit is what were left with. Hymns are beautiful id love to see their revival. Why not encourage the excellence in music for God's glory? Lyrically and instrumentally.
The worship leader is the pastor. You can have a worship service without music. Christ did not walk around Israel with a band following him to hypnotize people. "The music must not turn the church into an audience enjoying the music but into a congregation singing the Lord's praises in His presence" -- Jehan Cauvin (John Calvin) "Christian music is becoming not a Christ-centered thing. Not even a song-centered thing, which it used to be. Christian music is becoming so much an artist/personality/celebrity-centered thing. The ministry is severely hampered as it is. It won't be long until the music is going to become totally irrelevant--and that is the worst thing that could happen. See, the worst thing that anyone could say about Christian music isn't that it's wrong theologically or that it's heresy. The worst thing anybody could possibly say after hearing a Christian song is, 'So what?'" -- Michael Card
Modern "praise and worship" music makes me want to gag. I only go to small churches where there is congregational singing of the old hymns such as in Heavenly Highways or Great Hymns of the faith. The old hymns are more powerful, emphasize the blood of Christ and what He did for us, instead of what we do for Him. Plus there is something lifting and bonding about singing yourself in a group as opposed to listening to someone else sing. Singing makes you feel better (i.e. joyful). If I walk into a church house and there is a drum set on the stage for the band and a light show, then I know I'm in the wrong place.
If we want to worship with good music, our family would need to travel an hour to church rather than worshipping with local believers. We've done that in the past, but end up having little to no fellowship with those we worship with. There are some local churches that have more traditional and lofty music, but then we forced to disagree on fundamentals with them. Either they are legalistic, or they have a very big misunderstanding of how one is saved and what baptism is supposed to do. I have led music in the past in some churches, and have tried to help as a member of a praise band in others. It is nearly impossible, without going to the nearest metropolis, to find a church that participates in hymns without having to sacrifice something more fundamental. So we go where The Word is preached faithfully without adding to it, and deal with the unfortunate emptiness of most Contemporary Christian Music nearly all of the time.
Sola Vox. Zwingli, Bullinger, Calvin and Spurgeon agreed instruments had no place in the worship assembly. As did both John and Charles Wesley (the hymn writer). In Isaac Watts time, instruments and music used in worship were controversial; Watts was a hymn writer but did not write music.
How about the unaccompanied singing of the Biblical Psalms in worship? For the most part, the early church (until the 12th Century) regarded musical accompaniment as the unauthorized introduction of Levitical temple service into the Christian church. They sang a cappella (from the chapel, eg, the way we sing in church). In his commentary on Psalm 92:3, John Calvin wrote that the use of musical instruments was wholly an Old Testament thing. It would, he argued, ‘bury the light of the Gospel, should we introduce [and take a ‘silly delight’ in] the shadows of a departed dispensation.
This is definitely striking a chord with me, a pet peeve. We’ve gone from choir congregational singing praising God together to rock band concerts and worshiping the singers. Not my cup of tea. I’m extremely resistant to this new music and the churches who sponsor it. It feels wrong in my heart.
I like Hymns however I don’t think we should only sing hymns there are different types of music that glorifies God hymns are only one type. Ephesians 5:19 says “ speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” We should sing a combination of types of songs to the Lord what matters most is not the technical skill of the musician or the poetic skill of the writer but the heart of the person singing the song.
Yes a lot of Christian music these days is just carnal emotionalism just like the putting of music in the not so back ground of biblical teachings, its all just carnal cultural entertainment which creates in people a dull numbness of heart there is no seriousness and power in a lot of messages so they feel the need to put dramatic music in the background to manipulate peoples carnal emotions. 🙏✝️
Hi. I would like to see contemporary worship artists and bands take Isaac Watts songs, including his lyrics, and put to a more modern touch. Sorta like Come Thou Fount - David Crowder Band.
New Covenant Whole Gospel: How many modern Christians cannot honestly answer the questions below? Who is the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Who is the “son” that is the “heir” to the land in Matthew 21:37-43? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary? What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. God is not now a “racist”. He has extended His love to all races of people through the New Covenant fulfilled by His Son’s blood at Calvary. The Apostle Paul warned against using “genealogies” in our faith in 1 Tim. 1:4, and Titus 3:9. If the New Covenant is "everlasting" in Hebrews 13:20 and the Old Covenant is "obsolete" in Hebrews 8:13, why would any Christian believe God is going back to the Old Covenant system during a future time period. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8, 3:16? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. Well, is it entertainment or is it worship? Hearts joining together in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, edifying one another in singing and worship, a pleasant noise. Sing.
My girlfriend said to me, 'you haven't got a very big organ'. I replied, I know, but it's not used to playing in a cathedral. 🎹😂.. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Forgive me Father.
I prefer the older, more classic hymns as they have right theological language. Just wanted to add: Please pray for Russell Brand. Last Tweet I read from him was a quote by Andy Stanley 🤦♀️😬
@BasedZoomer He's one of the worst false preachers to ever come out. Todd Friel has multiple videos on this channel about him, but the latest video shows Stanley talking about detaching the Old Testament completely in his church; that somehow it has no relevance to Christians today. He speaks blasphemy and hypocrisy at every turn.
So many, many cultures throughout the world. So many, many styles and forms of music. To silo worship music into a personal preference and legalistically try to enforce it on to the entire population is completely missing the point of worship from the heart of man.
Grace is biblically defined as God's unmerited favor or mercy. Despite "Christianity" perverting the term to preach lawless gospels about its fake Christ, it does NOT give ppl a license to disregard the Law. The fact that someone cannot earn God's mercy by law-keeping doesn't mean they are above the Law. Nobody is.
Please! Someone, anyone elaborate on whether secular music is appropriate for believers to listen to? I understand discernment is key with pretty much everything. I'm not talking about music with foul language. Or sexual in reference. My desire for secular music has faded. But tonight I found myself listening to an 80s playlist on Spotify. I did a lot of singing, dancing, while baking cookies. My husband was concerned 😂
No it shouldn't be the loftier language possible... if the people don't understand the language.... If the artiulation is too lofty, people can't understand, they can't affirm the truth, . 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.
If I don't understand the Old English language, I ask someone or look it up. In the hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," I didn't know what a fetter was. ("Let thy goodness like a fetter bind my wandering heart to Thee.") A fetter is chain that binds a person's ankles so they can't run away.
@@NBK1122 You know what the issue with that is? It was the catholic church's main argument agiant the use of hymns in church.... Worship was never orginals hymns it was in latin and in was georgaian chant and the argument against having hymns in the people's language it that it not lofty enough. 500 years later we're making the same argument about in favour of hymns as cathoic were about bannign hymns
I'm good with "The Old Rugged Cross", "The Garden", "Just As I Am" I don't need to be "lofty" in my worship to God, I need to be humble and sincere... But you go ahead and worship "with your many words"...
Those songs are considered 'old-fashioned' & 'lofty' - few churches sing them anymore. Todd was demonstrating that the holy reverence of worship music from its inception has all but disappeared. CCM for the most part is indistinguishable from secular pop/rock. You'd probably enjoy the full episode (this was the edited version for YT) that's linked in the description box.
I've played in full bands and small four piece, either one was just as technical. It's true though, I think to myself those lyrics are weak but because of the instruments and key it works. Play skillfully to your best abilities for God.
So our songs need to be in lofty language, but our bibles need to be dumbed down? This makes no sense. Different people enjoy different styles of music. I can listen to beautiful old hymns, Southern Gospel, Micheal Card, Skillet, Keith Green, Twila Paris, Petra and Stryper. Their motives are all the same, honor God and draw people to Jesus.
Most hymns we think of as ‘doctrinally sound’ were invented 200 years ago by Methodists and have MAJOR theological issues. Many of our most famous hymns were written by those who later apostated.

While I like singing hymns better than (most) modern worship songs, we should be careful not to essentially tell Christians today, “All the worship music we need has already been written, so we don’t need your songs.”
Sure, there should be lofty language in some worship music, but there should also be simple, accessible language in others. After all, singing lofty language only honors God as far as the singer understands it. Let every Christian worship God from the heart when they sing, whatever they sing--new or old, lofty or simple.
Some modern Christian songs are really good. Just not that many in my opinion.
@@xhaltsaluteI totally agree with that. The good modern music is almost always not the most popular and this is especially true for worship music.

I've been missing the hymns for about 20 years now. We need to bring them back 🎉
But not every hymn can transport the message properly to *today's* people.
@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlinIs the problem the hymn, or is the problem, "Today's people?"
@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlin why would the purpose of a hymn by transporting a message to people? It's about worshipping the creator
Amen!
I agree with this! I've been attending an addiction ministry and have seen God draw praise out of people who used to hate Jesus. The sincere worship from a saved sinner is indescribably beautiful, no matter how it's expressed!
No need to argue, it is as beautiful.
Jesus Loves me is my favorite song of all music.
It is much deeper than many people admit.
Stop whining and be still. Plus why are your prayers public??!!
9 And they sang a new song, saying,“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them ya kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
Though other instruments were used to worship in Israel, including the pipe, though never drums. When Christ rules the world from Jerusalem, horses will ring out as they move in worship for God with bells attached to them. Zechariah 14:20-"In that day 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' shall be engraved on the bells of the horses."
We know the music of heaven will be perfect holiness, purity, and innocence as these are some of Christ’s attributes.
Today's lukewarm church is another sign that we're closing in on the end of days.

@@verkehrsteilnehmer-berlinI haven't found that to be true. Fervency of emotion doesn't equal being hot, or cold.

Well said…..loud, noisy and repetitious….with very little meaning…..
They aren’t playing worship music for you to hear and harmonise, it’s for worship of a Holy God!

Very good sir! Micah 6:8!
Older hymns don't move our emotions, but drums do?
If you think old hymns don't move our emotions I question whether you have actually listened to the lyrics....
Amen, worship songs aught be awe inspiring, theologically rich, and congregational!
Love hymns🎉 wish we sung them more!!! I get tired of 7/11 songs.
I attend an Assembly as well in Canada
So well said! Thank you. I know many of us agree completely.
Good points here. But we have to be careful that we don't get legalistic about these matters insisting on one method and not accepting other styles which may in fact glorify God.
A calvinist being legalistic? Never! :D
I love this video. I am a church organist, and I love the hymns. Thank you for making this video!
2 Corinthians 11:3-6
"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ"
There is a simplicity which slays the simple, and also a high-mindedness which slays the lofty. A broken and contrite heart God will not despise. With that in balance, there is nothing wrong with Isaac Watts hymns unless they be used to condemn that which God has not condemned.
Condemn which God has not condemned? What does that have to do with hymns?
Blessings.

I refer to a lot of the stuff they call Christian Contemporary music these days, as Christian bubblegum.
I only regret that I have but one like to give for this message.
I think the real point is that the lyrics need to be biblically accurate and too many songs today are not.
Wow! Thank you for putting to words what my worshipping heart longed to hear. Thank you.
As a church organist, I wholeheartedly agree!
Amen brother!
Here's one from each category:
Sandra McCracken - We Will Feast
Rev. Milton Biggham and Lillian Lilly - Praise Him
Austin Stone - It is Well
The first verse of Psalm 96 says, "Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth"
Thank you God for Todd. Amen.
I think he has been reading my mind in this presentation.
Modern CCM’s biggest artist is “Hillsong Barney and the Spasmodic Xylophones”.
So Very True. Can't find a local church that has music I can accept. So sad!
Modern Christian music is terrible.
For the devil.
Along with all current forms of art, in fact, the definition of art has changed, to allow any trash to be called art
@@jamesbonnema1041 Well, when today's pop music often is noise without any meaning, worship music has always a good melody line, that can stand without the arrangement and good lyrics, what tells a good message.
0:54 Pr. Friel, did you eventually grow into that shirt?
When’s the Steve Lawson commentary video coming?
There is a big difference in noise and music. When I shop the racket coming through the speakers sounds a lot like modern churches. Jesus called the place of worship a house of prayer, without reverence it's just a gathering place for goats to feed on whatever their flesh wants.
One thing that should never change about worship,is that it should always be God centered never self centered.
Todd has been to the fountain of youth 😅 Love Hymns
Worship music (both the words and the music) does not have to be old, but it should be reverent. Yes the words AND the music.
what instrument? the voice.
The throat, in my case
Very critical, as long as we are praising God from our hearts thats all that matters.
Ephesians 5:19-20 ESV
addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
But God hasn't changed,, and I fear he will " change the station" when he hears what is not to his liking!
@jamesbonnema1041 so God doesn't like contemporary worship music just old fashioned hymns? Lol
@@datchet11 God has standards, and He won't lower them for anybody just because their intentions are pure. God specifically stated in Deut. 12. that He is to be worshiped according to _His_ instructions. Contrary to what "Christianity" believes, God _will_ and does ignore worthless worship.
@theeternalsbeliever1779 OK so can you tell me where God said we can't worship with contemporary music only hymns?
@@datchet11In the Pharisees manual maybe?
When this started with my favorite hymn I knew it would be a good video
Whatever instrument is used, it should be the best that instrumentalist has to offer. Preferences are a thing, but, when a congregation is meeting to worship together, there are some things that work better than others. I could easily compose an organ accompaniment that would sound beautiful, but no one could sing with it. An orchestral arrangement with unique chord structures can be very distracting. A well arranged song with drums, guitar, and bass can be used quite effectively to worship our God. Our best for congregational singing is not the same as singing a solo, or singing totally alone in your home.
Sing unto the Lord a NEW SONG
Dan Forrest has gorgeous worship compositions 💖
I am so thankful I finally found a church that understands the point being made here. My church has limited instrumentation (a keyboard or guitar, that's it) and we all sing out of actual printed hymnals! No projection. No rock band. No Hillsong/Bethel/Elevation crap. Just tried and true hymns that have been thoroughly tested for their doctrinal strength. It's like a breath of fresh air compared to the overly emotional, charismatic mush-brain music played at most churches today.
Go read the psalms…
@@-RM- a BIG amen to that!
That is worship music... spot on Todd!
Such a good point
The worship leader is the pastor. You can have a worship service without music. Christ did not walk around Israel with a band following him to hypnotize people.
"The music must not turn the church into an audience enjoying the music but into a congregation singing the Lord's praises in His presence"
-- Jehan Cauvin (John Calvin)
"Christian music is becoming not a Christ-centered thing. The worst thing anybody could possibly say after hearing a Christian song is, 'So what?'"
-- Michael Card
These modern "churches" bring the offering of Cain to God in worship. And turn the lights on when you worship the Father of light!
So, would you dismiss Bach completely?
"Play skillfully with a shout of joy."
Psalm 90:3
Yes a lot of Christian music these days is just carnal emotionalism just like the putting of music in the not so back ground of biblical teachings, its all just carnal cultural entertainment which creates in people a dull numbness of heart there is no seriousness and power in a lot of messages so they feel the need to put dramatic music in the background to manipulate peoples carnal emotions.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(John 1:49, Acts 2:36)
We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18.
Watch the UA-cam videos “The New Covenant” by David Wilkerson, or Bob George, and David H.J. Gay.
Who is andy stanley?
@BasedZoomer He's one of the worst false preachers to ever come out. Todd Friel has multiple videos on this channel about him, but the latest video shows Stanley talking about detaching the Old Testament completely in his church; that somehow it has no relevance to Christians today. He speaks blasphemy and hypocrisy at every turn.
So many hymnals have gone out of existence. Hard to find them.
So many, many cultures throughout the world. So many, many styles and forms of music. To silo worship music into a personal preference and legalistically try to enforce it on to the entire population is completely missing the point of worship from the heart of man.
Homework question: How can grace be demonstrated while singing?
What even is grace anyway?
Grace is biblically defined as God's unmerited favor or mercy. Despite "Christianity" perverting the term to preach lawless gospels about its fake Christ, it does NOT give ppl a license to disregard the Law. The fact that someone cannot earn God's mercy by law-keeping doesn't mean they are above the Law. Nobody is.
2:21 "Goda?"
Doesn’t the Bible say something about singing unto the Lord a new song?
And make a joyful noise?
I'm good with "The Old Rugged Cross", "The Garden", "Just As I Am"
I don't need to be "lofty" in my worship to God, I need to be humble and sincere...
You should be lofty in your worship to the Amazing God who deserves our best.
You're creating an argument where there is none, but okay....
I've played in full bands and small four piece, either one was just as technical. It's true though, I think to myself those lyrics are weak but because of the instruments and key it works. Play skillfully to your best abilities for God.
A lot of Churches today want to turn hymns into hers
So our songs need to be in lofty language, but our bibles need to be dumbed down? This makes no sense.
Different people enjoy different styles of music. I can listen to beautiful old hymns, Southern Gospel, Micheal Card, Skillet, Keith Green, Twila Paris, Petra and Stryper. Their motives are all the same, honor God and draw people to Jesus.
Most hymns we think of as ‘doctrinally sound’ were invented 200 years ago by Methodists and have MAJOR theological issues. Many of our most famous hymns were written by those who later apostated.
Oh wow! I didn't know that.
A remark like that needs to be qualified with concrete evidence

Contemporary christian songs reflect the songwriters theology
As long as the heart is right before the Lord. I too prefer hymns etc but that does not mean all the good music has been written -------- what about: make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
Our inspiration should be the Psalms not Watts
There is such a thing as musical IQ. Most people or writers aren't on the high end.
