Can We Get a High Five? ✋ This is the *FIRST REAL TIME EPISODE* since we started filming for Kombi Life (9 YEARS AGO!) This episode was filmed, edited and published all this week! Time for a happy dance, it was A LOT of work but we finally caught up to real time!! 💃🕺🐕🦺🚍🌎
There is now a BETTER and CHEAPER version of that ACUVA UV water filtration system mentioned in this video. We've been using it for a long time and it is one of our favorite parts of our Off Grid Rig ✌ *KOMBI LIFE VIEWERS get $100 OFF!!!!* bit.ly/VanLifeSafeWater (discount code KOMBILIFE)✌ [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!]
As an Anglo-Belgian I'm going to try and answer your question about languages. The simple answer is it depends where you are in Belgium. For example Bruxelles is officially bilingual and English is widely spoken. If you are in the west of Belgium where it gets close to the French border, Belgians will speak Dutch but will be able to speak French. The Belgian coast is Dutch speaking, yet due to tourism and the fact many French speaking Belgians have property there, both Dutch and French are spoken. Where you travelled through was the area of about 60,000 German speakers and because this region isn't far from Liege or the Dutch speaking region then all three languages can be found. The areas where you are least likely to find multiple languages are the north east of Belgium where Dutch is only spoken and there is little knowledge of French, and likewise the E42 corridor from Mons through to Liege and south of that only French is spoken. In general, educated Flemings speak Dutch, French, German and English to a good level, and educated Walloons will speak French and Dutch and maybe some English. In general, the ability of the Dutch speakers to be bilingual is higher than the ability of the French speakers. This is often a very sore point between the two communities. The final comment: many communes traverse linguistic borders yet, one language will be designated as official. A few communes give second language rights but it is rare. Again these communes are a sore point of contention politically.
Greetings from Hoegaarden (you may know the beer). I live in the dutch part, near the language border. Fun fact: my school is located right on the border!!
Nice to see Leah driving,as usually it's Ben doing the driving in the videos. I like that you have matching masks, very sweet,my hubby just wears those generic blue hospitaly looking ones,I wear my trusty motorbike scarf as it serves me well. Liking your new plants hope they do well, better than the lavender,I'm afraid I've forgotten the name you gave her. Alaska's little face when you left to go shopping, such a sweetie. Enjoying your videos and a safe journey to you all.
Y'all rock. I look forward to your updates every week. Y'all keep inspiring me, and since I've lived on the road in my van, Sunday's are inspiration day. Peace and wander on 🌎🚐✌🤞🤙🏻👍
Love the “$1000 hammer fix” on the starter motor - that takes me back to my earliest driving years in the 1970’s. Why $1000 you ask: cost of hammer - $10, cost of mechanic (or reward for Ben) for hitting it - $40, cost of knowing what/where/how hard to hit $950.... or absolutely priceless during a pandemic when you can’t find a garage that’s open. Stay safe, I’m really enjoying the journey so far.
Amazing trip. I had to pospone my 2020 jorneys to NZ, UK and Europe from Sudamerica. I used to visit UK and Cologne every year. Now i am enjoying your journey on youtube. I love your idea of enjoy the journey celebrating every spot on the way. 😊 Greetings from Chile.
Ben, clean the ground connection on your battery on both ends. By this I mean remove it (unbolt it from where it connects to the body) and clean it until it is shiny and the steel of the body is free of corrosion, paint etc. and shiny as well. Make sure there is as much surface area as possible touching between the two. This is the most neglected connection in any Bus/Transporters/Kombi. Your solenoid is not getting enough current to overcome stickiness of grease and dirt build up etc. this might save you some crawls. Also, on the next major service, pull your solenoid apart and detail clean it. Some would say to lube it, I will leave that to you. If it operates smoothly without lube, I tend not to lube it because lube attracts dust and eventually gums things up. Again, your call. Best of luck to both of you! Love your hob/sink combo!
Holy fark guys your video editing in this episode is crazy kool, on another level stuff, dang man you really make it look super duper awesome to van life, seen alot of other van life vids on UA-cam and they ain’t got nothing on you guys, I can definitely resonate with you fullas, ya come off as absolutely genuine team, oh well looking forward to the next episode take care
Well, this was just a super episode! The “real time” factor was a plus. It’s great to see your cute, functional little kitchen in use on the UA-cams. Your film editing, in general, is superb, but on the cooking segment it was totally delightful. I tend to take little Miss Alaska for granted, but she is a very sweet little gal. I enjoyed seeing your arrival to Germany. It is actually poignant to see Boomerang returning to where she was born, so to speak. The cemetery water point is bonus information. We really really really want to come over to Europe next year and van life around. We’ll definitely purchase your Complete Guide To Van Life when we do. Epic closing shot, as well. You really know how to end it on a high note. Cheers
7:11 😂🤣😂 LMFAO!!!!! ...... * (says in french accent) * 👉 " A few little taps with my best friend " 😂 " and we are back on the road no " 😂 🔨 ..... laughed hard at that!!!!! lol
Hi Ben and Leah - great to see you on the road again - High 🖐for the realtime. What's the plan which way are you heading - Keep safe and sending you both virtual hugs - Chris & Marianne x
So glad you guys have been able to get back on the road. Congrats on the real time catchup, that is hard to do. Hoping you guys are able to stay healthy on the road! Hoping it won't be too long before American's are allowed back in to Europe.
"You know that this spot right here is a hotspot?" 2 seconds later.. "So, yeh we're going to be doing our best to stay away from any kind of hotspots" xD
love to see you all enjoying your adventures! Although I think you're pretty optimistic to hit the road so quickly, back onto the continent. Best of luck & stay well!
I recall a conversation you had with your mum, whilst sitting in the van under the shade of giant redwood trees in California..... She was saying something along the lines that she would be more cautious then venturing off across the globe in a van.... Now, we should all take much more notice of advice given by our parents... I noticed you pointed out to us all about the safety aspect of eating in the van, and yet, just a few clips before, you are sitting in a crowed bar in Germany with little concerns regarding Corvid... A very successful YT'er with millions of followers, and whom is very famous for his extreme tourism videos... Bald & Bankrupt.... Went off visiting old Soviet countries without concerns, thinking he was too young to be vulnerable to Covid.... Well, he was so sick he was in intensive care for quite a time, and watched two others in the same unit pass away.... He admits, he didn't take the threat to his health seriously..... Check his channel out, its one of the best on here... Cheers. His own video he has decided to remove, but here is another YT video describing his situation... ua-cam.com/video/3Cs-8i_AoVQ/v-deo.html
Yep they really don't care at all. A lot of virtue signalling really. Baffling that they couldn't just wait it out in the safety of their homes until this is all over but instead decided to keep travelling across Europe with the possibility of contracting it and potentially spreading it as they go. I am from the UK originally and live in Brazil now, and when I see people posting videos and pictures of themselves at pubs and busy public places with no masks or willingness to even wear one, it saddens me. It's even worse in Brazil, a lot of people with this attitude
great food for Leah, loved the camera tricks with food, and the tip about cemetery water(newby)! I did feel like rushing thru countries was no fun and you ended speaking to that...please, slow down! It is all about the journey.
Hey guys, been following your adevntures for quite a while now and am stoked today to see that you made a move to germany. And glad you like it here. Cheers from around the corner of the eifel - cologne area. Enjoy your time here and your next adventures.
Really nice to see you are back on the road! And you went right past our region. If you ever have more time to explore visit "Heuvelland" the only region in the Netherlands with actual hills. :) Be safe and good travels!!!
I am from Regensburg. Always worth a visit. And like some others here in the comments, i would offer to show you the city and a nice campspot. 😉 Enjoy the country
Dude I live in India ,we have 22official languages and 1000 unofficial one but we have the second largest no of English speaking people ( that's because India has more than 1400 million people) so free feel to come here .caution : you may not be able to take showers in public
If you plan visit Poland, you're more than welcome to, especially in Torun or round the city ;) There could be nice spot for your Kombi around the city!
Spent years trying to figure out where my grandmother's parents came from. They and my grandmother spoke fluent German, so German right? When the DNA came back, they were French. From the Alsace Lorraine area. Finally found them in the books so to speak.
People that live in Wallonia don’t really learn Flemish anymore. Only in some schools it gets learned, however flemish people strictly have to learn french so I would say people crossing borders would most likely speak french. Ps: how badly I would have liked you to visit my home town Tessenderlo.😔 But it’s ok. You guys obviously can’t stay in Belgium long enough and good luck with the rest of your journey.
Awesome video. However... you made it to Belgium, which is great of course. But you skipped Bruges aka 'Venice of the North'. Did you forget I mentioned earlier that we have the best beer in the world ! But also chocolate and wafles... Architecture, art, mid-eviel scenery and so on... too bad you've missed it. There's one solution to this... turn back ;-) Happy and safe travels !
Info about belgium: On the flemish / wallonia borders we try to speak each other languages and when that doens't work its just in English. Water you find on the sementairy or on taps free for public are always top quality and very save to drink, otherwise there will be a sign that tells you not for drinking. Beautiful locations in belgium; Haspengouw, around Borgloon ( the agriculture and fruit grown regions ), the ' Ardennen ' the wood and mountain regions All the way from Liege until Luxembourg. Beautiful aged city's are: Bruges, Gent, Namen,... Also if passing belgium, just pas by the smallest country in Europe right under belgium; luxembourg , gas, alcohol and food are very cheap over there. And a nice camping tip is on a 3 country split in the small town Ouren, there is a camping down in the valley where u can spot firefly's in the summer, its really nice there. Cheers from Belgium, ps if your ever stuck in belgium or having vw problems you can always contact me to help you guys out! :-)
People in the language border regions usually speak the different languages, because they run into each other all the time and because in school we have to learn the three official Belgian languages (flemish - french - german) People who live far from the language borders usually have more problems because of a lack of practice of speaking the other languages...I live in the north near the border with the netherlands for instance, so my french and my german are not that good anymore as when I learned it in school, just because I rarely speak it.... How is it in the Channel islands by the way : I know Jersey is part of the UK and people speak English, but you are so close to France...do people from Jersey speak french at all ?
Tips for belgium : Durbuy , Brugge , perheaps Diksmuide with a beautifull market square authentic buildings be aware in belgium in many cities youre obligated to were masks everywhere.
Thanks guys for sharing $100 off water system just ordered mine for Sprinter van unfortunately we're in stage 4 Lockdown in Victoria Melbourne safe travels
If you plan on travelling through Germany and would like to get a tour of Erfurt feel free to contact me. I would love to meet you three. Germany has a lot of cool places and stunning nature. Enjoy. Cheers Steffen
If you are going to pass through Hungary - go along the west shore of Lake Balaton to Keszthely & the natural thermal lake in Heviz (190 km SW of Budapest), I also recommend the small city of Eger (130km NW of Budapest) its Hungary's 'mini Vienna', Eger Castle and near Hungary's highest mountains & home to the only Camera Obscura outside of Edinburgh and Pecs - Pronouched 'Pitch' (210 km S of Budapest) - for the wineries, the city has nice old town walls and quite a bit of Turkish influence in architecture. A little north of Budapest (45 km) is Visegradi (Castle) Fellegvar a fortress castle on a hill guarding the Danube - halfway is Szentandre for its Serbian cuisine and Orthodox churches and of course, there is Budapest. Quick lingo - Cheers = Egerszsegere (Egersz for short, something similar used for bless you), please=kerlek, thank you= Koszonom Hello=Szia (See O), goodbye = Viszlat/ Bucsu - rough guess-been a while since I lived in Hungary (sz roughly pronounced as 'Zzz') As for Germany - try stopping by at Koblenz on the Rhine, Nuremberg or the Elbe valley if your heading for the Czech Republic (see Honest guide youtube channel for info on Prague & other places in CZ) (you've probably practised some of this lingo already) Quick lingo Cheers = Prost, please=bitte, thank you = Danke, Hello=Hallo, see you/goodbye = Bis Bald/Tschuss (Tussch)

You guys work so hard! WAY TO GO!
Did you guys go back to jersey afterwards?
✋
9 Years?!! 👏👏👏
Kombi Life So it was you who started Covid19, for having enough editing time due to the Lockdown?
I started watching 3years ago because you have a vw bus . but now i watch for leah, she's one of a kind.
The bit about fixing the starter with a few taps from the hammer, in a cheesy French accent, deserves a thumbs up all by itself.
There is now a BETTER and CHEAPER version of that ACUVA UV water filtration system mentioned in this video.
We've been using it for a long time and it is one of our favorite parts of our Off Grid Rig

Of all the UA-camrs I follow, you guys have the best music by far!! Take care guys!
Yes ! Music may be a small part of it all, but it does matter.
"It's amazing that how many more sunsets you see when you stay outside rather than staying inside"that's a good quoate

As a Flemish Belgian myself I'd say that it's quite an accurate description yes!
Jon Bryant As an American I truly take for granted that I can travel thousands of miles in the USA and not have language barriers to deal with.
Greetings from Hoegaarden (you may know the beer). I live in the dutch part, near the language border. Fun fact: my school is located right on the border!!
and although i live so close i rarely get in contact with french
Yess, finally you visit my home country germany
Ben, a trick: if you turn your knife upside down when scraping vegetables of the cutting board, it will last longer.
Please, a good knife and a professional sharpener every so often, you're good.
As usual wonderful storytelling ....so glad you guys are making the most of what is a pretty messed up situation ... safe travels as always ..

Luv it. Hammer is definitely the right tool for a starter.
You need a folding eating table in your van , also can be used for computers etc.
I have not been able to watch this for ages because we went campervaning see why you guys love to live like this.
I thought no one was watching the video but later I realised that I was very early 😂😂

It's cool, just after 2 days in France, you are repairing like us :-)
You're always welcome back in Belgium! 😁😁 We have a lot more for you go visit! 😁
You picked up an ornamental pepper plant, not a cayenne pepper plant. You can eat them, but people rarely do and you most likely will not like them.
You should go to Wolfsburg and do a factory tour (assuming they are running them).
Bonus points if anyone can spot what we left behind? 🧐
Surf board
kneeling pad oops
the board at 7:18 ?
That skate board under the van at 5:00
a matching black and white checkered shirt for Leah to go with those masky masks.
drone view shows you left your pad of some sort on the ground when you drove off.
Love the editing, well done!

love to see you all enjoying your adventures! Although I think you're pretty optimistic to hit the road so quickly, back onto the continent. Best of luck & stay well!

Loved the squash dish. Garlic? Pasta? Something else? Others were easily identified. Recipe? US cemeteries don't always have water taps, sadly.
You left your knee pad where you persuaded your starter to work again. Ran over it..
Great episode guys. Nice aerial footage! Enjoy Germany.

People in the language border regions usually speak the different languages, because they run into each other all the time and because in school we have to learn the three official Belgian languages (flemish - french - german)
People who live far from the language borders usually have more problems because of a lack of practice of speaking the other languages...I live in the north near the border with the netherlands for instance, so my french and my german are not that good anymore as when I learned it in school, just because I rarely speak it....

If you plan on travelling through Germany and would like to get a tour of Erfurt feel free to contact me. I would love to meet you three.
Germany has a lot of cool places and stunning nature. Enjoy.
Cheers Steffen
If you should be traveling through the Wendland in Germany I could offer you a place to stay at. Safe travels!

FYI - Here in Michigan our gas prices range between $1.80 & $2.10 a gallon At one point gas was down to $1.40 a gallon.
Wow that’s so cheap right now. It’s almost 4X more in parts of Europe.
So jealous...can’t even leave my state cuz I’ll have to quarantine on return! Need to see my 🇨🇦 family!
Me and my family visited the Eifel 2 week’s ago
Flamish is like Dutch from NederlanLand, you can find this language in Utah "mormon" or "amish" and South Africa, for example.
Every time you camp by water I just think "oh, cool, mosquitoes"
Quick lingo - Cheers = Egerszsegere (Egersz for short, something similar used for bless you), please=kerlek, thank you= Koszonom Hello=Szia (See O), goodbye = Viszlat/ Bucsu - rough guess-been a while since I lived in Hungary (sz roughly pronounced as 'Zzz')
As for Germany - try stopping by at Koblenz on the Rhine, Nuremberg or the Elbe valley if your heading for the Czech Republic (see Honest guide youtube channel for info on Prague & other places in CZ)
(you've probably practised some of this lingo already)
Quick lingo Cheers = Prost, please=bitte, thank you = Danke, Hello=Hallo, see you/goodbye = Bis Bald/Tschuss (Tussch)
