For those who don't watch Critical Role. In the final moments of his character in that show, we saw Zerxus choosing to go to the hells and trying to reedemm Asmodeus, because he believed that anyone could be reedmeed. Now with this episode we know that not only he failed his quest, but he got corrupted and became the thing he was trying to fight against.

Zerxus' story about the Calamity comes directly from an actual show. There's a 4-part D&D game where the same guy plays as him in the final hours of the Age of Arcanum.
It really was a whole 'nother world back then. Cities were flying all over the place the gods walked among the people, there were 5 continents, and the Betrayer (evil) gods had no power.
As Zerxus said Hell has its rules so while he and Pike made a bargain he never said anything about sending someone after them afterwards so he technically kept his word
My question would've been "Of the 5 cards in your hand, if you label them alphabetically A, B, C, D and E from YOUR left to YOUR right, which label would the Black Skull card have?"
It's actually a lore bit that the more planes of existence a cleric is from their god the weaker they get (going down one or two levels), and the closer they get the stronger they get (because there's less in the way between them and the source of their power).
"No! She is in hell for a reason!" Not to be another comment about EXU calamity, but having Pike instinctively trying to save those who are probably damned for a reason is a fantastic choice for an episode that centers Zerxus. The kindness/hubris of divine healers. Love it!
That it is and honestly I love how they’re fleshing it out a lot more because I’m sure if it stayed closer to the Campaign timeline people might get confused. The scene between Pike and Zerxus is my favorite scene of this whole show so far, and that is *really* saying something. And it wasn’t even in the campaign! It’s new for the show, and pulls from Critical Role’s EXU Calamity, maybe the dopest live play D&D game of all time. It’s relatively short (only 4 episodes, though they’re each long, like all episodes of D&D live play are) and easy to get into, and you can see the story Zerxus talks about in his monologue here. Suuuuper dope.
