Hey kids! On Weekend Wankshop 142, Uncle Ben hears your cries and answers a question i've been asked dozens of times the past several weeks: How do you play that dang riff before the solo in Frayed Ends of Sanity by Metallica?!?!?!
I see this bridge section played and tabbed incorrectly ALL the time! Its not easy to hear, but after prowling through live and demo versions of this Justice For All classic, i've come up with what i think is the 100% accurate way that James and Kirk throw this sick riff down.
This one is great to use to improve your gallops and down picking. Really killer stuff! Let me know other classic metallica riffs you've never been able to figure out and i'll make videos on them too!
Playing my Ibanez RG3120TW with Suhr Aldrich pickups through my Kemper Profiler. Thanks for watching!
In opinion, one of James's greatest riffs. So underrated.
He has so many great riffs and none of them have never been underrated.
James Hetfield is the riff master. Period.
James is a REALLY fucking awesome player...super underrated
underrated?
Some people don't know what the word underrated means, he's widely credited as one of the best metal guitarists of all time.
Fuck yeah he's the fucking down picking riff writing king!
underrated?! naaah, he is the best rythm guitar on the metal scene since ride the ligthing came out
Man, play the riff AFTER this! The one under the solo is NUTS, which you can hear on that demo too.
Yeah, that's a bonkers riff.
When he said "you know the riff" THAT is the riff I was thinking of
It took 4 years, but you got your wish sir!
Finally somebody who plays Metallica PROPERLY ;) yes
I do 🙄
I'm actually just as interested in James's rhythm section during Kirk's solo.
This one helped me: ua-cam.com/video/euNaoMCEUZQ/v-deo.html :) Maybe you as well?
The drum fill right before this riff is probably one of my favorite fills ever. I have no idea why, I just love it.
The only fill that Lars did not play with his track....he had to add it on a separate track lol he was good but not good enough
afterforever71 lars does it live easily tho
@@oldmatevb are you serious! They've only played it live a handful of times and every time that fill comes up, he fumbles like a beginner. Don't get me wrong Lars inspired me to play drums at 2 years old. Just saying.
@@afterforever71 Idk what you mean he USUALLY plays it almost perfect live... well ok except for that one time... you all know what I mean
Ah, feels great to see someone playing my riff accurately :D
Nice pfp bro! RIP CHUCK!
Sounds pretty fuckin accurate to me, good job figuring it out dude!
metfan4l love your vids \m/
That's my favorite riff on that album and that's saying something! Thank you Ben
Black Sabbath his version is very wrong. Listen to the slowed down version ua-cam.com/video/KzSEGr8Z5Qw/v-deo.html
Metallica is playing B to B flat and the riff on the A string is wrong as well.
Apparently they felt …and justice for all was too complex and thus taxing to play live. It's a shame as (despite the mix of the album) together with master of puppets it's by far the best Metallica.
John Gustafsson Not so sure. I've heard James in particular tries to avoid playing lots of long songs so they can play as much material live as possible.
Metallica has not written anything that is too hard to play live lol
Matt Cooke Looked into it a bit more and it seems to be a combo of long songs (Kirk apparently said "we're not playing that again" at some point) and songs just drenched in different riffs and progressive oddities. Lars might even have some issues with keeping up with all of it.
I assume that if they really want to they can play them, but it's kind of a pain ("hard") and the black album seems to be a reaction to this, as well as those next two "country metal" albums as I like to call them. Gone are what made …and justice for all great.
John Gustafsson RIDE THE FUCKING LIGHTNING>>>all
Are you referring to the song or the album? The song IS too long! It has some great riffs but is super repetitive and gets pretty boring to listen to. They play other songs from Justice live all the time.
"You know which riff I'm talking about" lol yes we do
I LOVE this riff. Justice has such amazing rhythms and this one is probably my fav
Can you do Dyers Eve. Please!! I swear to God it's not 2-3-2-3!! It's 2-2-2-2
Dao Yang it sounds good either way, just 3-2 is more challenging.
It’s 2-2-2-2 ....also Lambchopper did it in his cover. He’s Cover are the most accurate on UA-cam!
It’s 2-2-2-2
i always thought of lambcopper as the guy who can play but plays riffs wrong or simplifies riffs to make it easier. idk. he might be accurate on that dyers eve but he definetely plays some riffs and solos wrong
Kirk confirmed it is 2
You're the only guitar player on the whole internet whose Metallica riff versions match the recordings, time and time again. Nobody is playing these riffs the right way (to my ears, who could be wrong of course).
Seriously Ben, you're a lifesaver! So many thanks for all your work!
Man I have been *NEEDING* this, can't believe I didn't know Uncle Ben had a wankshop of it up for two friggin years.
I agree with some of the comments here that its actually 7-6 pull off on the E string rather than 6-5. 7-6 also matches what JH is playing under the solo at 4:24 to 4:29 on the song, and you can here this clearly by listening to the "Frayed Ends of Sanity Instrumental Rough Mix - no solo" listen to 4:24 to 4:28 which is also on youtube. But, much thanks to Uncle Ben for the video, love your work and have learnt so much.
I didn't notice Ben played this part wrong, but yeah it's 7-6 on the E. I'm positive.
Yess, thank you uncle Ben.
Ben really is the best type of guitar teacher, there’s so many tossers who over complicate things for u just so u can hear them talk about how much theory they know n go on n on about til sig changes that Metallica probably didn’t even deliberately write. Ben just shows u and explains how simple it really is. Every guitarist who waste these time on all them wankers with 1-2mil subs where they take a riff like this n turn it into a 30minutes theory lesson that true writers them selves weren’t even worried about r wasting there time. Bens lessons r a shredding hack, straight to the point, get the technique in ur arsenal, n u slowly just accidentally start taking in theory while mastering all ur favourite techniques broken down n shown how simple they really are when approached correctly. Ben Ellet n.1 guitar teacher on UA-cam without a doubt.
So simple, so badass! 🤘
That's a cool jam. Thanks for the upload.
thank you uncle ben !!!!
Sick was literally trying to learn this this week. The tabs make it way harder with a weird lick alternating between the 6th and 7th frets of the E and the A instead of just the gallops on the open A! Thanks Uncle B!
The best riff is the solo riff. I heard the rough draft version recently. Stunning as I wish that was a majority riff
I feel like you really do know my struggles as a guitarist
Love that guitar
Great tone!!
Do the solo riff also
Yeah, that's more difficult
It's impossible to hear and the tabs suck so hard.
@@timonsteup2877 Listen to the the AJFA deluxe track of it titled (The Frayed End of Sanity Work in Progress Rough Mix) the solo isn't there so it's pretty clear.
ua-cam.com/video/euNaoMCEUZQ/v-deo.html :)
Loving the shirt dude.
This is my favorite riff off of AJFA and I’ve had the Tab book for 30 years and knew that shit was wrong!! Thanks for clearing it up for me!!!!
I love this riff
Nicely done.
In the Justice box set there's a version of most of the songs without Kirk on them but Jason can be heard. With the bass it's truly a fire breathing tone - if you thought it was heavy then be prepared to be shocked. Hetfields rendition of this and the crushing rhythm that's under the solo is just monstrous. Personally, I prefer the versions where you can hear Jason but not Kirk and Papa Het's rhythm is more interesting than the leads.
I was pretty close. I never thought of using the A string for that second pull off part back in the day when I figured it out, and now I can hear it for real
Your videos make me better at guitar!
As some other posters have mentioned, the rhythm under the solo right after this would be great to learn too!
Still chills from this album
thank you thank . Ive wanted to learn this
Hey bro, do Megadeth's Angry Again. In particular the guitar part being played during the chorus.
beautiful guitar my dude
Indeed good sir
Sweet looking guitar dude!
Nice tone!
Kirks solo on this is one of my faves…aggressive full send 🤘🏼
Fantastic job! I'd really like to see a part II where you cover the rhythm part behind the solo. IMO, it's the most complicated stuff Hetfield has ever come up with, along with the solo rhythm for Dyer's Eve.
That guitar is awesome. I wish I bought one years ago. Liked the red one
Play the even more DANG riff after the solo, before the last verse
Love these fucking videos Uncle Ben. Keep up the grrrreat work.
Hi Ben would love to see this for Dyers Eve for the main riff after the intro. Your videos are so helpful, thanks for being awesome and sharing it!
i lost my shit when they played this live at leeds festival uk....the first time in uk....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhhhhyou man...are a fukkin savage
THE SECOND DAMAGE INC. RIFF, OR THE DYERS EVE SECOND RIFF
Thank you so much for this lesson video! Finally can understand/hear what James Hetfield after all this time! Lol
"whenever they play it live...." I've been waiting for years to hear them play this one live 🙁
It's pretty likely that the demo was pitched up due to the band wanting a tempo increase and speeding it up as a practice template of sorts, or maybe some other artifact of tape demo recording. I doubt they tuned up for the purpose. More likely to push the speed over the edge a bit, and give them a target.
Dude, that's so badass xD
Ben. Fantastic. Your ear is great for this. Im working my way through AJFA to cut my teeth (Rhythm only) and this is very helpful. have a well deserved beer!
This is the best part of the song!
YES!!! THANK YOU, Uncle Ben!! I can't possibly give enough likes to this video. Would you ever consider doing the main riff to Poison Was the Cure, or the note-y bridge/breakdown riff in Angel of Death? Those two are long overdue for the true Uncle Ben treatment. Please and thank you once again!
My question is.. How the f... were they able to write this brilliant stuff while being wasted of their rockers?
Marbash drugs and liquor are awesome and fuel creativity.
They probably didn't actually write it first, they probably played what sounded good to them, and it just so happened to work out brilliantly... Although, Cliff Burton was quite talented, and had an influence on how Metallica wrote music... this probably still influenced how they wrote music after he died.
What horseshit.
I've come up with some badass metal riffs by taking really big bong hits!! Lmfao!
What's horse shit?
If you're bored and taking requests, the riff sequence right after this one would be much appreciated!!!
This fuckin riff... Awesome stuff!
every time when there is a metallica lesson I get excited...myb should also do the solo of this song?
It would be cool if you did a lesson on the riff in Damage Inc that starts around 3:14 (before the solo)
EDIT: Or the intro riff to Megadeth - Liar. That riff is weird man...
Cheers from Norway dude, awesome channel!
Love your riff breakdowns, thanks for all of them. Any chance we can have the correct way to play wrathchild and thin lizzy cold sweat? 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great detective work Ben. Also sick tone. Is that an AJFA profile?
one of the most underrated metallica songs
Honestly the riff under the solo is even harder, top 5 hardest Metallica riffs
I'm sure someone here's already mentioned it, but a tutorial on the rhythm under the guitar solo would be fantastic. Haven't looked at the tabs, but I'm sure they're wrong, and that riff is ridiculously awesome. You can here it in all of it's isolated wonderfulness on the version 3 demo.
I did know the riff you were talking about. I love it. It's like your stepmom saw into my soul and told you my secrets lol. Awesome. I'm 44 so And Justice was to me the last great Metallica album. The new one however has got my attention :D Whhekend Whhankshop. Nice emphasis on the H, Stewie.
Damage inc riff around the solo is so difficult, and i think much harder! Have you done that one?
I'm sure you hear this all the time but that Ibanez 3120 is one sweet guitar!
Hi Ben! Am a big fan of your channel. I noticed you did the take no prisoners intro lesson but how about the hardest parts of the songs like the parts from the 2.00 minutes mark toward the end
A lot of the Metallica songs are in that position. From this to the load albums & the new songs, yet they still make each song in the same position so unique.
I'd like to see a video of the break at 5:30ish on All Nightmare Long. Love that one.
You are our leader! Live In a Hole? Or By Demos be Driven? Verse riff for either of them? I can at least ask lol. Thanks for the great video!
If you ever want to do some bass, please try to do Gojira-04. It's an amazing bass song and I'd really like to learn it thanks to uncle ben
Tbh I don't know how anyone in the band plays this live if they're all pushing 55. Also, I love how he says "you know which one I'm talking about" when we actually know the one he's talking about
El riff verdaderamente importante es el que sigue, y que sostiene todo el solo.
Live In a Hole (vulgar display of power) verse riff, please?
Or
By demons be driven (verse riff), please?
Your doing great things on here Ben!
Fucking awesome dude
Sad but true chorus riff! I find it kinda confusing with timing and ive read others with the same problem. Rock on \m/
You should do the other riff under the solo. It’s crazy
Noticed you are mainly an Ibanez guy; you ever try the Music Man JP6s? Tried one and it was awesome and some of your wankshop licks sounded killer on it.
I think doing all AJFA could be a weekend wankshop. Getting all those details
I admit only reason I clicked it was for the RG3120 popping on my feed.
Uncle Ben, I'd like to know if you could show us how to set a proper tone for solos and licks, I been struggling for a while busting my ass trying Bias FX, pedals, various softwares and whatnot but my tone never ceases to suck major butt. Thanks and keep up the good work.
That's the best metal riff of all time in my opinion ! Raining blood is second.
There wasn't a enough of this riff if you ask me. Maybe it was a throw away riff for them at the time, but it is Hetfield gold!!!
can you do that fast riff from Sweet Amber? cant figure that one out at all
Would be awesome for you to figure out the intro to Rust in Peace... Polaris by Megadeth!
lol I just realized you played the last pull-off hammer on in Step Dad speed in a different position. 2:02 Typical Step Dad!
Have you done a video on Seventeen by Winger? I have trouble with the intro.
Looks like an easy riff to figure out for me!
Hey Ben, could you do a lesson for the intro riff of "Killing is my business ... and business is good "?
The riffs in that song are so hard to figure out.
I thought you were talking about the riff at 3 mins 21 in the song. The one before this riff
can u do a Vid tutorial of that last run in the CRAZY TRAIN solo?!?!
Could you do a part 2 of Damage inc including the middle section with the weird gallops? At the 3:15 in to the song.
great stuff, can you do the first solo of the conjuring (megadeth) please? i hear 2 guitars overlaping in the original recording, it's really weird.
Can we get a lesson for Racer X's 'Gone too far?' That intro riff is immense.
Where did you get the 3120? Always wanted one of those!
Ben, you should see what's going on with that riff before the first two verses of one start. The tab book seems to be quite different from how they play it live. Haven't ever been able to make it sound quite right.🤘
Tab books are EVIL
Thanks very muich for that, I wonder if you could work out the quick hammer on/pull off riff from near the end of Bad Omen by Megadeth that starts at 3:35. I know it's tuned quarter step down and I'm playing E standard so it will sound a bit off anyway, but watching live vids from 86 & 87 it seems Dave plays in the 5th position, but i can't seem to work it out 100%
jiantjingerjohn Don't know if you already got it but I think it is 7-5 on the D string the first time and then 5-7-8-7 the second time (I play it on the A string though)
