yup I have a 1st gen Roku and 2 new Ultras. My old one still works but many of the apps and services will no longer be supported and updated on the old OS/device so.... may need to upgrade eventually
Yup. But its a pain that I can't use Bluetooth on my 1st gen Ultra.
I have a 2019 Roku ultra and watching this video there isn’t anything earthshaking going on here to make me want to buy the 2020 version. I also have a gripe with the remote, I wish they would’ve updated the remote to put the volume and mute buttons on the top with all the rest of the buttons instead of on the side.
My thoughts exactly. I still use my Roku 4 the predecessor to the Roku Ultra and came out around 2016 give or take. It still updates and works good for streaming. So I'll wait until the updates stop and maybe will get even more features by then that will benefit me besides just streaming.
Yeah the volume buttons on the side is annoying. I hit the mute button all the time by accident

Hey Phillip! love your info. I really need a lighted remote. ROKU is used in bedrooms at night. A lighted remote should be available.
The nvidia Shield is more powerful and the remote lights up even simply when it is moved.
Great info.. But you should work on your on screens personality... It sounds like you're a robot reading a script and
might want to look into an All In One Programmable remote like the Logitech ones. to combine a bucnh of remotes into one and have them do macros for your so your significant other can easily do the "remote tap dance" :) and not get frustrated

I’ve been using Roku since 2013 and I rarely look at the remote. It’s a simple remote with few buttons so I can easily feel it.

I haven't updated any of my streaming devices in a few years. But with the better hardware and dolby atmos capabilities I think it might be time to invest in this 2020 roku ultra. I'll wait till Black Friday/Cyber Monday to do so though ;).
The removal of the micro SD slot for me is a deal breaker. Let me decide if I need additional storage. I am not going to replace my unit a year or two from now because I ran out of storage and am forced to buy a new unit with increased storage. The only purpose for eliminating that slot is to build in future need to upgrade, a tactic I consider unethical.

This was a very nice review. Prefer the older 2019, Roku Ultra model for my set-up because my primary TV is just, a Panasonic Plasma with max picture quality at 1080p. However, for most people, I recommend the Roku Ultra LT model (which, is only sold for retail at Walmart) over the Roku Ultra because they are almost the same but, it sells for $20 less ($79 verses $99). Several months ago, I needed to add a Roku to my bedroom TV and installed the Ultra LT which, has been working great.
They STILL have the sound controls on the side which is my only gripe about the remote.
Half the time when you pick it up you hit the MUTE button.
I have the 2019 Ultra and wear XL size gloves. I hold the remote in my palm just left of thumb pad (right hand). This puts my thumb on the side to where if I bent my thumb, the tip would press the mute button. With muscle memory accidently pressing the volume control buttons hasn't been an issue.
A couple of questions;
1) Which is better, a stand alone ROKU box or a 4K ROKU TV?
2) Which provides better performance, a WiFi connection to the router or an Ethernet connection to the router.
3) I have a secondary TV, an older Samsung 40" LED TV with HDMI input which is not Smart or WiFi enabled. Does adding a ROKU box
make it a "Smart ROKU TV"?

This is the best review of the new Roku Ultra that I've seen. I buy the new Ultra every year. Also got the new Chromecast just to compare the two...knew I'd still prefer the Roku. This review is great info for people new to Roku's top device.
Why do you buy it every year? Does it stop working eventually? I'm just asking because I'm thinking about buying one
@@kimberlytaylor3344 I buy it every year because I'm a big fan and I give the previous year's model to friends. If you stream a lot, the Roku Ultra is the way to go
@@kimberlytaylor3344 I have a 10 year old Roku 3, a 5 year old Premier and a new Ultra. All are still in use in various rooms and they all work great. I don't think there are many quality issues with Roku boxes.

Roku needs an internet browser. It would not have to be a full function browser, just
enough to program say 10 of your favorite websites. That way you would not have
to switch devices to check your email or bank account or maybe make a few
purchases.
I have the older Ultra in my bedroom. (Liked the private listening feature. Its faster than my streaming stick in my Living room. ☺
One problem I have with the 2019 Ultra is that every time that I want to use the USB drive is I have to pull out the USB drive and stick it back in before the Roku will see the drive. It would be nice if I could just use the remote and go to the USB drive when I want to access the USB drive.

I just installed the new 2020 Roku Ultra (Model 4800X, SW Ver 9.3.1 Build 4240-C2). Unfortunately, it has some problems with Dolby Vision which make it unusable for me. I submitted a support request to Roku with the following: "Dolby Vision stays on all the time making non-Dolby Vision content to bright. Dolby Vision content flashes white spots in black areas along with making a ticking noise once every second. Selecting "4K TV" instead of "4K HDR TV" will not switch to HDR mode automatically for HDR content like the previous Model 4670X did which supported HDR10."
Is there a reason you didn't list the amount of onboard storage - particularly considering that Roku dropped the micro SD card slot?
Yeah, yeah, Roku says they increased onboard storage making a card slot unnecessary, but is that true? How many apps can the 2020 Ultra store without the Ultra offloading and then downloading apps as needed?
Your right without the SD card slot useless to me. My Roku Ultra 2019 is great & I have so many apps without the card it would take forever to go from to another 😉

You'll have to forgive my ignorance, I'm still running old Roku 3's, but would the device not store apps onto a USB thumbdrive if one was plugged in?
@@DavidWalling as far as I know there are no Roku devices that store apps on USB. only audio and video files in formats Roku recognized.

Is the remote finder button gone? You don't mention it AT ALL and I consider it one of the best features.
I think it is. I saw in on the roku site. the locator button in on the side. Yeah, this is a huge one for me. It looks like they added a mute button as well on the remote. NOT on the 2019 version.
I had problems with my 2019 Ultra. Freezing and randomly restarting! On the Roku forums, others had the same problems and I believe they were related to the Roku running too hot. I was able to get Roku to replace my unit under warranty, but I sold it unopened and bought the Roku 4k streaming stick. This device works like a charm. Sadly the reviewer didn't mention the overheating issue with the 2019 model, or if the 2020 model corrected the issue.

Roku TV is a life changer, I really enjoy watching TV in my roku stick also the Amazon fire stick is great.

Keep in mind..Some apps such as Paramount+ will only do 4K HDR or Dolby Vision on the 2020 model and not on the older models. Also new for 2021, HDR 10+ will roll out only to the 2020 Roku models.
I use mine to make grilled cheese sandwiches on ,works better than my griddle and half the time ! Come on Roku put some air vents and a heat sink in the next gen. !

The 2019 model is like $90 or $95 so for a couple of extra bucks I would rather get the latest model so I ordered it directly from ROKU and just received notification that it shipped

I am going to have to say no to this 2020 version. I have the 2019 version and I just checked the specs on this one at the Roku website and found that they still have not upgraded the ethernet to gigabit, it is still 10/100. I will stay with my nVidia Shield boxes that have been gigabit for many years. When I compare the two brands (My Rokus are all ultra's), I consistently find that my nVidia's lode content much faster and I don't have any buffering unlike my Ultra's that have those problems consistently. I was really hoping for this upgrade since I have been a fan of Roku for many years. This is a real disappointment.
I preordered this 2020 Ultra version. I have the 2013 version that streams in glorious 360i with 1.0 mono audio channel
Still, 100mbps is more than enough for what a streamer does. It probably uses 25mbps max, at any one time. As for the loading part, that most likely has to do with the OS and hardware.
Even the new chromecast is 10/100 using its special ac adapter.
totally agree i use my fire cube with a gigabyte adapter and streams flawless got so sick of the roku buffering and connection issues with that garbage network card not to mention all the overheating
I run a Plex server at home and 4k movies are 55Mbps. So, 100Mbps lan is MORE than enough.

I have used the SD card on one of my mine and it does improve performance.

Planning to get a pre-owned 2019 Ultra for a bargain. 1) Just wanted to ask if it can already support Airplay and Homekit? Thinking of getting this or an Apple TV HD 32gb... I don't have a 4k TV so Im fine with the limitations. 2) Regarding the USB port - can the 2019 play .mkv videos? Appreciate your help and more power to your channel.
What's missing here is that Roku and UA-cam TV have a dispute going. You can still get to it, but may be challenging for non-techie folks.

You can sell your old one for a quite a reasonable price.
Or when you push the arrows to move over to the next youtube video and it decides to load up hulu or it doesn't do anything till I open the battery compartment take out a battery put it back in then I can change the channel ect.
Did I miss it in the video or did you NOT explain the new Bluetooth feature ? Supposedly it has USB 3 support, did you mention that? USB max size? Any new video file format or enhanced video support ?

@@keithjohnson2863 that is RAM, I meant channel storage(I corrected this, thanks), the Roku Ultra 4640 model had 1GB, the 4660, 4661 and 4670 all had 512MB, we don't know what the Roku Ultra 4800 has yet. if it is 512MB with no microSD slot that is a deal breaker for me
Doesnt the new Roku ultra tout a better wifi range. Would have been good to include a speed measurement and distance test with old and new models

I'm not to sure about getting the Netflix service, can I use it as a plain streaming box without signing up for a Netflix account? I have a ton of HEVC x2.65 & x.2.45 mkv even some old avi files on USB 3 flash drive will these play OK?. I'm tired of buying a new no-name box TV every few months (after they always crap out). have you ever seen the screen on your tv and all it shows is ROKU nothing else and it does not do anything else? i have push the reset button and hold it down for 5 second and unplug everything it still does not work.
Can you tell me how this works, what do I need to get started. Do I need the internet, do I need Why-fi, do I need cable or a modem to hook this up.

Over heating issues every 15 to 30 minutes the device turns itself off and when you are able to turn the light back on the device, you have problems accessing roku.
Can you use the bluetooth on this for the Google Music app on the iphone

Yep but the SD card did not really seem to do much other than load the channels a little faster.

My setup is 5.1/7.1 Dolby using Optical cable!
So the Device needs to be HDMI to the tv then OPT to my audio receiver.
Hopefully there’s a device that you know supports this!
In a device regardless of brand I wanted NFLIX,Vudu,Hulu,YT and hopefully Shudder to stream!

this device is used to get away from commercial tv and all the ads. However it is useless against the abundance of ads bombarding us from U tube every 3 to 4 minutes. There is no ad blocker that will work with this device. I suggest another with this capability. If Roku doesn't wise up $ales will drop thru the floor
Subscribe to UA-cam premium, the ads go away. I've had UA-cam premium for a year, I wouldn't go back.

I have a 2015 TCL 32S3700 with Roku built in. It's feeling very slow lately and can't load some channels. Do you know ... can I plug this external Roku into my TV via an HDMI port and use it? Mine is hardwired and there is a SUBSTANTIAL difference in speed vs WiFi - go hardwired if you’re able to.

What would you say for video quality in Dolby vision vs hdr10? I have 2019 with hdr10. I want to see how amazing Dolby Vision movies will look in my newer gigantic screen. Hdr10 looks stunning.

Do these support 24p playback? Also how does the audio work? Will it switch on its own for what the app is giving? Or will it always shoot out Dolby digital or soemthing else? (Tired of Dolby 5.1 on for stereo apps.)
I have a roku prime that I bought in 2017 but six months I relocated to another region in Texas. I had AT&T services but now I have Spectrum internet but I roku does not work no active signal why???
Did they fix the remote doing what and when it wants to work? Thats the only upgrade it really needed and they will never fix it

I am having the worst problem with my Roku Ultra and audio visual sync. I have 1G speeds and have it connected via ethernet cable. Speed isn't the issue. I have it connected to LG OLED TV through HDMI port and have a sonos beam gen2 attached for sound to HDMI ARC port on TV. I've tried all of the adjusting and nothing seems to work. Anyone else experiencing this?
Also Netflix doesn't work on the ultra. Been arguing with netflix and roku for almost a week. Roku says it's a Netflix problem and Netflix says it's a Roku problem. So mad right now.

I wonder if the Ultra units are "always on" like the Roku streaming sticks...that's the one thing I really dislike about them, they get so warm and waste electricity unless you just unplug them.
