    If you were comparing an R-Line Atlas, no one would pick the Traverse. It looks so much better and has most of the same equipment as this version

    I think the Traverse having more power and more usable space would put it in the win column for me. Providing pricing was close to the same.

    Picked up the 2018 Traverse High Country Today. We have shopped many many many brands and models. We feel this is most comfortable, roomiest, best bang for the bucks, decent enough power, and 3rd row seat is much better than others like Highlander, MDX, Sequoia, Discovery, Acadia, VW Atlas, QX80, QX60, Audi Q7, Honda Pilot, Yukon Denali, and even GLS450 (our current SUV). I am 6' 1" 230lbs and I fit back in the 3rd row seat comfortably. I would not sit in my GLS 3rd row seat for sure. For the GLS to have all the technology, it would cost $90K. I would highly recommend 2018 Traverse

    I own both. 11 traverse and 18 Atlas. Traverse has been decent. Have never gotten better than 18mpg combined. At 135000 miles it is starting to wear pretty bad. Using a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I think it is because I have towed with it too often. We love the Atlas so far. Drives like her old Passat (it should since it is on the same platform)

    • @RazgrizF14
      @RazgrizF14 6 років тому +3

      Ryan, the Atlas is not built on the same platform as the Passat, at least not yet, The Atlas is built on VWs new MQB platform which is the same as the VW 2015 GTI and new Golf family vehicles, 2018 Tiguan, and the new 2019 Jetta. The Passat is on its own platform but I see it coming on the new MQB platform soon.

      None that I have seen, the Atlas has been performing very well for the cutsomers I have sold them to. The only issue I know of is that some of the early vehicles had a problem with the A/C evaporation drain, I believe they rushed some Atlas’s through the assembly line and did not attach the drain hose correctly. Some people were getting soaked floors because of this. We had to replace one vehicle for a customer. Since that issue was discovered, VW was quick to fix the problem and I have not noticed any new issues pop up.

    We have the 2018 Altas sel r line awd. It's really a great car. there was one incident of distracted driving ( by me ) on the highway ( because of stripers ), and the vehicle stopped itself from 65mph to 0. no accident. The traverse doesn't have adjustable seat-belt height, making it a no-go for my shorter wife. That said, I'm interested in the upcoming Ascent. I've found Subaru's generally less expensive to maintain than modern VWs and they hold a much higher resale value than just about anything else.

    I previously owned an Audi Q7 and started car shopping a few weeks ago. I looked at both the atlas and traverse, and equinox and Tiguan.. it was a no brainer to go with the VW. And I actually went with the tiguan for the better fuel economy and lower price. VW comes with a 6Yr 72k mike Bumper to bumper warranty too. Both the atlas and Tiguan felt like my Audi inside, and so did the driving characteristics. The chevys felt mushy and cheap (especially the Chevy speedometer cluster). And a terrible warranty on the Chevy. Also, Chevy’s mylink system is the worst system I have ever used. The color scheme is that teal/green and it feels like the 90’s and it’s very difficult to use.. VW’s discover pro system is simple and the color scheme is neutral with a touch of blue and white.. It’s no comparison. Hands down the atlas is the best choice in this review. I can understand why some people might not like the design of the atlas though. It’s very square, similar to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. But I personally love it

    Been giving money to VW for the last10 years. My husband bought a Jetta for himself after graduating college a Jetta SE 2008, I love his Jetta, no major problems and that’s with over 170k miles on it, although I know hate how tiny it is, maybe my ass grew a little bigger, or maybe it’s the fact that this college kid grew up and now can’t fit the 3 kids in the back, needles to say I haven’t driven the Jetta in ages and my husband only drives it to work. We got my Tiguan in 2012 before baby #2 came and I absolutely love my Tiguan, we just paid it off a couple months ago and let me tell you it feels nice to be car payment free. My Tiguan Is so much fun to drive, it’s fast and reliable with 110k miles on it and we have had no problems so far, just maintenance stuff. The exterior/interior still looks amazing and there’s no visible wear/tear. With that said, I’ve been trying SO hard to just give some other car maker our hard earned dollars as we’ve been looking to upgrade my husband’s Jetta since 2016 before baby #3’s arrival. Yup, our 3rd and last baby has been here for almost 2 years and I can’t make a decision, I drove the traverse and it just didn’t feel the same, it’s not “sturdy” or fun to drive, the interior design looks a bit cartoonish to me, and I’m not a fan of the exterior round look either. Same thing with the Toyota Highlander, although much better than the Traverse, it just didn’t do it for me. My husband is “pushing” me to make a decision because he really wants the Tiguan, but I wasn’t crazy about the atlas, but I am loving the new Tiguan with the 3rd seat row, I hate that I’m a VW sucker, VW has made me a car snob, I admit it, I don’t like it, and the reason why I’ve been car searching for almost 2 years, we really do need a bigger car but at the same time, I’m just tired of giving VW money.

    Got a 2018 Traverse today. The atlas just doesn't have the same space... also it's a VW, which means working on it will be a PITA. I am truly surprised at how much the traverse redesign impressed me. BTW we were upgrading from a 2011 Traverse, so we were used to all the space. On a side note, these style vehicles (in my area) are usually driven by the moms, so a 'manly' look is out as well. IMHO the atlas looks like a design from the turn of the century, but I've always loved the new fit and finish detail of the VW's.

  • @jehl1963
    @jehl1963 6 років тому

    BTW - the lack of a separate frame does not make it a car, it makes it a "monocoque" chassis. Using a separate frame is a construction method that goes back to the days of a Conestoga wagon, if not before. Modern vehicles like planes, purpose built race cars and ships all use some form of monocoque construction nowadays. If there is any question of the "toughness" or "strength" of a vehicle built with a monocoque chassis, I can point you no further than Atlas's forebearer -- the the Touarig, which was built with a monocoque chassis and towed a 747. I don't remember the lack of a separate frame being an issue.

    Atlas all the way! I am not saying Traverse is bad - it's good, but Atlas looks so much better inside/out. Interior is CLASSY, while the interior in Traverse is just like any other Chevy interior, which is quite desperate (not counting Malibu here). Exterior as well - c'mon, it looks macho - In order for Traverse to look nice, you need to get black rims, with white paint and dimmed windows.
    Everything else in these two CUV's is similar.
    I assume that legroom information you guys provided is incorrect - because a lot smaller CUV's have 39" of legroom in the 2nd row. Could it be you guys measured it after a 6'2" person was in the 3rd row?

    I love my VW’s but I’m sick of the plain Jane seats the new Tiguan and Atlas have. They look flat, boxy, and hard as a rock. They look like they have no bolstering support either. This is why I love my 17 Tiguan before the ugly boring redesign.

    The traverse is way more roomier and a lot better body style. It just looks very sporty and very comfortable to drive overall. As for the VW, it's an okay compact SUV. I just don't find compact suv a family vehicle. I don't like the cheap second row seat on the VW. The traverse has the option to go 4WD or 2WD drive for better fuel economy, which is a big plus for me. The interior and infotainment center on the traverse is way better in terms of asthetic. Not overly clutter with tons of buttons, it's rather very modest and every buttons just served its purpose very nicely.

    This wasn’t really a fair cost comparison at the end. You have the top of the line trim VW atlas w/ AWD vs middle of the road trim 2WD traverse. You price them from the base model up and Atlas is hands down the more cost effective buy. To get AWD with leather/leatherette interior the travers runs you in the mid to low 40k range, Atlas on the other hand, you can get AWD and leatherette interior for 35K maybe even better. This was clearly a Chevy commercial and not evenly compared.

    When I went to the Denver auto show today I thought the atlas 3rd row had more room also the seats folds down better. I will have to re-visit this if there really is equivalent room. I will test drive them soon. It will probably be a hard sell to get me to buy the VW even if it is a better vehicle because it cost more to fix a VW than a Chevy/GM in Colorado.

      My wife has an Atlas v6, and I own a pickup. My truck is in the shop getting some work done, so I picked up a rental, brand new 21 Equinox. I always drove GM trucks until 19, and have always liked GM products. I know it’s not a Traverse, which is a step up from the equinox, but this equinox rental is the biggest POS I’ve ever driven. My wife’s Atlas is 100 times better than the equinox. I completely hate driving this rental, shimmy’s and shakes from motor, massive body roll, no power, cheap cheap cheap interior, walks all over the road, as if the track isn’t wide enough, seats are uncomfortable, and doesn’t even get as good of fuel mileage as the atlas. Really disappointed in GM with this 21 Equinox, maybe the Traverse is different, but this equinox is terrible. Atlas corners better, tracks better, interior is much higher quality, better real world fuel mileage, and believe it is truly better quality than the GM products.

    As a longtime VW fan and current owner, I do not like the Atlas. The interior is corporate VW which is great, but the Americanized exterior is boring. Perhaps my biggest complaint is the drivetrain. Why didn’t ask GM to use the old 4.3 V6? Why not if they were going to the 90’s for an engine? The VR6 is throwback in all the worst ways. What was this engines take-rate in other models? I suspect, their original plan was to put a TDI in this and shatter the competition in MPGs but had to scramble after dieselgate.

      I think it was as far back as it could go. It looked to line up perfectly with the other side of the second row bench. Plus who is getting in the third row of a Crossover that it over 6 foot tall? It's nice to have the ability to do it but I doubt it's a huge selling point for anyone in the market for these vehicles.

    The VW is nice. But the Chevy is a better value, with date I say a better record of dependability. Not to mention one item I do not believe is in the Atlas and that is the all important 4G LTE WIFI that you can get in all Chevys! That I have to tell you works wonders on long trips! Between that and the at least 4 mpg greater highway mileage makes the Chevy the best all around winner, plus thee are Chevy dealers everywhere you go.

    • @danielcurtin7616

    • @danielcurtin7616

      Yes subscription based onstar is built into all GM products. At the same time plenty of other manufacturers infotainment systems have accident assistance built in using your Bluetooth linked phone to call 911 for you if an accident is detected. Modern e911 systems allow dispatch to locate you even if you are unconscious. Not trying to hate on GM one of my cars is a Yukon. But at the same time built in WiFi and onstar isn't going to be a deciding factor for me. It's just too easy to replicate both for less than buying the service from GM.
