VW Atlas Review 2018 R Line ~ What's Good?

  • Today we review the 2018 VW Atlas R line. The Atlas R line is the biggest 3rd row SUV in the Volkswagen Fleet. If you have been wondering what the Atlas MPG is, how the interior of the Atlas feels, or how it drives, you're in for a treat. The 2018 Atlas R line is also equipped with wheel upgrade and styling improvements. As a VW technician I am very critical on the VW atlas. There is a fair amount to like, and somethings I don't like.
Thanks to Leith VW Cary for loaning me the Atlas ~ goo.gl/B4p5kj (my old dealer)

That is one of the issues with techs not being able to do short term leases or having demos. Customers find issues that we could NEVER find

Good review. The last VW I bought was a 2004 R32. The Atlas is definitely not sporty to drive, but it is a great 3-row SUV. It drives like any other MQB car. It even hides its size somewhat while driving. Ease of access to the third row is better than any other.
I never realized that cubby under the headlight switch was there until I watched this video.

      HumbleMechanic Can you do a comparison between 2017 1.8T Passat & 2018 2.0T Passat?
Will this new Passat's 2017&2018 would suffer from carbon deposit like old VW's after certain miles?
Can you also compare why latest Passat are also better like Camry etc... in terms of overall reliablilty aspect?

Great videos and much appreciated. Bought an R-Line Atlas SE 4 motion w/ tech package 2 months ago and am very happy so far. We needed 3rd row seating and wife did not want mini van so this had all the options we needed at a great price in the segment. VW did not hose us on the 2nd row captain seats like all the other manufacturers do. I drive a Honda Accord 4 banger so the Atlas feels like it has a ton of power from 10-45 mph range. I am diy guy so would love to see an oil change video coming up. First VW I have owned and planning on going with Liqui-Moly full synthetic as oil of choice per my European mechanic friend. Keep up the great videos!

Charles, what a great and practical review of the Atlas from 2018! We will order another Tiguan (Comfortline / R Package) for my wife this year. I currently have a 2014 Comfortline Tiguan but want some thing bigger. Thinking as new as possible Touareg or possibly and Atlas for me so your review has been great! Especially appreciate your comments re Start / Stop features and yeah ya just get used to it over time! I find too many reviewers make too much of these things, they are what they are.

You can 100% tell it was built with a TDI provision in mind. Now whether that was the 2.0 or the 3.0 V6 I can't say. But it would be a whole different vehicle with a either TDI engine

SDSBBQ they can't make any more diesels in America no matter how much you complain. They Can only make a plugin hybrid to compensate and make it sportier, but it will be slightly more expensive.

They can sell TDIs in the US... they chose to not bring them to the US anymore because of how much of a loss it was to them. Which is what any auto maker would do if that happened to them.

Hey Charles, always enjoy your vids very informative. I currently have a 2106 Tiguan with my lease up in Oct. and not sure what to get into next. My options are buying out the residual and keeping the 16 or waiting for the release of the R Line 18 or 19 Tiguan. Negatives with that are the decrease in HP and i understand the Torque is up but compared to my 16 Tig just not as much fun to drive. Big no no for me and one of your gripes is the lack of the height adjustable and fore and aft center armrest. Driver comfort with this detail is spot on at least for me. As a side note i also shop in REI and also wear the same Peppers sun glasses

Agree the start stop is annoying but slow stops without full brake pedal depression can limit the use. Also the adaptive cruise control is AMAZING in traffic jams. Totally eliminates the frustration of driving in jams. Totally agree, sunroof should be included with R line.

Great review Charles it sounded like your impressions were the same as mine on the Atlas....I was trying to decide between a sel 4 motion R line and the Arteon sel R line I ended up getting the Arteon R line it's more my style ....Passat goodness with GTI styling and tune ability with a bit better mileage with not too much weight

In July 2018, I purchased a VW flagship version of Teramont 530V6 (2.5T) in Shenzhen, China. While I driving to 4000 kilometers, a brake failure was found. At the same time, I found that the engine was seriously leaking oil and EPC light turned on. The whole vehicle suddenly stopped running two times so far, You have to restart before you can drive. The problem has not been completely solved by looking for manufacturers and distributors many times. This problem brings a lot of troubles to my life, and I lose my confidence in Volkswagen. This case can be used for your reference when you want to buy a SAIC Volkswagen.

I've had my Atlas SEL for about 5 weeks now. I am averaging 21 MPG city. I haven't taken it on a trip yet. I love the Atlas, plenty of room, great in traffic for an SUV and better than the competition. Turn off the start/stop feature and the hesitation will disappear. I would like to disable it permanently so will be interested in your video. Can you do a DIY video? I plan to do my own oil changes and I'm new to VW.

I like everything about it but the center media stack. The head unit and that grainy “woodish” log looks cheap to and overall just doesn’t jive with me. One thing I don’t agree with is that it looks similar to other suvs or that the styling isn’t distinct enough. It’s boxy, which for today’s market is actually unique, oddly enough. Great review regardless and thank you!

Hey bearded brother.. my family is currently in the market for a new family hauler .. currently we are driving an acura tsx wagon. Ive owned ram1500 and was great for a family space hauler but noticed we didnt use it for its full potential sonwe opted for a wagon. Now we are currently looking for a 3rd row ( not a priority ) that plays a rugged relaible for daily light adventure trips. The acura has done great so we been eyeing the alltrack , then we saw the atlas. These two options for us just comes down to the engine and long term relibility stress on the weight of the vehicles. Whats your honest opinion . Will the 2.0t pull the atlas past a long term period fine or is the V6 be better. Same question for the 1.8 on the alltrak. We always have had honda /mazda/inifnit/ acura. I read price wise maintence is the cheapest but it be further than inifiti nor our acura?. As with any car always do the required maintence and the car will last. I am no where near knowledgeable on VW but we are willing to close our eyes and shoot for soemthing diff. Please help us ! Lol.. if all else fails we will look into a 12-14 Honda Pilot so help me change my wifes mind with that ..lol

VW has publically stated that they want to be (like) Toyota in terms of volume. This kind of vehicle helps get them there. Is it what a "classic" VW customer wants? Nope. But why do you care? They still sell GTIs and similar smaller vehicles for you to buy and enjoy. It's a bit like Porsche-philes bemoaning the existence of SUVs. The sale of those is what FUNDS the fun cars that you'd prefer to drive and own.

Yes i realize i could get a trailer to tow behind the atlas so that i could move the plywood on that, but here in MN, there are a lot of days i'd much rather have that stuff in a covered space.

It seems the industry has determined that customers fall into either the people-hauling _OR_ the cargo-hauling category and they optimize the vehicle for one or the other but not necessarily both. In truth, the minivan is probably your best bet. Not sure why they have such a negative stigma.

@@WhiteWi I agree with you totally. All other SUVs like the CX-9 and Pilot are starting to look like lifted mini vans. Very disappointing. We settled on an Atlas for many reasons but high on the list was that it did not look like a mini van. It's boxy with subtle curves if that makes sense. From the unique grill to the very simple but very premium looking/feeling interior it's very VW. I never paid attention to any other SUV besides a Pilot because that was our previous car and what we thought we wanted again but then yeah, the mini van redesign. Saw one of these sitting in a parking lot in town and was like "Woah, what is that?" So it definitely caught our attention as looking different from the others without even knowing what it was. Then to find out it was something we could afford puts these in a very unique market in my opinion.

in all honesty it’s the best engine I’ve ever had in my life ! impressively smooth /quiet , brisk through the gears

I really like the Atlas especially the look. The fuel economy was just too disappointing for me. I'm looking at the Subaru Ascent. I'm 6'5" but want AWD and decent fuel economy. So I hope that's the one for me. When I test drove the Atlas, I didn't love the steering feel...super loose feeling. I heard sport mode tightens it up.

Guess my economic background is showing through.

The complains about more power is really pointless. This is a family sedan that will take you and your family to and from where ever you are going. Most cars in this segment are pretty slow and less sportier than the atlas. It's not made to be fast or to race. The 5 passenger atlas coupé will be made for that.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 років тому +1

I’m pretty sure I said that. I’m also pretty sure no matter the car I’d want a little more power.

VW has a problem with vehicle differentiation. I don't see the difference between this and the new Tiguan. They are too close no point in having both. I'd say the same about the Passat and Jetta. I have a 15 GTI and it was in for issues with sunroof a few times. First time they gave me a loaner Passat. Second time a Jetta. I drove from the dealer back to my home second time and thought I had another Passat. it looks exactly the same and is nearly the same size. I do not see the point in having Jetta/Passat or Tiguan/Atlas. Two vehicles would suffice
