With update 3.02, there is a real work around. You have now access to count-in recording and wait until threshold with resample in audio or pattern mode. Meaning you can set your pattern of two bars or three or whatever and record in time any external instrument you are playing and make it a sample. With this small update, Roland just turned the SP404mkII as the best dawless multitrack audio recorder in my opinion.

End-Snap is handy for resampling, otherwise it's a bit of a nightmare, at least for me. But it's far from being as smooth as a bar-lenght selection would be for primary sampling. This I still do in Ableton Live just because the SP miss bar-lenght selection sampling.
I totally agree and have wrote to Roland asking for this without receiving an answer. I am a bass player and have purchased the sp404 for its instrument input. Then as you said, once I plug my instrument there is no easy way to record a 4 bar loop. Damn. Will keep hoping.

Yeah this would be cool, but even a decent bpm detection would be a huge step up. Take a sample, it's x seconds long. Tell the SP is y beats in length and boom, it should be able to calculate the exact tempo. I've not once managed to get it to correctly assign bpm to a sample automatically and I don't always record to a set tempo. Why can't I just tell it how many beats the sample is? Quite frustrating and limiting. Still a very cool bit of gear tho...
The other thing we need, is instead of having to resample a pad that we added efx too… and making the pads messy… is just to be able to apply the efx to the pad with the push of a button. If i have a drone sound that is long and perfectly looped… having to resample the whole thing with the efx and keep the loop perfectly is a pain. That'd be great. I've been playing guitar for three decades myself , waiting on my S.P. Usually, I use my DAW for such things .No doubt you can control the start and stop via midi through a footswitch like I control my various rack gear ( I'm gonna try anyway ).
Lets hope a different company makes a sampler even cheaper and better soon. Pressure on company's from competition always help the consumer in the end.
Yeah this would be amazing. Record set lengths and even a simplistic looper would add such a fun way to create music on this device. Especially for live performance type stuff - record some loops and then be able to play your samples and external instruments on top of it. So good

Then again, it shouldn’t have to be that hard to get additional control, if it’s even possible. Many thanks
Excellent point on the rationale and need for this style of looper! Also.. why not add Bluetooth (minuscule cost and size) to allow a Bluetooth keyboard to be used for metadata editing- so everything in the object hierarchy can be named, edited, & organized (Projects, role of each Bank, Samples, etc). Yes, The PC app for SP404mk2 could have been so useful for this, but currently does only a tiny fraction of what it could..
They must have been listening to you, they just dropped firmware 4.04 on April 4 and added the '# of bars per loop/pad' you want and a "microscope" editing feature and renaming files and exporting stems and bouncing tracks, etc.
Great point. Please Roland. The other thing that I would like is to use the pads as performance effects. I mean, use presets of fx’s turn on by using the pads.
Hi JAde! Did this ever get addressed? It’s one of the features I love about NI Maschine. Considering picking up a SP-404 MK II this week to add to my modest pile of DAWless gear.
While that is big, let's just start by getting rid of sample re-trigger every time you move the start, end, or loop knob. That single element keeps me from making beats on it. If I have somebody else in the studio working, they definitely don't wanna hear that stupid glitchy sound every time I even think about touching a knob. I get it, thats how the older joints were, as I've had most of em, but in the current technological climate, this is the only machine with that major flaw. Before we get to adding shit, lets focus on what isn't even fixed in the first place. Its amazing that I never hear anyone talking about this. I can't even grasp how the hell people can deal with that, while trying to work.
that really is annoying. also, when zoom in and move the start knob even slightly it changes the position wildly because the position of the knob relative to the portion of the waveform being displayed has changed. so you are zooming in to fine tune and get the exact right start point for your sound and instead you lose your spot completely 😢
I mean I wanted all the other new stuff... dj mode is great and the sound generator omg. Game changer. This is a feature we need though!!! I also would love to an lfo and sidechaining feature to be added
If they make it a looper, it’s be both cheaper and more fully featured than the RC series, for sure. It’d be a magical dream-filled mystical time if it could loop more efficiently. Maybe even give us a loop mode the same way we got the TR-REC mode?
I agree 100%. Also, why can’t I set the playback loop in bars? There are ways around this with the sequencer, but damn, why can’t I do this obviously thing other samplers do?
Note Repeat MPC > 404 Roll mode. They should improve it! (The first note can be off beat, the notes don't Rec, The speed adjustability could be easier)
100%, isn't that what a sample should be great at???? I took for granted that it could do that and make sure all your recordings works perfectly well together
I really want to be able to have more than 16 chops in chopping mode. It also needs to be possible to make perfect loops. When chopping it would be awesome as well when zooming in the waveform loads in every time which makes it annoying to chop , they should have the waveform be static. Just my 2 cents. We should be able to make beats on this thing.
100% (110% would be to hold a step in step sequencer and: 1) see the bar length, volume, tune, etc + 2) edit those parameters with the knob - currently it's a black box after inputting the step) :)
I know people want the MK2 to have all the possibilities in the world, but... Maybe just get that Ditto X4 or Pigtronix pedal? It's more comfortable to have a footswitch for looper, imo. And it can sync with your 404 (or any other clock source) by MIDI. Then the guitar signal can go to the 404 input or straight to the amp, so you have more routing options.
I actually never thought to have a recording looper in the SP! The feature I would love to have on the MK would be a pattern editor, or have patterns to link to banks
Pattern linked to banks would be great after you can copy both to another project. But you have to put the bank to the same bank and that doesn’t make sense.
@@n-spired yeah... more kinda like a moving a bank to another project will have its patterns moved too, no matter in which bank they are stored. Or an app based pattern editor that can repoint pads to other pads
This can almost be done with the SX! It's called sampling with a specified tempo. Combined with automatic sampling start you can record in a tempo that will cut of the sample after stopping recording at the exact moment the next beat would start. (Page 26 SX Manual).

We've just learned to put up with stuff like this for too long from all companies 😵
that really is annoying. also, when zoom in and move the start knob even slightly it changes the position wildly because the position of the knob relative to the portion of the waveform being displayed has changed. so you are zooming in to fine tune and get the exact right start point for your sound and instead you lose your spot completely 😢
Everything about this 100%. To add on, I'd like to play into a pad while the sequencer is playing so that what I'm playing will be in time.
Jade , I remember your early early early vids in 2017? You changed . For the good. Your personality developed.
Jade is fed up with Roland giving us nothing we asked for ❤ looool
Totally agree 👍
You are so right jade
It would make sense to be able to adjust volume of individual pads when a sequence is playing with an external midi controller.
I mean I wanted all the other new stuff... dj mode is great and the sound generator omg. Game changer. This is a feature we need though!!! I also would love to an lfo and sidechaining feature to be added
OMG, yes! Please Roland. 🙏
If they make it a looper, it’s be both cheaper and more fully featured than the RC series, for sure. It’d be a magical dream-filled mystical time if it could loop more efficiently.
Maybe even give us a loop mode the same way we got the TR-REC mode?
Agreed. I've always said they should add a looper to the mk2.
Preach
I agree 100%. Also, why can’t I set the playback loop in bars? There are ways around this with the sequencer, but damn, why can’t I do this obviously thing other samplers do?
That would be cool! But i would prefer to have control over the four effects on the mainscreen. 🙏
Note: S2400 and Deluge did add Looper Modes later as firmware updates! It's not impossible it could happen in 404 land
Hear, hear
I really want to be able to have more than 16 chops in chopping mode. It also needs to be possible to make perfect loops. When chopping it would be awesome as well when zooming in the waveform loads in every time which makes it annoying to chop , they should have the waveform be static. Just my 2 cents. We should be able to make beats on this thing.
100%
(110% would be to hold a step in step sequencer and: 1) see the bar length, volume, tune, etc + 2) edit those parameters with the knob - currently it's a black box after inputting the step) :)
Yo I feel ya ....I love my zoom r 8 because i can work that way.
SP404MK2 X Loopy Pro = Amazing workflow for me!
Using my 404mk2 as a sound design/ sound module box
(Page 26 SX Manual).
this is a sampler u need a looper ....love you btw...^_^
Word!
The "snap on" does that
