Hey, I just discovered I am one of the highest rated commenters on sailing Yabba. I have receive more hearts than most from sailing Yabba. Thank you for this great honor🎉❤🎉
Hi Ben, I have built a similar gimballing box as you, about a year ago. considering the weight at the bottom, I added a shelf to store cans of foods, the shelf holds about 36 to 40 450g cans of food. I have a removable induction cooktop and an inverter microwave. The gas cooker can be fitted ontop of the box if needed. 240V power to behind and the gas line has been cleaned up and inspected. Works a treat. Off the shelf items is the go as they can be upgraded easily. 90 secs to boil water on the cooktop. 3mins + 30secs to cook 30 cookies. Great idea, best of luck.
I recommend you renew the tape for the waterline every few days. Especially when it has rained on it. Otherwise it's a nightmare to pull it off. And yes, I am speaking out of experience. But great episode, like always! 👍

Hi there, my two favourite people on the Tube! Hearing Ben mention the anchor locker reminded me of an old idea of mine. I will outline it in short here for you. 1. Why do we put the anchor chain in the bow of the boat where it can only neg. affect the trim of the vessel? 2. Why don't we stow it down low in the keel or bilge where it can add to the stability of the boat as ballast? 3. With this simple change, we would need to relocate the windlass into the lowest position in the hull, thereby protecting protecting it from the seawater. My UA-cam is playing up again so will go now. PS. Forgot to mention that of course we would run the chain through a strong tube from the bow to the final destination of the chain.
The gimbal system will take care of side to side movements, but gimbal systems work on 2 or more axis. You have the side to side, but what about the front to back as the boat rides up and down waves?
@@neglectedloves I just don't want to sound like I know more than the boat builders, but it seemed to obvious a mistake to forget about the boat up and down as it rides the waves unless you just don't cook while underway? Would suck to have to eat prepackaged food or completely stop to cook on long passages.

One of the things I really like about your project is your willingness to fabricate what you need instead of trying go find someone to make something for you or something off the shelf you would have to buy and pay shipping for.
Immediate heating of the bottom of the pan without heating the surrounding air helping keep the area cooler. Will not set the napkin on fire you accidentally left against the opposite side of the pan. Immediate digital temperature control. Power from solar panels in my backyard charging the 'power station' on my kitchen floor. My utility company has added a 'Minimum Charge Adjustment' of several dollars to my bill since my 'carbon footprint' has become too small . . . . . . . . . . yet an 'insert' with my energy bill promotes their "Power Saver Rewards Program" ! ! ! Hypocrisy ?
Ben , Love rebuilding Yaba , But a safety tip . The big foredeck hatch must have something to make sure it does not close on your fingers when climbing out using the ladder. Some self- catching hook that must be unlatched when you are back on deck. Danger for fingers here !
the advantage to a induction cooktop is power efficiency, or electrical appliances as well, and running purely on solar is nice with a large battery bank
Excelente ese cardan, por supuesto que va a funcionar a la perfección. Somewhat crude methods of achievement, however the thought process outside the box is top notch in my humble opinion. The end results are amazing so keep it up brother. Stay safe always 💞 from the Philippines.
Good job its coming together quickly now But in the bow you could of made some frames to fit in between them ribs and screwed your slats to them...Easy to remove if you need too in the future and put a small bolt lock on your gimbals so can lock while in dock cheers keep it up
An observation about the air fryer - you may want to test the heat output on the outside of the unit when you use it. They typically put out a good deal of heat on the back/top/sides and require a fair bit of open space around them. Concerned you may have a fire hazard there and potentially could damage the stovetop prematurely.
I can put my hand on my air fryer and if it won’t burn my hand, it’s not gonna have enough heat to spontaneously combust the wood. However, I can’t guarantee they have the same model as I have so I can see some validity in your suggestion.
@@evanschwartz3030umber one these air fryers are designed to sit on peoples counters in their kitchens, with cabinets which are made of wood so they can’t get too hot or they would start house fires. Number two they could always rebuild the whole gimbal out of metal. Number three propane ain’t perfect it can leak and cause fires which is why all propane tanks on boats are required to have specialty shut off valves. Number four you have to go somewhere to refill your propane tanks where if you have an electric stove, solar panels and batteries you never need to worry about it and can stay off grid as long as your food lasts, but getting food is easier than getting propane in remote areas. You may want to have a high output alternator to charge your batteries in case you have a long cloud period where your batteries aren’t charging all the way, But you probably already have that anyway. Finally conclusion, why take the risk of having propane when you’ve already got everything you need for electric.
That stove top could be a hazard in its self ,I only saw a flat piece of glass ? no hold backs or boarders ? meaning the only safe place they could use it is if they are safely tied to a dock in a Marina in calm weather to boot as a pot or pan of boiling or frying anything can just slide right off the front edge onto the cook causing 2nd or 3rd degree burns 🙀 and then onto the floor for Cayou to clean up . 1 average wave while under way will send everything flying 🙀😿
Recommend you reinforce the board you have the gimbal pivot running through. That is a lot of weight to support. Rough seas and multiple pans in use will test the strength of your wooden gimbal structure. Like others said, the air fryer will generste a lot of heat so you will need to protect your cooktop and wooden parts of the gimbal and cabinet too. Yaba is looking great!
Oh wauw guys, now you have landed in my area of expertise: the kitchen and how to prevent energy hogging ways and appliances... How about a heat retention cooker or a pressure cooker in the repertoire? Like a campervan a boat has problems with moving about and since cooking is best done with as little as movement as possible, any means of heating or cooking which removes re stationary requirement from the equation works well. A heat retention cooker is basically a heavily insulated shroud for a cooking vessel (which can preferably be sealed off) That's why a pressure cooker is great as well... Bringing the contents of a pressure cooker to the boil (which can reach 120 degrees C instead of the normal 100 degrees C) and placing it in the heat retention cooker frees up your hands and time to enjoy other things in/on the boat and can even be done while sailing... And then there is the stove top oven pan (Omnia, Ibili of Versilia to name a few) which allow you to make oven style dishes (even pizza) on the stove top, even on an electric stove...
Hello. Ben, by doing your job, you are making my dreams come true with MP. It's nice watching you. However, you need to work on your technical approach. The wires should not be loose, it is dangerous to run them through wooden battens and leave them loose. You should use a minimum 20mm roller for your cooker. Remember that this will rock constantly and these tiny rods will need to hold the appliances and everything on and in them. Bushing well filled with phosphor bronze bushing, self-lubricating "bearing" and will not wear out too quickly.
I had every faith that you’d work it out Ben. I was thinking going all mathematical, but you just used a dowel. Way easier. The bow locker looks great with the purple heart wood and slats.
A typical marine gimboled stove has movement in 4 directions. Side to side and fore to aft.. I see you are only using the side to side movement. You might want to consider the fore to aft plunging of the hull in rough seas as well.
I was concerned about this, too. You've accounted for roll, but what about pitch. I'm no sailor, but you don't have a super tanker. She's going to pitch.
Actually no, gimbal port and starboard only is very common on a monohull sailboat which heels depending on the tack. Motor yachts generally mount their stove solid. Fiddles are generally recommended in all cases. Though I do wonder how high they need to be so they are out of any induction field. Most are two inches high which I would think is high enough. I have actually never seen a stove on a boat gimbaled fore and aft.
Great stuff Ben and MP. However you should consider that the stove and cooktop weigh a decent amount and if you are in heavy seas and the boat is getting pounded by waves, I don't think that your wooden box and two slim pivot points will hold very long. I think you should re-think the arrangement and make it all of steel and with a much bigger pivot point capable of taking the pounding that you might encounter in open water. 2 cents. Abraco.
MP and Ben, take a look at a Sailing Uma vlog from 2 years ago. Title is Boat Tour. At 6:50 they look at the galley and have interesting things to say about ovens, microwaves, storage space, kitchen sinks, gimbols...👍
you mentioned a generator at the beginning of the video. I have a 165amp second alternator installed on my motor with an on/off switch. Works well, far cheaper than a genset.

If you dont believe me just contact ships cooks and ask. After a life time at sea I can assure you fiddle rails essential if you want to cook outside the marina.
hello, what a great video once again. concerning the gimbol for the oven and the hob, I wonder. you have found the center of gravity of the vacuum assembly. when you are going to use these elements, a frying pan, a full saucepan, cooking in the oven, you will modify the center of gravity, so the whole thing will move and move a lot. maybe even dangerously. wouldn't it have been better if the assembly had been fixed with a stainless steel stopper for the utensils on the hob? otherwise, for the time you have been doing this work, the whole team has done work of an extraordinary level. your house is being finalized and it is super beautiful. you will be happy in it
Bom dia Ben @ MP tenham uma ótima semana e muito sucesso nos objetivos mas como gosto da cozinha,me parece que o Yabá terá uma linda e moderna cozinha parabéns pelo bom gosto
Been watching you guys for quite a while and think you're doing a great job really like the idea of electric galley one thing that would worry me is the forward hatch it just looks like it wouldn't take a big wave coming over the bows

Nice work on the gimbal system. Noticed Cailoux chewing on an old piece of YABA (i'm sure theres a clever analogy there) but just wanted to say you may want to make sure she only chews on the non painted bits. Old paints often have lead and other heavy metals in them that can be very harmful.
Its Sad your not at 100k or even 250k subscribers ( You deserve it ), I thoroughly enjoy your videos / content and wish you both the best and look forward to your future adventures on the Ocean !!!
HI Ben your gimble only works one way - what will happen when the bow rises and falls?. 4 points of the compas could solve the problem ...maybe ? brilliant build by the way....
Every week you have to solve more problems you encounter and every week you are closer to your goal. Interesting choice going all electric in the galley.
Portable power units are the rage among Sailors now and they are surprising how much power they have. I could show you how to power your electric with Water/hydrogen. Some friends have been running their 10KW genset on water for 6 years now and when the Yearly oil change comes up it still looks like it was Just changed, Amazing, their generator runs 24-7 for the most part. You Boat is really beautiful Ben/MP..
In putting up the slotted wall, you should make a whole sections on easy removable 'hatch' so that anything that falls through can be obtained. Now each board is attached to the hull, it might be better if a section is made by framing. And then attaching the framed battens. Then the frames and battens are removed making getting behind and below possible. Something is going to fall through and you will need it! Or you will need to check the hull.
Ive finally finished binge watching this entire series. This is inspiring for those of us who, like me, are endeavoring to become amateur shipwrights that will one day build their own boat. Three cheers to Yaba and all the professionals and amateurs who helped get her to this point. She truly is an amazing vessel. Cheers!
But that’s not a gimble it’s a pivot ! It only works on one axis ( in rough seas it’s gonna get messy ! ) for it to work as a gimble it needs to work on both the x and y axis ? Oh don’t forget an oven lock for when your not cooking on passage.
gimballooks great but level is not the most important thing you need to allow clearance to the back wall when the boat heels, so tilt the stove 20 degrees and see if it swings freely if it hits the wall then move the pivot in the bench towards the front edge of the bench till it can swing free. you will mostly heel less than 20 so it gives you leeway for bad weather

otherwise, for the time you have been doing this work, the whole team has done work of an extraordinary level. your house is being finalized and it is super beautiful. you will be happy in it
Don't forget a gimbal lock for when the stove is not in use. You don't want it slamming about in rough seas...
Bom dia Ben @ MP tenham uma ótima semana e muito sucesso nos objetivos mas como gosto da cozinha,me parece que o Yabá terá uma linda e moderna cozinha parabéns pelo bom gosto
Bom dia Antonio! Muito obrigado! Estamos animados com a nossa cozinha nova!
#140 GO YABA GO
Such an amazing project 😍 keep up the good work and never give up on your dream. Can't wait for the next video. 😃😉❤️
Love the gimbal system you came up with. Very tidy indeed.
Thanks Steve!!! 😍
Deu até fome mexer tanto na cozinha! tudo ficando top!!
😂😂😂
Every week you have to solve more problems you encounter and every week you are closer to your goal. Interesting choice going all electric in the galley.
Love it keep it up as always 💘
REALLY NICE ANCHOR HOLE -
Natural gas bottles can last months between refills, I think it best to have a combination of both.
That is a big beautiful boat.
What are your plans for the two masts
Ive finally finished binge watching this entire series. This is inspiring for those of us who, like me, are endeavoring to become amateur shipwrights that will one day build their own boat. Three cheers to Yaba and all the professionals and amateurs who helped get her to this point. She truly is an amazing vessel. Cheers!
But that’s not a gimble it’s a pivot ! It only works on one axis ( in rough seas it’s gonna get messy ! ) for it to work as a gimble it needs to work on both the x and y axis ? Oh don’t forget an oven lock for when your not cooking on passage.
Greetings from Australia. Have loved watching the boat transformation. Are you guys planning to sail just the America’s or the world??
gimballooks great but level is not the most important thing you need to allow clearance to the back wall when the boat heels, so tilt the stove 20 degrees and see if it swings freely if it hits the wall then move the pivot in the bench towards the front edge of the bench till it can swing free. you will mostly heel less than 20 so it gives you leeway for bad weather
It is so nice to see that you guys are making such a valuable use of discarded timbers from various boat projects,
We LOVE that too! It feels great for so many reasons!
i would mount the gimbal hinges to the oven frame on a rail, that way you can adjust them if needed.
I hope your plans include an onboard generator?
I wonder what’s is the budget for yacht repairs?
Hopefully the stove is already centre balanced !
Videos are improving 👌 👏 i like the editing
