As a non-fantasy reader, I LOVED legends and lattes! I have a friend that reads a lot of high fantasy and she started reading it and had to dnf because she thought it was too boring for her…and as soon as I heard that I knew it would be so perfect for me 😂 goes to show that someone’s negative review can be a reason someone else picks the book up. I’m looking forward to reading bookshops and bonedust, hopefully in the new year.
I really loved L&L. I really love worldbuilding and used D&D as my jumping off point into writing my own stuff, I'm a huge character reader, and! I'm queer as fuck. So pretty much this book was perfect for me haha Seeing how a coffee shop was both explained, and utilised as a thirdplace with a focus on 'ordinary people' and community was so satisfying to me. It's always really nice to read about adult characters living their lives without it being either super sexual and/or dark. It's pretty rare for me as an ace person to really connect to a 'lighthearted' romance in a book but L&L had me super invested since the romance was way more subtle and the friendship was what was most important to both characters.
I am so happy you liked them both - now I don't have to unsubscribe from your channel, LOL Ok but really though, I think I may be in the minority of people who liked B&B more than L&L - though I did really enjoy them both and gave them both 5 stars. But in B&B we get out into Murk and the surrounding area and get the feeling of why the town is worth saving, so maybe that's why? Also, I read L&L with my eyeballs but listening to B&B with my earballs and Baldree is SUCH a good narrator that I think that might be part of the reason why I think more favourably on the reading experience? He's so talented that I want to seek out other audio that he has narrated. Oh, and Potroast is in B&B and that's an automatic point in its favour.
I love the idea of this story, although I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea. But it’s really nice to see writers going out of the expected fantasy territories and telling, as you called it, “coming of age for adults” stories. I feel like there is a strong need for these types of stories that let readers look at something seemingly mundane like a starting a business within the fantastical setting. It’s on my TBT after hearing your thoughts :)
SPOILERS: I read this book during my lowkey embarrassing obsession with orcs and later DnD (I’m still obsessed but less annoying about it now). I loved all the subtle character development, the outlandish premise, and Viv’s resilience in the face of change. I was actually heartbroken when the cafe burned down and the way Viv had to pick up the peace with the community around her. I loved the low stakes and seeing the shop being built up overtime. It was really cute, low key sad, and super fun to read
I personally loved seeing the beginning AFTER knowing where it goes. You don’t get that very often, but I read L&L back when it first came out. I like that you can read this story either way you want. (Other than the epilogue that you won’t appreciate without L&L) I think it is a strength of the world building that it allows you to read the books in any order. Loved your chill review to these cozy books

It's really interesting to me that you enjoyed the experience of reading Viv's character development 'backwards'. Most reviews I've watched, found B&B less enjoyable because of it being a prequel. I had a different experience because I read B&B first. I would actually recommend them being read that way 😂

I love DnD and fantasy novels, and I did not vibe with Legends and Lattes 🥲 I'm really happy that so many other people love it, though!
