Was just going to say the same as Fred regarding the cows and dogs, plus some herds are just a bit more wild than others, great video again, cheers.

Do take it easy and enjoy the trail, navigation is not my strong point and seem to cause the most stress, turn it into an enjoyable adventure! Rather than a race. And yes stay away from cows with bollocks hanging down they looked a bit too friendly.

    Alright John,
    Hope you are well mate.
    Doing this trail this weekend.
Just a quick question....what's the fresh water situation like? Are there plenty of sources or will I have to carry?
Sorry if you've mentioned this on the vid, I missed it if you did.
Cheers mate, looking forward to the next video,
    ATB,
    Allan

Hi Allan, all good thanks. 👍
There wasn't loads and I do remember a long stretch where there wasn't anything but I can't remember it being a particular problem.
Generally (depending on the season) I'll be carrying either 500ml or 1L at a time which I drink and have another 500ml or 1L bottle empty that I fill up as soon as I come across a water source. If it looks like there isn't water for a stretch I'll fill both. The same if I need to dry camp; then I'll usually fill both my bottles plus my filer bladder for the cooking water.
As it's so wet this weather the water sources will be pretty full but as the hike is often along the coast (and kinda flat) there aren't as many water sources as usual for Scotland.
Actually the more I remember this hike there were definitely longish stretches without usable water sources. So yeah, you'll need to carry. Luckily as it's colder and driech, you won't need as much water as say a roastin' summer. 🙂🐾👍

@@HoundsofHowgate Cheers for the detailed reply John.
Completed the trail over Friday and Saturday there, and with it being November, and probably having been the wettest October on record, fresh water turned out not to be any problem whatsoever 😂
Yeah I carry about the same as yourself when walking, but tend not to go through nearly as much water at this time of year as the summer.
Cheers for the brilliant vids mate, and hope you and Moss are well, and looking forward to the next one 👍
Just started my own channel, maybe you could check it out and let me know what you think?

Hi HoH, really enjoying your video blogs (which I am slowly moving through). I'm assuming this walk is on the Isle of Bute? The electric fence you came to is quite easy to pass through, look on the left of electric conductor and you'll see a plastic insulator handle which hooks onto the fence post, you simply unhook and re hook. Herds of young cattle can be intimidating, especially if they don;t see many walkers. When I was walking around the Rhinns of Galloway the cattle were very fiesty. A couple of times they got into a stampede and I had had to get out of the field fast!
I think I know which 16 day(?) unsupported trek you are preparing to do.............The CW Trail? PS I love Moss.

Yes, Isle of Bute. I can't remember if I have been before but I'd go back. Crackin' wee place and so close to Glasgow as well.
Ah, so that's how that fence works! I didn't actually think to look to see it there was a way to disconnect it: I'll know for next time, cheers! 👍
Aye, those cows are a bit keen alright, that's for sure! You couldn't even do a runner as they were rushing you whenever you turned your back! Defo one to watch out for with those guys.
Good guess 👍 I'm leaving on Friday night to head up to Fort William and starting on Saturday.

Good luck with the CW Trail. I've met a few people along the way doing this, or part of it. I'm off to Skye for 5 days to finish off walking it's coast. Its all part of my walk around GB's coastline, in stages, hope to reach Cape Wrath by Christmas.

Hey there, this was a great vlog. I discovered your channel while researching the WIW and WHW trails.
A quick question about your camping spot, basically where was it? I've been scouring the map for our overnight spot and was just looking to see where exactly you were.
    Keep up the great work,

I'm out hiking just now so can't link you up but if you go to Kilchattan Bay and follow the route south the lighthouse is on an outcrop on in the South East of the island. It's called Rubh' an Euh.
      Cheers! 🐾👍

Thanks again mate. I saw you camped at that spot initially but it was the second spot I was looking for, the one by the burn under the two line trees. Was that next to the lighthouse?

I live in the country and the golden rule is never walk in a field of cows. Male or female can get it into their heads to charge, especially if you have a dog with you. You should always let the dog off the lead immediately. Tragically a local was killed recently. His dogs had run off and he was trying to retrieve them when he was charged. Awful!

    • @HoundsofHowgate
      @HoundsofHowgate  3 роки тому

Definitely. The only problem is that sometimes on trails you can't avoid it because of the route. In fact this route signposts you to go right through that field!
Normally what I do is try and stick close to a fence line or a river so that of they come over I can either jump the fence or wade the river. In this case that wasn't possible so I tried giving them a very wide berth; however they were clearly very interested. It's easy to see how trampling accidents can happen.
      Cheers! 🙂🐾👍
