  • Ep14 - A Word from the Wise - A discussion on the Poynting MIMO-4 Antennas
Daniel joins Louise in this Episode of “A Word from the Wise” where they discuss the new Poynting MIMO-4 Antennas. Daniel gives us a rundown of all the different models within the range, and also explains the differences between them. And find out why you may prefer the new MIMO-4 model over the previous MIMO-3 shark fin antennas.

Hi great podcast and some interesting info. I currently have a Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0001 Cross Polarised 4G Omni LTE Antenna and a TP Link AC1200 4G LTE Router that I use in my caravan when away touring. Im looking to upgrade but don't really want to shell out £700-£800 in one go, so maybe get the Mimo 4-4 first. Can I ask a couple of questions please.
    1. If I pair the MIMO-4-4 POYNTING 4-IN-1 with my AC1200/Archer MR400 will I see improved 4G signal due to the puc size and technology inside ?
I was also considering the Mimo 3 but I presume the 4 supersedes this and is the better option ?
    2. What 5G router would be the most cost efficient for use in my caravan a Teltonika 5G router or InHand as I will want to also have duel sims for a more robust and resilliant installation.
    3. Im not sure of the added benefits of the Mimo 4 - 17 as I won't be using GPS and im not sure what the WiFi bit of it does, does it take a signal from the router and extends it outside up to a certain range (30m) so that the wifi can be used away from the base unit or a hotspot from others ?
Hope your able to advise and then hopefully proceed with a purchase.
    Kind Regards
    Andy

Hi Andy, it's good to hear you enjoyed the podcast!
      1. The MIMO-4 range of antennas is stronger than the XPOL in remote, rural areas, but the MIMO-3 range is actually stronger in that regard than the MIMO-4. If you're going to be primarily in remote, rural locations then the MIMO 3 may be the best choice.
      2. The most cost-efficient 5G router we currently have available is the Teltonika RUTM51, at £368.27
      3. The benefit of the WiFi in the -17 antennas is that they can either broadcast WiFi externally (if you so desire) or they can be used to pick up an external WiFi signal and bring it into your vehicle as a WAN input for the router (as an alternative to 4G/5G mobile). Not all routers will support this functionality however.
      Hopefully that helps!

@@solwise Hi thanks for speedy reply.
Just looking at the products you have suggested and I notice that the RUTM51 is Cat 12 WiFi5 and the X50 is Cat 20 WiFi5, is there much difference between Cat 12 and 20 ?
Also we caravan in all areas so its not mainly rural but also on the outskirts or cities and towns, so would I just see a stronger signal on both Mimo antennas than the xpol, I notice also that the Mimo 4 range is actually cheaper than the equivalent 3 range, is there anything to suggest that the 3 is worth the extra and as future proof as the 4 range ?
You also mention regarding the WiFi facility that not all routers support the pick up of external WiFi signals, does that M51 or X50 support this ?
Sorry to ask loads of questions but I dont want to buy something that is not absolute right for what I want, and also dont want to miss out on some future proofing for the sake of £50-60. My plan is to get the antenna first then see if the 4g router I have is sufficient for my needs before I splash out on a 5g router. Again thanks for your speedy reply and advice.
      Kind Regards
      Andy

@@Selley61 Cat20 4G is a bit faster than Cat12 4G, so the RUTX50 would be expected to outperform the RUTM51 when on 4G signals.
The MIMO-3 is a bit stronger on lower frequency ranges, which travel further in remote areas, but it's not as futureproofed as the MIMO-4 because it doesn't support the highest 5G frequency bands.
All our Teltonika routers support picking up external WiFi, including the M51 and the X50.
No worries about asking questions, it's important the get the equipment that best suits your needs.

Can the antenna be surface (van roof mounted - adhesive / magnet and have the cable exit at its base side so the cables can be run along the roof 1m and then enter the can through an existing duct?

Hi I have a coachman caravan but really don’t want a hole in the floating roof, would a mimo 3 or 4 or the Avtex 104 equivalent work ok inside the van or would you need say a x3000 say from Gi net

A Poynting XPOL-1 Antenna may be best if you are not wanting to be putting holes in your caravan. The XPOL-1 can be mounted with suction cups and stuck on a window once you're parked up, view it here: www.solwise.co.uk/5G-XPOL-1

Do these Antennas come with a longer adapter & lock-nut to enable fitment to a Caravan Roof which are generally substantially thicker than a Vehicle roof?

    • @solwise
      @solwise  7 місяців тому

They come with a couple of different spigot mounts or if you need something more you can use an M4 bolt, the bolts are not included though.

If Your caravanroof is thicker than 7cm no, but usual they are thiner so no problem
