Going to leave a scar on your wallet
My wallet is screaming watching this
😂😂
For years
you obviously never bought a Razer or Macbook pro.
This is a cheaper alternative.
@@sbacon92who in the world would buy macbook to play games??
My Laptop: why are you watching this? You have me!
I think comparing scar17's 1440p/1080p FPS with scar 18's 1600p/1200 FPS is rather unfair. The machine has to deal with approximately 11% larger area (DLSS off), however, the drop from 17 to 18 is less than that in most cases = higher performance per pixel.
The mini LED screen is the big selling point I feel. 14th gen CPU is take it or leave it. I was shopping Amazon today and noticed that most of the 3rd party G18 sellers have discounted the non mini LED 13th gen variants by several hundred dollars. So if you don't care about the upgraded screen, there are some decent discounts available. The non mini LED screen is still a very nice 500 nits IPS.
When it comes to asus gaming laptops releasing this week, I think only the new zephyrus g14/g16 received significant upgrades. I know the strix and scar got massive redesigns last year. Was also expecting some major changes to their Tuf line. Maybe next year
They already got their updated designs in 2022. We'll probably get new one in 2025. I do like their current ones. For now
Get the hell out 😂, the new g14 and g16 are basically old laptops(same cpu, downgraded gpu to 90w tgp and 100w)with new design the only thing new to them are huge price
Finally a worthy upgrade to my g14. I've been waiting for this for a long time.
What’s wrong with your g14? Isn’t it relatively still new?
@@syndicatepenguin8420 Nothing's wrong with it, my wife took over it 🤣
I still have my scar 18 2023. I'm gonna keep it until 3-4 years more. 🙂
how has it been functioning for you? Any issues? screenwise? temp wise? fps wise?
@@sosuslays I have the Scar 18 (2023) aswell, no problems so far. Just the battery life..
@@RadioactiveGTA thank you bro thats good to know, especially with the 2023s having some coil whine issues and screen flickers, so thats good, ik they released a bios update to help fix that, and i wanna go 2024 versions too, so appreciate that, i think ill take the risk and return if needed
@@sosuslays coil whine hasn't really been a thing for me, especially since I like mine sounding like jet engine but running as cool as possible. You definitely need to disable the aggressive CPU boosting from the power plan (with a little registry editing) since that just jacks up the temps way too high for no real benefit in some games.
3-4? maybe 10 years ...
Mooooonnnizzz! I agree about the oddity of buying 'new' last gen architecture Intel chips when we know for certain those are about to be replaced and far surpassed when the more powerful laptop chips are based on Meteor Lake. I really can't wait to see what we get when Intel releases those chips.
Can you compare the 18 inch IPS screen with the MiniLED screen?
Looking at the sticker, NVIDIA is definitely doing well.
Just ordered mine --- that + the 2 year Geek Squad warranty with it definitely left a scar 😂
Lol let me know how you like it
i did the same. Purchased the total tech plan for $180 which gives you the 2 years protection
very very very futuristic for someone whose not owned a laptop in over a decade. I forgot the hardrive blinkers are right there infront of your face. lol
I got the 2023 4080 version for $1200. Is that a good price and value?
I bought the Scar 16 last year and I have to say, I really wish I waited. The only reason I held back from buy a Scar 18 last year was because I felt like the space inside the chassis was wasted by Asus, but most importantly, the lack of a mini-led screen.
I am going to attempt to transplant a Scar 16 2024 screen (2k dimming zones) into my 2023 Scar 16. A user on reddit got a Scar 16 2024 panel working on their Zephyrus M16 2023, so I am hopeful that it will work.
unfortunately on the 2024 versions they still didnt utilize all the space in the chassis they could have on the 18” they couldve easily rearranged for back ports. But that new Mini-LED is something special. Definitely copping for that very reason
Scar 16 4080 2023 owner, I want to share my experience: the price was steep but I'm still in love with It. I bought It because I needed a workhorse for some travelling but for the most part of the year I was at home. I was forcing myself to use my desktop 12900k with 4090 but I spent an entire year replacing It with the Scar (Thunderbolt 4 hub multiscreen for work and some hours of AAA gaming when I could). I never loved so much a piece of hardware in my entire life: beautiful screen, snappy performance, updates every other day. The only problem I had and I have is some coil whine here and there, not a dealbreaker for me, by the way!
@@raffaelerusso82 that's awesome to hear. I transplanted the 2024 scar 16 screen to mine and it's absolutely glorious. This is definitely one of the best gaming laptops of all time.
@@sosuslays definitely. If the price difference isn't massive between the two, then the 2024 version, despite its design shortcomings, is the one to get just because of the amazing screen.
@@niko1even yessir i copped the 2024 scar 18 4090 in january, has no coil whine, runs amazing, and no issues at all
MiniLed screen is a nice upgrade. Price in UK is 4k£ which is 4700$ 🙈 will wait for the AMD to hatch out new processor )
I know i've watched too many Moniz videos when the first thing I look for is the sticker placement. And not only in these videos but even on other channels. I always think to myself, for example, damn Tech Chap, why aren't you mentioning those crooked stickers?
They cant handle the intense dark history of the sticker guy. They would have nightmares
Worth buying for improved mini-led? Great video.
Get the scar 16 4090 with Intel 13th, there amazing deals
I am curios if this now support 64GB of DDR5-5600MHz . I know that previous version only worked with 32GB of DDR5 at 5600MHz
Sir ryzen and intel both launch npu in laptop processor If you want ..
Ryzen also has npu in desktop.
But when intel add npu in desktop processor in 15 gen desktop processor. ? Or next year desktop generation?
Given how flat the CPU improvement is, should one hold out for a few months for newer more efficient CPUs? New Intel / AMD / Snapdragon? Or pull the trigger now?
Got this bad boy on eBay for $2,660. Loving it so far, fantastic screen!
Nice deal!
Glad they didn't fix what ain't broke. I'm running last year's model with the i9 13980HX, and it's truly a beast. Also glad missing out on the 14980HX doesn't leave much room for FOMO.
The screen is a nice update, but the old isn't bad, either. I think, given the same gfx card, last year's model might be a great pick as soon as this one's available. Pricing will be tempting.
Isn't this the Deadpool guy?
I wonder if we will still get coil whine in 2024 models
The Mini LED is the big upgrade this year. It's bright and lots of dimming zones.
Personally I prefer glossy, but this display is pretty good looking.
One thing that I wish was that they upgraded their speakers.
Ya the speakers are nothing special but display is gorgeous
You prefer glossy? What, do Ninjas keep coming after you?
At the price, 2k camera should be a minimum. Keyboard layout is perfect. I have always found myself comfortable at 16". Interested to see how 18" would feel.
so far i think the Zephyrus G16 looks the best, but the low tdp on the gpu kinda sucks...makes a 4090 kinda pointless? and performane severely limited...wish tdp was higher
I agree I wouldn't go higher than a 4070 in the g16
@@MatthewMoniz Disagree. If you use apps that can take advantage of vRAM, then the 4080 makes sense.
I have a LG C3, would this laptop pair well with it for gaming?
Does it release heat to your hand when using the mouse???
It would for sure be heavier if it was aluminum, but Razer seems to pull it off pretty well, even in an 18 inch laptop. This is just me personally; if I'm spending over $3k on a laptop, I really need it not to be made from plastic. I'm glad a plastic option exists for people who want to save a bit or care more about weight than durability (which seems like an odd choice, but i can see how it is possible), but I would hate to get scrape marks, gouges and scratches on such an expensive machine, especially when many people would be holding on to the thing for several years.
that price tag is crazy.....fire review though!
Thanks! I appreciate it
I cannot unsee the lack of symmetry and straight lining between the backplate and the rear at 9:43.
Man i really don't know what to do i need a laptop good enough for gaming as well as I want wonderful screen what should I buy
Thanks for the review Matt, that is a beautiful device. If I was in the market for a laptop that would meet all of my computing needs (i.e., desktop replacement) it would be on my short list.
Anyone got rog g17 2023 ? Is it good ? I wanna get it. Quality wise.
I think ill just get a budget laptop right now and save for a premium laptop for the 50 series on its second year. I just feel like 2024 has nothing significant to offer. Hopefully by then limited vrams will be addressed, intel arc cpus like meteorlake will be polished, dlss 5.5, undervoltable i9s, legion 5 pro rgb keyboard actually looking good, not the garbage rgb we have now.
😂
Hi Matthew
I like Asus rog Zephyrus g16 with core ultra 9 and rtx 4080.
Do you think it can handle 4k gaming with external monitor or it's weak for that?
Thanks❤️
A little weak due to the tgp id honestly stick with a 4070 in a g16
@@MatthewMoniz but 4070 has only 8GB vram!😞
@@MatthewMonizcurrently looking for a multipurpose travel friendly 16 inch laptop. And seems like the new 4070 g16 and 2024 yoga pro 9i are sweet spots for me. What is your impression on these machines? From what i ve seen from previews the G16 looks amazing but its display is way too wobbly
@@RezaAghapourunfortunately the laptops psu doesnt provide enough power to the 4080 to utilize its full potential
Waiting for the G16 review and release date
It has 4 speaker, 2 at the bottom and 2 under the display
Have they fixed the coil whine ? Did you hear anything ?
I got one and with armoury crate I couldn't really hear any whine when gaming as the fans spin up a bit. When I uninstalled armoury crate and went with g-helper and used silent mode for wow classic the fans are almost fully silent and the whine becomes slightly audible.
I am returning it and getting another one in the hopes of getting one that doesn't whine at all
@@sebastiaanvandingenen1472 good luck on getting one without that coil whine. Also g helper is really awesome.
So there is a free slot for another ssd??
Was thinking to upgrade from my 2021 models... not that I've saved enough to afford one, but... it seems not worth it yet for my use case, but the screens are becoming awesome. Great early review Matt, always love your SCAR reviews.
Does a 4080 scar good choice
Honestly love the review i currently have a Rog M16 with 240 hz 4k display and a 4070 i think this would be a great upgrade. Only thing is its going to hurt my wallet forsure.😂😂😢
The SCAR 16/18 versions have 4 speakers, 2 at the bottom and 2 at the top, directly under the display when opened. You can even see the cut out holes for the speakers when the lid is open. The strix versions only have 2 speakers at the bottom. A little surprising this was not researched before doing a review. Also in the slides showing FPS, there is no "AMD Rog strix scar 18". The AMD versions come in 17.3 inches, and the 18" come with intel only. This video needs editing.
Calm tf down Cpt.Planet
@@turbomunch do everyone a favor including yourself and please stop talking
Can you do a CPU explantion video? what the hell is meteor lake
For strix g18, buying the 2023 model in cheaper price seems to be the better option since not much has been changed, what do you think?
The 4090 model is 7500 AUD here, I just expect some extra stuff for that much cash including a proper 1080P webcam with Windows Hello and all the F Key functions lit up. To just exclude those from backlighting really confuses me.
I was also expecting the same. The interior could also been upgraded from plastic to metal and also the speakers. I don't know why aren't they giving these upgrades at those high price range
I want to install a samsung M.2 nvme with heatsink in this laptop. will it fit? Please, someone let me know, thanks!
HMm this Pc or would you get a Msi Raider ge78?
This or the 2024 Legion 9i?
How about the scar 16 tho?
do you notice any coil whine?
Standard in most Asus laptops.
does it burn hot ? because thats basically the trend on 2024 hot as hell
why there is no glossy screen on any gaming laptop with mniled?
Glossy screens are so rare on gaming laptops and I don't know why?! TV's are glossy and people are fine with that, Macbooks are glossy, no issues there but for some reason almost every Gaming laptop is matte with no option to change it! Don't manufacturers know some of us want that
I got the 2023 16 inch version of this. Really powerful
hell yeah!but-this is so expensive😢
is there a Zephyrus G18?
Why does the side plastic look like an off brand controller you'd give to your brother when playing co-op
polycarbonate , meant to show off more rgb brightness, but id rather metal lmao
At this point I don't understand why they're including an RJ port...
i loved the scar for their rear ports.... plus mini led in 2K is frustrating. I will wait for the blade 18 in 4k, and hope with mini led (no oled i hope). Good review as usual and funny spot around the Nvidia stickers ;-)
no oled since you rather eat shit than have better displays
@@svgstudios831 hey please just shut up, who cares with your opinion?
@@brianmclesggy nobody did with yours anyway, it’s just funny
It makes no sense to play in 4k on a laptop unless you play old games maybe to get high fps. Why do you need 4k on small screen for games
Companies are waiting for ARM SoCs with Windows 12 optimised for ARM
Tried AAA gaming on windows ARM lately?
I have last years Asus Scar 18, it can take 96GB of ram, the specs are not explained very well, what they mean is that it can take a total of 64gb per slot(Total 128gb). Since 48gb sodims are now available I took a gamble to see if that was true and it is, So when 64GB SoDims are available this laptop will be able to take 128gb as the CPU is capable of supporting that. Unfortunately my Asus scar 18 being last years variant, can currently only go up to 5200Mhz, They spoke of a bios update resolving this issue, that hasn't happened as yet. So I am rocking 96GB 5200mhz for now.
Agee with you. The scar 17 is a better deal. Insane performance and a bit cheaper.
Ya assuming there's stock
Agree, got a really good deal on a scar 17 with an RTX 4080 hard to pass up.
@@dienekesn9312 Nah , bigger screen is better
The Mini LED display looks fantastic!!! I would hate being that person who bought last year's model at the same price 😅
Biometrics are still missing, ASUS needs to address this
I literally just bought last year's because 8t was on sale for 2300. Same specs except the new display, new processor and 32gb instead of 16gb ram costs 3k. I don't think the extra price is worth it for me
@@TheRealFlyingAnt yeah buying last year on discount seems the most reasonable
I have too the last year's scar 16 with mini led,is there a huge difference betweem the miniled display?@@TheRealFlyingAnt
@GaroSlayer I just realized the 3000 dollar version from this year is for the g18 which still doesn't have mini led apparently. Only the scar version which is 4000
Yea. HDR gaming is awesome right....lol. In SDR, it's only slightly brighter with better contrast and blacks. Mini led excels at hdr so unless you watch movies all day long it's really not as a significant upgrade as you think. Also have to deal with many negatives of the technology like pwm no thanks.
A bit like M1 to M2, just a half-tick, as the next-gen is not ready. That is sensible with PC sales in decline. No need to rush. Focus on Core Ultra version one.
This is a niche gaming laptop that, for 99.9% of us, is too expensive for what it does.
you sound sick, why did you record when you had covid
I was gonna get the legion 9i
i loved the old features they added back lol but stuck ona 3k 165hz panel is unfortunate. 3k already is going to cause lower fps major and not ideal for comp at 165hz
Thinking about selling my desktop for this good idea?
when you opened the laptop, did you happen to note the brand/specs for the NVMe SSD? this is to pair in RAID. I wanted to get a spare SSD now, before I get that laptop later. Thanks.
better than my 2021 dell inspirion 5515. gaming on it was decent. after upgrading to the asus, it's 10x better! just gotta add more space to it eventually. wish the battery life lasted long while playing games, within 20 minutes it already needs charged.
MOVING CONCRETE!!!!!!!!!!
I'm waiting for the new ryzen, so I can buy a used intel 2nd gen laptop
I love the screen, performance, keyboard and track pad. Hate the look and cheap plastic deisgn and look
Should I upgrade from the Scar 18 (2023)??
no
Asus giving the miniLED version only to reviewers. they are selling normal displays for these models
check description before purchasing, must be 1100 nits to be considered mini-LED, not all of their “nebula” displays say 1100nits so that can be misleading
no face or touch id on a 3kusd laptop?
Nope
so cooll😭
What is diplay nits of alienware m16
For some reason Alienware won't switch to 500+ nits displays. I passed over the AW because their screens max out at 300 nits.
How much is it ? And where I can get one
A quick google search will do you wonders
Ryzen better with USB 4 the same speed as thunderbolt 4
4000 laptop comes with a 720p camera😂
scar 17 definitely wins. intel cannot compete with tsmc process
Crappy cameras make me look better 👍
I still don't know why manufacturers are not opting for AMD Cpus, they eat less and provide the same performance.
Not enough supply
they usually release the AMD versions months later lmao and for cheaper even tho its stronger idk its weird
So would you say AMD CPUs are better than Intel right now for gaming and battery efficiency?
I think I have seen AMD performing worse in games, low %1 fps and average fps were low from what I remember compared to intel.
No. Ryzen 3D is best for gaming lol
@@xruud24What is Ryzen 3D?
4k with no login options...silly
There's four speakers. It sounds like shit because you haven't turned off Dolby or made a custom profile. The stock one is horrible.
Any news on m16 2024?
Not yet
It is extremely powerful, but also too heavy...I think the 2024 Asus Rog Zephyrus 16 is the top choice this year.
SCAR is a portable PC replacement, so yeah, Zephyrus is better in portability
9:27 No, I'm not okay with a 16 : 9 screen in 2024, and that 16 : 9 screen and the ribbon cables on the Scar 17 are dealbreakers for me...
Yeah they always give AMD the worse chassis
I think AMD HX Scar 17 laptop had One big problem that battery is worst than intel hx laptop
Every hx thick boy doesn't have great battery life in general
Asus Rog Scar 17 ryzen 9 3D not have pantone validated display Asus scar 18 2024 already have ❤
720p webcam, no fingerprint sensor or windows hello, old architecture 14th gen, plastic frame, no micro SD slot. Yep, these are dealbreakers for me.
If you cap games at 60fps (enough for 17-18" laptop gaming, with G-Sync) temps and loudness will be MUCH lower.
It's just sad that amd has better cpus but worse availability and relationship with OEMs
18 Inc on God wut 16 is enough just use monitor xD
AMD ROG STRIX SCAR or ASUS?))))) Profi blin )))).
My aim of 2024
Zero chance i'm upgrading from last year. The upgraded brighter screen is nice but at 500nits the 2023 version is more than enough. This 2024 version reminds me of an iPhone every year.....no real reason to upgrade.
Exactly. I'm jonesing, I'm itchin for the new stuff but no real gains can be had.
I'll check next year. Buy 2, 3 years from now to be honest.
