lol for everyone saying “oh my god i know the meaning of the song it’s ruined now”, this song was designed to make you uncomfortable. it was designed to bring light to how horrible these issues are and how it effects people.
I think what's more, is we probably aught to look at life as always having these dark and shameful aspects of it. That if we're going to grow as people, we have to accept there is ugly too. just a little thought that comes from listening to this.
All about context. As you say, there is a purpose to the lyrics being what they are. If a situation is horrible to you, then use it to teach yourself and those who follow you what NOT to do and be, and in that way, make the tragic and the terrible serve a better purpose.
This song was inspired by a chapter from Hubert Selby, Jr.'s 1964 controversial novel about the brutality of urban life, Last Exit to Brooklyn. Lyrical allusions include "Tralala," (the title character of a prostitute character in the book) and "broom-shaped pleasure," (the chapter ends with a particularly gruesome gang rape of Tralala involving a broom). The song title does not feature in the lyrics. Speaking with Secret Sound Shop, frontman Joe Newman explained: "Basically the phrase is 'in your snatch fits pleasure, broom shaped pleasure,'" he said, "so fits and pleasure and Fitz like a second name, like Fitzpatrick so we thought Fitzpleasure, so more subtle." Newman explained to Secret Sound Shop why he chose such a shocking subject matter for the song: "I always believe that you write about what moves you," he said, "and although that gang-rape scene is horrible... it really moved me, it's really well written, you don't really know which way is up after that chapter. I thought it was a really powerful thing to write about." Another link between Last Exit to Brooklyn and rock music is that The Smiths titled their 1986 album, The Queen Is Dead, after a different chapter in the novel. Mentioned both in this song ("Dead in the middle of the C-O-double M-O-N" ) and "Bloodflood," The Common is a park in Southampton, the South England city where Newman grew up. The lyric, "Dead in the middle of the C-O-double M-O-N" was inspired by a line from Puerto-Rican/American rapper Big Punisher's 1998 track "Twinz," which goes: "Dead in the middle of Little Italy. Little did we know that we riddle some middlemen who didn't do diddle." Newman explained to NME: "There's a gang in Southampton called The Mandela Boys. We were scared s---less of them when we were kids. The (next) line, 'Little did I know then that the Mandela Boys soon become Mandela Men' is me wondering whether they're still in the gang or if they've just all got jobs and kids now." The song has been used in several TV series, including Weeds, Suits and Homeland.

You're right to be concerned tbh. This song is based on a character Tralala who is a prostitute. The book is called Last Exit to Brooklyn and her story is disturbing to say the least.
@Stephanie Brown, there's a genre called post-rock that gives me the same feeling as that part. I'm not sure if you'd like it, but you could always try!
I love the serious tone the song takes for: "Steepled fingers, ring la-la-la-la-la-la-la-leaders que-queue jumpers rock, fist, paper, scissors la-la-la-la-la-la-lingered fluffers" especially the harmony on "jumpers". It's one of those parts I listen to over and over
this song is about a girl getting ganraped with a broom to death. "tra la" refers to the girl who got raped. it's based on a book called "Last exit to Brooklyn"
Honestly? This band needs to be heard LIVE. My friends showed their music to me and I didn't... feel it. But when I first saw them a week ago or so I was totally speechless during and even after the concert. It was magnificent, like I was dragged to another dimension and I'm not kidding. They are killing it live. So if they are near you, (and you can) go buy a ticket. You can thank me later.

It really blew me away, talk about real fucking magic. Ever since then I have been obsessed with this band. I can't get enough. It brings something out of me lol
When I found out that this song is actually about a gang rape, I loved it even more. Don't misunderstand. I don't love rape. I love people who can see the world for what it is and record their feelings. "Steepled fingers" 😭 Tralala I hope you're well my dear.

Tralala is our dearly departed. The broom is the instrument of destruction. The C.O.M.M.O.N. is the site of the disaster. The high streets. The Mandela Boys are a Southampton gang who I presume are the belligerents. Pylons are Tralala's stockings. Presumably as a gesture to show that the Mandela Boys thought stockings were their rightful Casus Belli. All the feckless men tell us that this is a gang of men rather than one abhorrent waste of human flesh. Steepled fingers for when an authoritative person sits with their fingers in a triangular shape like a church roof. Fist added to rock paper scissors to add an extra element of brutality. Hoof is camel toe. As the feckless men tell Tralala that what lies between her thighs is their property.
May I ask, after listening to the song and reading the lyrics. What would you assume their feelings to be? I actually feel like there isn’t much in the song that expresses how they feel about the crime. Please correct me if I’m wrong. This is a song I listened to a lot when I was younger. I really loved and it but didn’t understand the meaning. After revisiting it and doing research I do feel kind of iffy. I still like the song. I just worry that not enough of their personal opinion is put into the piece. A lot of people in the comments of this video and others dont even the meaning of the song still. They don’t speak about it much in interviews. There’s one interview where they’re asked about it and they just say to read the last chapter of the book. I believe there’s even a video on UA-cam of a group of high school or college boys singing the song in a gym in front of the school. Also comparing this to their song Taro. I believe there is much more care put into that song and handling that story. Their stance is very clear and they go as far as to reunite him with his love at then end I believe. None of this is to argue or critique them or you lol. Just some thoughts.
@@Malachaii Um...the situation is bad. Obviously it's bad. The artist doesn't need to come out and say that because its pretty obvious. The songs purpose isn't to provide an opinion on what they think of the situation, it's just to show it for what it is. It's also to be moving like the original chapter was to the artist: "So basically the phrase is “in your snatch fits pleasure, broom shaped pleasure” combines fits and pleasure and Fitz like a second name, like Fitzpatrick so we thought “Fitzpleasure”, so more subtle. But it’s about the end of the chapter where she gets, er, gang-raped, so it’s really horrible. @@Malachaii they say "Tall woman, pull the nylons down. And wrap them around the necks of all the feckless men that queue to be the next" in the song. For me this is them condemning the men and urging the woman to take revenge.

one night back in late 2012, i woke up around 2-3am. this song was playing on my local station, KROQ. i was in a trance, shocked to what i was hearing. like nothing i've *EVER* heard on the radio. never again did i hear this song played, rarely ever Breezeblocks did. they never gained much traction in the US until Left Hand Free came out. crazy it's been almost 10 years and this song still hits me as hard as the night i heard it.
Listening to a Spotify Playlist I had made, led zeppelin, Alice in chains, blue oyster cult bands of than nature. I wish I didn't know the meaning of the song actually. Because it's really heavy. Can't just enjoy the groove anymore.
Same :( i end up remembering the story and i feel sick
Honestly reading Last Exit to Brooklyn messed me up pretty bad.
I'm feeling sick even though I don't understand what's the relationship between the case and the broomstick or how they do it.
But I don't know, I don't wanna know, don't fucking tell me, I don't need to know. (= ; - ;)
(Sorry for cursing but the story behind the song is already fucked up)
@@trustworthy_hypocrite1838 i would never spend precious time of my life scarring my mind with such disgusting stories, ew NO THANKS 😵😭🥺💥
shiiiit it was one of my favourite songs. but now i'm confused because of the meaning of it. and it's really wierd feeling. the music is amazing and i want to move to the beast every time i listen to fitzpleasure. but now... i still want to move to the beast but with the face like omg it's disgusting and horrible *lies in a puddle of tears*
I’ve listened to alt-j for a really long time now, but I came back to their music videos after several years, and man, they will always continue to be brilliant portrayals of the music itself.
Yes please alt J, no matter how the lyrics seem, the music is spot on for a feeling.
This beat is harrrrrdddddd
Truth Hurts yessss , the beat is jus so fire
These are the lyrics and im genuienly cocerned O_O
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
In your snatch fits pleasure
Broom-shaped pleasure
Deep greedy and googling every corner
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
Dead in the middle of the C-O double M-O-N
Little did I know then
That the Mandela Boys soon become Mandela Men
Tall woman, pull the pylons down and wrap them around
The necks of all the feckless men that queue to be the next
Steepled fingers, ring leaders, queue jumpers
Rock fist paper scissors, lingered fluffers
In your hoof lies the heartland
Where we tent for our treasure, pleasure, pleasure
Les yeux, it's all in your eyes
In your snatch fits pleasure, broom-shaped pleasure
Deep greedy and Googling every corner
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
Tra, la, la, tra, la, la
You're right to be concerned tbh. This song is based on a character Tralala who is a prostitute. The book is called Last Exit to Brooklyn and her story is disturbing to say the least.
Creepy0~0
Sick fks
I mean the song is based off an girl that got raped to death by a broom stick. lol.
what's a broom stick
1:43 - 2:15 The perfect sound to my ears. I cant get enough of it.
Are you alive ?
Sounds almost like post rock
One of my favorite artist of all time. He moves me spiritually mentally and physically.
I don't know Battleborn. But i'm glad you guys now know Alt-j.

0:50 to 1:15 is so damn beautiful that it takes my breath away. Every time.
@chibob It really is. I wish there were more than just 25 seconds of it.
@Stephanie Brown, there's a genre called post-rock that gives me the same feeling as that part. I'm not sure if you'd like it, but you could always try!
The shivers that this song sends through my spine... every time.
this music video is the definition of "never let em know your next move"
I love the serious tone the song takes for:
"Steepled fingers,
ring la-la-la-la-la-la-la-leaders
que-queue jumpers
rock, fist, paper, scissors
la-la-la-la-la-la-lingered fluffers"
especially the harmony on "jumpers". It's one of those parts I listen to over and over
this song is about a girl getting ganraped with a broom to death. "tra la" refers to the girl who got raped. it's based on a book called "Last exit to Brooklyn"
Dat crazy
Dropping some knowledge 💯💥🤘🏼🍻🚀
oh
there. the song ruined right there 😭
Why the frick they wrote a song about it :/ ugh kinda ruined
I just saw them live. My God. Just aw. No words. Almost cried. Beautiful.
Alt J sorrily have a shit live tbh
Love the band, the melodies, the lyrics, but their live just isn't it

I love that this song came on the radio like twice and then they realized what it was about and it was never on there again xD.
Adrian Mayer it's about the rape from the book last exit to Brooklyn
Adrian Mayer there are tons of pop songs about sez and stuff why not take those down too? Lol
err.. because of the violence and lack of consent? sex isn't inherently bad, sexual violence is. **don't get me wrong, the song is great. but the meaning is pretty obvious, so it probably shouldn't be on the radio

For those who are yet to understand this magnificent masterpiece of pronounciation.
It's also to be moving like the original chapter was to the artist:
"So basically the phrase is “in your snatch fits pleasure, broom shaped pleasure” combines fits and pleasure and Fitz like a second name, like Fitzpatrick so we thought “Fitzpleasure”, so more subtle. But it’s about the end of the chapter where she gets, er, gang-raped, so it’s really horrible.
I [read the book.] I always believe that you write about what moves you and although that gang-rape scene is horrible… it really moved me, it’s really well written, you don’t really know which way is up after that chapter. I thought it was a really powerful thing to write about." - Joe Newman
It’s A Song @Mari M , His Opinion Is In The Guitar , It’s In His Voice…It’s In The Air . Sometimes Silence Speaks Louder Than Bombs

This is my friends favorite song
why haven't i heard about this till now??! FUCKING BRILLIANT!
Listening to a Spotify Playlist I had made, led zeppelin, Alice in chains, blue oyster cult bands of than nature. I must have hit the enhance button without knowing it because I very much remember hearing the fist 5 seconds and going "wtf is this". I thankfully wasn't fast enough to hit the skip button because this song is absolutely badass.
