This is what I felt surviving a mental illness. Manic depression from a brain injury. Every emotional blow was ten times the emotions it should have been and I felt like I was constantly wounded. I was always pouring compassion into others while I tried healing my incredible pain. My heartaches created constant sufferings, from others who betrayed or tried to hurt me and childhood. I would cry for hours regularly and then I made it all stop. You feel very triumphant when you heal something that severe. Like a king or a great warrior pulling yourself through every devastating experience. Every arrow a emotional wound aimed to break you down. But you keep running to survive to be strong to give your soul strength. To end the suffering. Until you're not afraid of death and rebirth anymore. You're not afraid of it. You have conquered the suffering. The arrows don't scare you and you're willing to feel them through and you won't let them take your soul. You'll go down by your own strength not any others. This reminds me of the story of Chiron. The half mortal, half immortal centaur (Saggitarius) who gets wounded and his mortal side feels the pain but his immortal side won't allow him to die. Eventually he accepts the pain and requests that Zeus allow him to become fully mortal and just die. Moved, Zeus turns him fully immortal instead. Zeus here is represented by the physical laws of science and chemistry: arrows and fire. On his quest for a cure before he accepts his predicament, Chiron heals many others. This is represented by us the watchers of the video, and our relationship to the man on the screen helping us process pain of some kind by providing catharsis. The fire represents either death or immortality.
My wonderful partner died last year of the cancer that he had had for ten years and had struggled to heal from. He liked alt J and this was one of his favourite songs and I remember him showing me this video. Like Chiron he was a very gifted teacher who worked with special needs children who often had suffered trauma and like Chiron he had a wound himself (derived from trauma from his childhood that manifested itself in cancer) that in the end he submitted to.(he refused the treatment by the end, as it was ruining his body and causing a lot of suffering) He was born in the critical degree of Sagittarius. I told him the story of Chiron and how Zeus made him immortal and placed him in the stars. I feel he played out this deep Sagittarian myth in his life, expressing the highest of Sagittarian values. He will always be immortal to me......but boy, I wish he was still with us.

honestly, the music video made the song so much more amazing. there's something so beautiful, and creative, and just captivating by the video and the song. then again i love pretty much every alt-j song.
If the actor in this video would read my little message (which he probably won't, but I'll write it anyway), I would tell him: Your piercing gaze, big variety of expressions and your ability to move in the flight is amazing. If one didn't know that the arrows merely were effects I think it would be easy to mistake this for the real deal. It's amazing how you manage to make it look like you're actually hit by them and feel pain by them. I think things will only get better for you!
I love how modern and old blend. It's a badly seen and joked about aspect in the video, but the man is wearing modern clothes and the arrows are old and hand-crafted. It just adds to the perfection of this video: Threats of all sources occasionally get you, but though you bear with you those past arrows, they don't stop you from putting that foot other foot through.

For me each arrow signifies past struggles in my life. Starting with my divorce, moving to covid, isolation, depression, self hate, self doubt.. etc. The gasoline represents community, love, forgiveness, inner strength, finding ones self... in the end ultimately transcendence. Love that.

I remember hearing this on Vampire Dairies and thinking, "Jesus, this is a F'ing seriously heavy tune" (similar to the scene/episode...that whole season). It's one of those songs that gives you goosebumps and hits your soul. I had to find it immediately... that was... several years ago. Still hits like the first time.

If anyone is confused as to what the meaning is behind this video and how it relates to the video, here's an explanation: First, the term "hunger of the pine" relates to how pine trees are known for taking over an area at rapid rates, basically killing off everything else. This is relating to how drugs essentially take you over at a rapid rate. Throughout the video our character is being shot at by arrows, which to me, is depicting the harmful/painful effects you go through during withdrawal. In the end, he succumbs to his addiction, and pours gasoline (a common & highly addictive inhalant) all over himself. After he does so, he seems relieved, happy even. Then the shot cuts to a rain of more arrows, this time on fire, which represents that because he wasn't able to fight, the worst is only yet to come.
I think it's a metaphor of life. As time goes on you deal with increasingly more trauma, get stronger and keep going until you lean into and embrace the temporary and volatile nature of existence represented by pouring petrol (gasoline) on himself at the end.
It seems so simple, but that's the trick. The acting, editing, music, effects, cinematography, lighting, drone shots. They friggen nailed all of it. Tracking those shots for the arrows must have been hard work. Perfectly executed...pardon the pun. To come up with a concept like this and execute it perfectly is a real talent.
as in tracking the forest behind him and the movement to get the arrows in. Tracking the shots FOR the arrows. As in for the arrows to be put in. Tracking a background with so much moving greenery is really tricky. I didn't word that properly, sorry.

This reminds me of the story of Chiron. The half mortal, half immortal centaur (Saggitarius) who gets wounded and his mortal side feels the pain but his immortal side won't allow him to die. Eventually he accepts the pain and requests that Zeus allow him to become fully mortal and just die. Moved, Zeus turns him fully immortal instead. Zeus here is represented by the physical laws of science and chemistry: arrows and fire. On his quest for a cure before he accepts his predicament, Chiron heals many others. This is represented by us the watchers of the video, and our relationship to the man on the screen helping us process pain of some kind by providing catharsis. The fire represents either death or immortality.

My wonderful partner died last year of the cancer that he had had for ten years and had struggled to heal from. He liked alt J and this was one of his favourite songs and I remember him showing me this video. Like Chiron he was a very gifted teacher who worked with special needs children who often had suffered trauma and like Chiron he had a wound himself (derived from trauma from his childhood that manifested itself in cancer) that in the end he submitted to.(he refused the treatment by the end, as it was ruining his body and causing a lot of suffering) He was born in the critical degree of Sagittarius. I told him the story of Chiron and how Zeus made him immortal and placed him in the stars. I feel he played out this deep Sagittarian myth in his life, expressing the highest of Sagittarian values. He will always be immortal to me......but boy, I wish he was still with us.

If anyone is confused as to what the meaning is behind this video and how it relates to the video, here's an explanation:
First, the term "hunger of the pine" relates to how pine trees are known for taking over an area at rapid rates, basically killing off everything else. This is relating to how drugs essentially take you over at a rapid rate. Throughout the video our character is being shot at by arrows, which to me, is depicting the harmful/painful effects you go through during withdrawal. In the end, he succumbs to his addiction, and pours gasoline (a common & highly addictive inhalant) all over himself. After he does so, he seems relieved, happy even. Then the shot cuts to a rain of more arrows, this time on fire, which represents that because he wasn't able to fight, the worst is only yet to come.

I think it's a metaphor of life. As time goes on you deal with increasingly more trauma, get stronger and keep going until you lean into and embrace the temporary and volatile nature of existence represented by pouring petrol (gasoline) on himself at the end.
It seems so simple, but that's the trick. The acting, editing, music, effects, cinematography, lighting, drone shots. They friggen nailed all of it. Tracking those shots for the arrows must have been hard work. Perfectly executed...pardon the pun. To come up with a concept like this and execute it perfectly is a real talent.
