I have two modified plash palatkas. Wore one last night to retrieve my trailcam while it was raining in the middle of winter. Was reminded how much I love it. Those things are perfect!
Lars this is what makes your channel one of the best on UA-cam and my favorite channel. You are always trying, testing and playing be it a pass or fail.We finally came out of the deep freeze today and got enough snow that I was able to plow for the first time in a month, and it hit -6c today and on Wednesday when I go to the tent they are calling for 2c, crazy weather Lars. Have a great week ahead my good friend....Fred
Plash palatka/tent halves in general are pretty versatile and useful, even if low-tech. In reenactment we've built basic 4 man tents out of 6-8 of them. Tack för en bra video som vanligt :)
Just a suggestion. Once you get it Fine-tuned to your measurements, just get some PVC pipe, make the poles to your length, cut them down and add the slip fittings. Then just wrap the Plashs around them, add some Cords and Stakes, then put them in your Sled. When you are ready to set up Camp, you should be ready to go in 10 minutes. That should save a lot of time to get the Big Logs for the Siberian Log Fire. Shoot that heat into the Shelter, you should be Warm as Toast! Heck, close off the back and sides with Snow, drop a Plastic Sheet over the front for a Super Shelter, you could probably sleep Naked! Hope this helps.
Awesome poncho tent Lars! Cool to see the doggies sniffing around as well, especially interesting will be to see how big Boss gets once full-grown. That Evenk coal-bed sounds intriguing, can't wait for when you show how it is put together!
I think that shelter turned out good, and your puppies are getting huge. I too think up all kinds of inventions and such at night. Sometimes it is hard to get to sleep. LOL
I watched another guy "sew" 2 plash palatkas together, his wasnt as tight as yours and I thought he did it wrong. Seeing this made me understand I was wrong. His just needed tightened up. Great video.
I was just sitting here saying to myself.. get up, get out ,get it done! I'm going out on the skis now :) Lars your inspiration is contagious thanks for that..
Always preferred ponchos for shelters as it can double as rain gear when not used as a shelter. Having a second one works well with a poncho liner as a sleeping bag, or to accommodate a few more people.
Awesome video as always Lars! That's a good idea to use a length of cord instead of buttons. Can't have buttons tearing off if there aren't any! But yeah, that looks like a cozy tent! Your dogs have gotten huge! I hope they work out well. I really like how the fur looks on Boss. I think it was your previous video that you mentioned the 12 Wolves. I hope they don't cause any trouble this year. That idea of having a giant tent made of many of these plash Palatkas sounds awesome! I'm sure it'd be a fun project, maybe something you and Sergey could do together.
More ridge poles from the a frame to back base might support snow loading? Get some mushers secret for the dogs feet, it works great, prevents snow packing!
Thanks Lars, you have a great imagination. Can't wait to see the overnighter with this setup. I've been wondering about using two plash palatkas together. I have two now and look forward to using this set up soon. God bless you and your family.
i just bought two Serbian canvas ponchos to use together like this, already have two german zeltbahns in a huge diamond configuration, which i used on a recent camping trip, i much prefer canvas to synthetic fabric, less noise, less reflection when wet and i like the fact i dont have to worry about embers from the fire,
this kind of reminds me of a Polish lavvu which is 2 canvas ponchos that snap together to form a tent and can come with a center pole, this giving it a tipi shape
Hello Lars... I really enjoyed this video. Maybe because this is the way I have been (lol - been doing for fun and work I enjoy) since kid growing up in the mountains where the wilderness backyard kept going for miles. This is the stuff that makes me happy and feel free.
Ah, ok, that makes more sense to just lace them together. I've been able to use the toggles on either side to button them together, but then you have the weird spot in the middle where the two tarps crisscross leaving a gap. Even so, I managed to rig up a great shelter just using the two plash palatkas, some cordage and rope, two ski/hiking poles, and stakes.
That's a roomy shelter! And yes, just looks like it needs a little thing or two to be perfect, and you won't sleep all day long like in the Hungarian one! Haha Oh, and the belt is correct. ))
Concept to reality is a great ability to possess. We seem to not use that ability a lot independently in today’s society. Great video, it demonstrates another way to get out, get it done and do something awesome! 😎 Also, great info of how to join the two halves! There is always a proper way and the alternatives.
I would love to see what kind of shelter ideas you and David Pearson could come up with. That would be epic. Of course he would put you 20 feet up in a tree though haha. Which would be epic also. Taking time off from video making is necessary. There is life outside youtube too. Family first. UA-cam a very fun second place:)
i understand the dark tent thing, one prepper on here slept half the day away, as no light woke him up.. and only had a few hours of daylight the second day..the video was rather short lol
I've done similar with heavy canvas. I like making bows with the saplings instead of A frames. Stronger and shed water better. The ridge pole is better under mounted in that system.
My canvas is actually a painting drop cloth that I impregnated with that water proofing crap. I just roll it up and bend it around the pack. Looks funny but hey who cares
Morning Lars. I really loved it mate, you can make that a real home from home with a wee bit of work. Long Siberian fire, windbreaks and insulation to the rear, it would work great. Not sure about your night time dreams, lol, you may need to speak to the therapist about those, waking up thinking about A frames, lol. :-) I am guessing this is really a winter setup as you can use the sled but in Summer it would be a bit of a Schlepp getting all the gear in? not sure about that. Any how, waffling. Cheers mate. ATB Moose.
I've seen people use the Molle II kidney belt both ways and i have no idea how it was designed to be used but the most important part is that its comfortable. If it works it works no need to do extra work. The only thing i don't like with shelters like these is that the insects will eat you alive during the warmer months of the year and yes i know you can ignore them but when going out as a civilian i prefer to have a good nights sleep :)
Lars, thank you SO much for getting back out into the woods to do camp related videos. These are hands down my favorite! This is the type of super AWESOME video that made me sub, sub-like, and sub-bell!!! Keep it up, Brother!
Awesome idea Lars! Thanks for continuing the work and sharing the knowledge you have gained from the LORD! If you make it again don't forget to put the seam on the downward side of the ridgeline too. As always keeping you in my prayers and hope you find that relationship with JESUS CHRIST.
Hi Lars, I have seen the photo of the ⛺️ tent the students used in the Dynatlov incident, it certainly was a long ⛺️ tent for a ridge A frame design and I do wonder if it was constructed from plash palatkas? One constructed from 9 or 10 palatkas would certainly have enough room to accommodate all the students. Your thoughts on this please. J D.
great setup. i only got 1 plash palatka tho...... i wonder if i could get some nva zeltbahnen (not that hard to get those here in switzerland) and put them up like a baker tent. that would be a fun project.
See its just a big shelter like we talked about ! How bout a tube shelter bent over sapling 3 and put ridge pole and one on each side drape the tarp over big tube !! Woke great ! If you toggled or tied them helmets to to saplings it would take up that drag take care brother
Bottom line, when you marry ancient science and modern technology, you get some pretty surprising, effective results. The same knot and fastening technique will always be in great demand by people.
Ok, just a suggestion. Not know if it is good or bad?? But if you took two long sticks and made a large V frame, with a short vertical stik under at the connection point as support and "ground clearance device" then the sides would automatically have more support. Of cause that might give a problem with water running down the middle and leaking into the shelter, where the Plash Palatkas are tied together, but maybe one can tie them out so tense, that it is not a problem, or in winter, with snow, it might not be a problem, as long as the snow is not melting and water starts running and so???? Just an (maybe stupid??) idea, I just got, but you can test it, unless you can see, that it will not work, just by thinking it through?? Nice day no matter what!!! :o)
Hmmm no. I must say, that I actually got so curious, that I just "tested" it out with two paper handkerchiefs and two wood kitchen spoons. (My father is an (retired) engineer, what can I do?? Seen many mini models of things during my childhood. :o) ) It will work it seems, but it will work best, if you turn the plash palatka rectangle so, that the WHOLE length is supported by the sticks. Then the problem is also smaller, even in rain, as you just put the "Upper" plash palatka close to the connection point above the "Under" plash palatka, that then is close to the ground. Like the Finnish Helsingkipop channel guy is doing in this rain plash palatka test video. ua-cam.com/video/KczqSLDtYlU/v-deo.html Do not come and say, that kitchen things are not useful for all sorts of things. Nice day!! :o)
I have a fixed blade Silky actually :) I like the folding saws mostly because they have longer handles. It makes them better for using 2 hands while cutting.
Lars as you are a man who is familiar with the smell of army surplus I have a question. How do I get rid of the taste of army surplus from my plastic serbian canteen bottle. I was out looking for an unlucky animal last night and had a brew up before heading home. My cup of tea tasted like ass. I tried normal dish wash and a bottle brush but the flavour still leaches into the water.
Water and baking soda works too. Fill it with water, add a teaspoon of baking soda, and let sit overnight. Wash with soap and hot water the next day and it should be good to go.
Thankyou so much for showing the rope connection for the plash palatkas. I have been struggling with fastening them together after watching"girl in the woods" video ua-cam.com/video/Gcjzy_shcFo/v-deo.html And could not figure it out for myself when using the toggles?

Bloody good idea Leslie. Nice one.
Awesome shelter! Yes please on an overnighter in this shelter, with everyone's favourite fire .
You lose sleep over the intricacies of Plash Palatkas? That's a HECK of a lot better than what keeps me awake at night! Great videos, Cheers!
LOL
One of these days i am going to have to take all these things you have made me buy and actually try them out.
Christine Mann
Im in Oklahoma doing these things. I dont have a veshmoshock yet but eventually.
Thinking jackboots are next.
I watched another guy "sew" 2 plash palatkas together, his wasnt as tight as yours and I thought he did it wrong. Seeing this made me understand I was wrong. His just needed tightened up. Great video.

Just great as always and Learning something all the time. Thanks for sharing and Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter
Thanks Lars, you have a great imagination. Can't wait to see the overnighter with this setup. I've been wondering about using two plash palatkas together. I have two now and look forward to using this set up soon. God bless you and your family.
Wow ,it's a lot larger than I thought it would be. The "A" frame gives more room than standard tent poles. Thanks Lars !
i just bought two Serbian canvas ponchos to use together like this,

which i used on a recent camping trip,

Very cool shelter. Looks like you can get 2 people in there pretty comfortable.
That's an awesome canvas tent, one that would be great to see how it acts when used as a means to hunting from. Take care...
this kind of reminds me of a Polish lavvu which is 2 canvas ponchos that snap together to form a tent and can come with a center pole, this giving it a tipi shape

Always makes me smile to see a video up by you, have a safe and warm Sunday my friend!
Thank you Buddy :)
Lars, I wait for the weekend to see your posts. They're almost like waiting for a Christmas present to arrive in the mail.
Nice a-frame tent, looks a little like my sleepingplace at our camp, but i have a cheap pvc tarp, i think i need to buy some ponchos :)
I have the German rubberized ponchos that snap together to make a pup tent. Great kit
The Siberian Evenk video linked in the description is awesome! Thanks!
That's a roomy shelter! And yes, just looks like it needs a little thing or two to be perfect, and you won't sleep all day long like in the Hungarian one! Haha

Always awesome for a new video from Lars! 👍 Thanks for teaching us your skills. Love the dogs 🐕🐶
I would love to see what kind of shelter ideas you and David Pearson could come up with. That would be epic. Of course he would put you 20 feet up in a tree though haha. Which would be epic also. Great vid Lars! Love to see more videos on shelter set-ups/uses for the Plash Palatkas, Thanks!
i understand the dark tent thing, one prepper on here slept half the day away, as no light woke him up.. and only had a few hours of daylight the second day..the video was rather short lol
Yes great idea and of course awesome! An overnight video staying in this configuration would also be awesome.
Cool shelter, nice setup and idea. I'm curious if the central canvas overlap is enough to keep out rainwater. I guess a test would be interesting.
I've done similar with heavy canvas. I like making bows with the saplings instead of A frames. Stronger and shed water better. The ridge pole is better under mounted in that system.
I actually have done that quite a few times as well. Works great :)
James Buell nice to find green flexible bows , in winter
My canvas is actually a painting drop cloth that I impregnated with that water proofing crap. I just roll it up and bend it around the pack. Looks funny but hey who cares
I was going to suggest that a bowedsapling inside the shelter would counter the sag, and add more space.
Mark Mansell happens to me all the time. Great minds think alike
Excellent. I just got my second plash palatka and now I have a good model for making a shelter with both of them.
Morning Lars. I really loved it mate, you can make that a real home from home with a wee bit of work. Long Siberian fire, windbreaks and insulation to the rear, it would work great. The shelter looked quite roomy. With a fire out front and the rear closed off with snow etc, it looks like it could be roomy and comfortable.
Great "boom" shot at the end. That must be the Evenki BirchCam.
I've seen people use the Molle II kidney belt both ways and i have no idea how it was designed to be used but the most important part is that its comfortable. D rings up...
Gotta try this tent setup. Looks Awesome!
It works quite well and there's a lot more room than it looks like in the video. The action cam "compresses" the size :)
Thanks! I just ordered two and I'm sure this will help a lot!
Lars, thank you SO much for getting back out into the woods to do camp related videos. These are hands down my favorite! This is the type of super AWESOME video that made me sub, sub-like, and sub-bell!!! Keep it up, Brother!
I have two vintage US shelter half’s, I’m going to try your frame idea with those ...
⛺️I like the way you have it set up, very simple. 👍👍😎
Awesome idea Lars! Thanks for continuing the work and sharing the knowledge you have gained from the LORD!
If you make it again don't forget to put the seam on the downward side of the ridgeline too. As always keeping you in my prayers and hope you find that relationship with JESUS CHRIST.
Lars I know you have touch on your fire arms in the past but would love to see a hole video on all your firearms you currently have ...
What do you do for the floor? I always see you sitting in the snow. Do you everput down pine bows or something to get you up off of the snow?
Nice looking shelter 👍
When you are home Sew some velcro on the poncho edges and some buttons.
Again, Thanks for all the work you put into the vids. Have a good year!
great setup. i only got 1 plash palatka tho...... i wonder if i could get some nva zeltbahnen (not that hard to get those here in switzerland) and put them up like a baker tent. that would be a fun project.
You can. They are basically the same :)
awesome Lars, way to get it done! Best wishes for a great New Year!
I can't wait to see this coal bed!
Lars do you have a video on the proper layers to wear in cold weather? Thanks!
Awesome Shelter!! A great mind for sure!! Blessings 😇
See its just a big shelter like we talked about ! How bout a tube shelter bent over sapling 3 and put ridge pole and one on each side drape the tarp over big tube !! Woke great ! If you toggled or tied them helmets to to saplings it would take up that drag take care brother
Merry Christmas to you and your family Lars!!!
Bottom line, when you marry ancient science and modern technology, you get some pretty surprising, effective results. The same knot and fastening technique will always be in great demand by people.
You should make a video where you show off the dogs a lil more
Nice shelter.
Awesome set up,and very space
great video Man..Pozdrav iz Srbije:)

It's not a bad idea, and during winter I don't see it as a problem :)

Molle II belt is correct.
Hi thanks brother another great video and your puppies are getting bigger Ha Ha Happy New Year to you and your family
Nice set up!
thank you sir for the lovely video!
great shelter
I love these kind of videos👍
Greetings, GR🤘
I like your jacket, 2 sided German camo ? Can u tell us where to get one ? Great vid as usual
Did you bring dogs with to let you know if any wolves near ?
Great video, how many dogs do you have ?
Awesome video yet again keep it up and stay warm
Hi lars could you make a video on why you prefer folding silky saws rather than the fixed blade type
I have a fixed blade Silky actually :) I like the folding saws mostly because they have longer handles. It makes them better for using 2 hands while cutting.
I would bet that it's also because you can't really carry a fixed blade saw comfortably in a pack, but that seems fairly obvious.
He did a video on silky's vs things like bow saws. Maybe you'd like that video?
Definitely interesting to see.
Hey Lars, is there any Evenk video's with translations ?
I have not found any.
Maybe they should hire you to make a translation ?
Lars as you are a man who is familiar with the smell of army surplus I have a question. How do I get rid of the taste of army surplus from my plastic serbian canteen bottle. I was out looking for an unlucky animal last night and had a brew up before heading home. My cup of tea tasted like ass. I tried normal dish wash and a bottle brush but the flavour still leaches into the water.
Try and use a chlorine solution. Fill the bottle and let it stand for a day or so. Maybe change the solution a few times. It normally works :)
Water and baking soda works too. Fill it with water, add a teaspoon of baking soda, and let sit overnight. Wash with soap and hot water the next day and it should be good to go.
I also found in my case that vinegar worked.
Excellent
Do you know if the plash palatka is very similar to the east german NVA Zeltbahn?
They are basically the same. The NVA has buttons.
Thx. Because the Zeltbahn is here way cheaper than the Plash Palatka.
People are crying in US about the cold. You are camping! Respect for the video man.
Not everyone....
wind chill in southern Ontario Canada has been -40 for several days.
And for the yanks -40 is the same for F and for C
See ya in the next one.
Thank you
How is Boss doing in this weather?
👍
Cmaahhhn jajaaaaja Very good shelter Lars
What do you think about the German BW-Tent-Ponchos?
Wicked awesome.
Nice video Lars gr.Jan
thank's, pal.
Thankyou so much for showing the rope connection for the plash palatkas.
I have been struggling with fastening them together after watching"girl in the woods" video
ua-cam.com/video/Gcjzy_shcFo/v-deo.html
And could not figure it out for myself when using the toggles?
Lars, your belt IS NOT upside down. It is installed correctly.
Thank you :)
X2
Aaaaaaaawesome! ;)
Great video. Howcome you speak so good English?
I'm Danish. I moved to Russia 7yrs ago. Danes normally speak OK English :)
Survival Russia aaah i thought i recognised the accent. I've been to Denmark often (friends there). Med venlig hilsen, Alex.
Ha!
Lars, don't you have a new baby or am I wrong? If I'm right, you don't spend all your time in bed thinking about plash-palatkas. Seriously though, I just paid 30.00 US for 1 plash-palatka, any chance you could supply them for less on Ebay? just a thought.
What.... Wait..... you went out without me?????? Again???????
