You didn’t mention Aphra Behn in your discussion of female writers. She was second only to Dryden in number of plays produced during her active period. I think she deserves to be mentioned, also as the first woman to make her living as a writer. You mention a lesser known female playwright who only wrote 3, to Aphra Behn’s 17.
While I am glad that Aphra Behn comes up in another lecture, if a viewer watched this video on its own, he or she would leave with the impression that there were no women writers on the level of the other names mentioned. By mentioning someone else, who is dismissed as having only written 3 plays, it appears that the professor has exhausted the list. Perhaps she could have referred to the other lecture and acknowledged that there were women who were writing professionally and prolifically.
Please see that this is a lecture series (30 plus lectures) on a particular course and hence a listener/student is not expected to hear only one lecture and form an opinion. The lectures to the best of my knowledge (since i took this course as an online student) are arranged in a chronological order. I am sure you will also agree that the professor spoke not only about Behn but also about lesser known writers. Cheers, Dileep
