I was in xc in high school and 23 is really slow
I imagine he was. I'm an somewhat serious competitive distance runner and I can pretty comfortably maintain a 7 minute mile (4:20 km) pace for much longer than a 5k. And I'm not at all unique. My friends who run in college can pretty comfortably maintain 6:30 pace for the same distances.

As an xc run, i can say that running is one of the mentally and physically hardest things a human can do. Big props to you for staying determined. I went from a 19;59 to a 18;51 3 mile this season and it was verrrry much a mental battle more than a physical battle

Some people (I repeat, some) sometimes work better when they're being mocked, kind of like it's a challenge. I remember being made fun of by my classmates back in high school because my mouth was always open. It really hurt my feelings, but I ended up fixing that problem, and in a weird way, I appreciate what they did. Although, I wouldn't do that to other people, friends or not, at least that's how I'd like to think I am.
