- What's that? Did you know there is a brake service mode? Did you know that if you work on your brake pads, calipers, brake lines, or brake disc rotors that you need to be in brake service mode? The steps to get in and out of brake service mode on a 2021 Ford F150 Lariat. Works with other models as well..

Maybe I missed it looking through your videos but I didn’t see the actual break and rotor change out process on the 2021. Is it the same as the previous years you have on here ?
Maybe what I said was misleading, but it wasn't intentional. I have done a brake change and painted calipers on my truck, but I have not changed out rotors. The point in mentioning all the different things you could possibly do related to brakes should be done while in brake service mode in order to avoid faults.

This may be a dumb question, but is it ok to turn the ignition off while changing the brakes? So put it in BSM, turn the ignition off, do the work, then turn the ignition back on to take it out of BSM?
Definitely not a dumb question because it was exactly what I did. I wasn't aware of brake service mode. I had six different alerts and no brakes right after I did it. Even when the truck is off it is "awake." It basically knows if something has changed. If there is a change in fluid, brake piston position, brake pad thickness, it will know. Even if you disconnect the battery, then reconnect it, it will know there was a change. It takes the truck 14 days of no use or a drop to 9.5 volts to go into deep sleep mode.
Do you know if the calipers need to be spun when compressing if changing brakes? I know the previous gen didn't but I don't want to mess it up on accident lol.
They don't need to be spun.

Do you need to put it in this mode if you don’t have an electronic parking brake?
If you don't have EPB, but you have the ability to put your truck in to brake service mode, then you should.

Will this allow me to bleed the brakes? I read a scan tool may be required...
I am not sure what you read, but you can bleed your brakes while in brake service mode. The whole purpose behind BSM is to basically put the system in sleep mode while you do what you need to do. I am not even sure what a scan tool will do for you to bleed brakes. I am curious though.
@RoCDIY there was a couple forum posts claiming FDRS or a scan tool was required. And some having issues with fault codes being generated. They may not have entered brake maintenance mode at all, though.
@@stevetrepanier4351 Got it. I can 100% vouch for the fact that you will get numerous fault codes if you don't go in to brake service mode. It happened to me and I had no brakes at all. This happened before I knew my new truck had BSM on it. Also, I can see where a scan tool may be needed after you don't use BSM because you would need it to clear the fault codes.

Just replaced the front pads and rotors only same model and i got abs light pop up and exclamation red mark. And the breaks isn’t as firm as it used to. I thought you omly needed the BSM for the rear. Any advice?
It is only supposed to be for the rear. I ran in to the same issue after doing some front brake work, so I've been telling everyone that if you do anything with any of the brakes you need to be in BSM to avoid issues.
I would very carefully drive in a safe area. Mine cleared up after driving it a little bit.
Another option is to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Yes, brake bleeding, changing brake pads and/or calipers and/or rotors. You may or may not get faults or have brake issues if you don't. I tested it and had both. I got five faults and brakes didn't work after painting brake calipers. The trigger was that the caliper pistons had to be compressed manually. It is for the rear brakes with EPB. I personally put it in BSM anytime I touch front and/or rear brakes. Read up on bleeding brakes before you start. Vehicles have become so complicated. There is an order to the bleeding process.

is it possible to put in the BMS manually to change the front brakes. Or what kind of function in scan tools do you have to have to do this?
@@jockermy7834 The video shows how to get in to BMS mode. BMS mode is specifically for rear brakes. I personally have experienced issues with doing work on the front brakes, but BMS is not supposed to be for front brakes. The best thing to do is put it in BMS mode as outlined in the video to be on the safe side. I didn't have issues with the front brakes when I put it in BMS mode. If you ask me why. I don't know.
@@jockermy7834 As stated previously, BMS is supposed to be for rear brakes w/ EPB. As far as a scan tool. Way too many out there with many different functions, bypasses, and resets.
Go into BMS mode and change your front brakes. You should not have an issue. Don't start or turn the ignition for any reason just to be on the safe side.

I have a parking brake fault code currently, my right rear isn’t engaging or disengaging and I’m stranded 7 hours from home. Tried this procedure several times and it’s not going into maintenance mode. Next step is to pop off the wheel and try to manually disconnect the brakes so I can get home but I’m worried if I just disconnect them the brakes will stay locked up and I won’t be able to get them unlocked at all
Sorry to hear about the situation you are in. Did the fault code just pop up or is it related to some work that may have been done? Sounds like the parking brake fault code is unrelated to putting your vehicle in brake service/maint. mode. Unfortunately, brake maintenance/service mode isn't for resolving issues. It's for preventing issues. It's not going to resolve a parking brake fault code. It may not fit your timeline, but I'd have it towed in to the nearest dealership for repair.
@@RoCDIY my problem is I’m on a tiny island and it’s Easter weekend so no dealers are open, and I need to be home for work Monday. I’m desperately just trying to disengage the brake on that wheel so I can get home. My only option is to manually disengage the automatic brake or remove the caliper completely somehow. Towing isn’t an option

@@RoCDIY I was able to remove the solenoid for the emergency brake this morning and get the caliper loose luckily so now I can at least get home. I’ll be listening to an alarm for the whole drive home though unfortunately

What does this do? Why should I do it replacing the pads?
This is specifically for rear brakes, if you have electronic parking brake (EPB). I can tell you from personal experience if you manipulate anything with the rear brakes while not in brake service mode (BSM) the truck will know and you will get fault codes and your brakes may not work. It has to do with ABS, ECU, EPB and master cylinder all being tied in together as an overly complicated system.
In your case, you are more than likely going to have to compress the caliper piston which will change where the piston is, moving brake fluid and changing the master cylinder. The ECU is going to sense the change resulting in the aforementioned, unless you use BSM.
Is this method basically the same for a non-lariat 2021 model?
Yes. It's a pretty quick and easy process.

Did this and when I went to take it out of service brake mode it threw a “Park Brake limited function service” 🙂😐
I assure you it is the proper procedure. I would re-reinitiate BSM, then attempt to turn it off again. If you can safely drive your vehicle it should reset. Don't drive if you brakes don't function properly or your parking brake is not functioning as it should.
Also, be aware that this fault message may not be related at all to initiating BSM. It could be coincidental.

It is for the rear brakes with EPB. I personally put it in BSM anytime I touch front and/or rear brakes. I do this because I did some front brake work only without putting it in BSM and right after I got done, I got error messages (6) and my brakes didn't work. It self corrected, but it was crazy.
@@RoCDIY good to know, I feel like that’s due to this new generation having a different master cylinder set up, I think it’s all electronic I believe and it costs like 2k from what I understand. I think it’s because of the electronic abs and ecu stuff is all attached to the master cylinder and comes all as one piece. Watched it in a fordtechmakuloco video he did of his 2021 f150. Crazy….

Definitely. You may get a fault code/error messages and/or your brakes will not function properly.
