अमेरिका के इतिहास में अब तक 45 राष्ट्रपति हुए हैं. इनमें से नौ अपना चार साल का कार्यकाल पूरा नहीं कर पाए और उनमें से चार की हत्या कर दी गई थी. जॉन फ़िट्ज़गेराल्ड ‘जैक’ कैनेडी भी इनमें से एक थे. अमेरिका के शायद ही किसी राष्ट्रपति ने इतनी शोहरत पायी जितनी जॉन एफ कैनेडी ने. कैनेडी अमेरिका के पैंतीसवें राष्ट्रपति थे जिनका कार्यकाल सिर्फ दो साल, दस महीने और दो दिन का था. इसके बावजूद कैनेडी का नाम आज भी दुनिया के चर्चित राष्ट्राध्यक्षों की फेहरिस्त में सबसे आगे नज़र आता है.
कैनेडी उस दौर में राष्ट्रपति बने जब अमेरीका और सोवियत रूस के बीच पूंजीवाद और समाजवाद की लडाई चरम पर थी. वह शीत युद्ध का दौर था. दोनों तरफ अपने-अपने खेमे बने हुए थे. विचारधारा की लड़ाई ने राजनैतिक रूप ले लिया था. कार्ल मार्क्स और एडम स्मिथ के विचारों से शुरू हुए टकराव में तब रूस के निकिता खुर्श्चेव और अमेरिका के जॉन एफ कैनेडी आमने- सामने थे. एक ऐसी दौड़ शुरू हो गयी थी जिसमें दोनों ही खेमे एक-दूसरे से आगे निकलना चाह रहे थे. इस दौरान परमाणु हथियारों के नंगे प्रदर्शन का दौर भी शुरू हो चुका था.
मरलिन मुनरो हॉलीवुड की सबसे हसीन अदाकाराओं में से एक हुई हैं. कैनेडी के साथ उनका रिश्ता भी काफी चर्चा में रहा. बताते हैं कि उनकी पहली मुलाकात एक होटल में हुई जो व्हाइट हाउस तक आते-आते ख़त्म हुई. एक बार मुनरो ने जैकलीन को फ़ोन करके अपने इश्क़ का क़ुबूलनामा किया था. जवाब में श्रीमती कैनेडी ने उन्हें बधाई देते हुए कहा ‘ तुम व्हाइट हाउस में प्रथम महिला बनकर आ जाओ, मैं चली जाऊंगी और तुम्हारी ये सारी परेशानियां दूर हो जाएंगी.’ मुनरो की आत्मकथा लिखने वाली बारबरा लीमिंग कहती हैं ‘मुनरो इस रिश्ते को लेकर संजीदा थीं जबकि कैनेडी के लिए मुनरो सिर्फ उन ख़ूबसूरत महिलाओं में से एक तीं जो उनकी जिंदगी में आती-जाती रहीं.’
