- A nice multi-camera shot live rendition of their classic hit. During this period, the group consisted of originals John McNally and Mike Pender with almost original Frank Allen and drummer Billy Adamson (who had been with the group since 1970).
ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN & THEY SANG IT BEST !!!!!
One of the great bands from the 60's and one of my favourites.
I remember Love potion #9 + Needles & pins too with great joy.
i think pender is the king of cool myself, and the heart and soul of the searchers,he can make all the faces he wants, when your great your great.
I sang this song live on stage for my parents silver wedding aniversery,it's there most favourite 60's song ever.I totaly made there night for them.Love you mum and dad xxxx
these guys were always GREAT from my view here in downtown Southern California! rockin since the 60s= eat your heart out, i was there;)
I was lucky enought to se the Searchers three times live.Mike Pender has a great voice.
Classic song and a classic group
fab gear still love them after 40 years
mikes voice was and still is something special, what a band.tezza the manch..........
A little Searchers never hurt nobody!
Such a great song, one of my all time favourites, and so well sung and performed by the Searchers!
Perfect drumming by Billy Adamson!!
Cooler Song, immer wieder gern gehört
I Love The Searchers! Always have since I first heard their songs on AM radio. Probably was WQAM-Miami, Fl. I bought the 45rpm "Needles and Pins" in 1964 and still have it as well as several, mostly '60's LPs.
Awsome band, awsome song, this is 1 of my dads favs songs, would love to be able to play guitar like these guys.GO THE SEARCHERS
frank allan so georgous even to this day .my sister and i go to see the searchers with frank allan quite a few times a year .we never get tired of seeing them ,tey are brill.
Saw them last week in Dublin. They were great
Their studio version is the best and it's better than any other version I've heard.
The 12 string guitar gives me chills.
Twelve strings do that.
Me, too!
Thanks Dave, one of the best version, the Searchers at their best
Ya. I know it was a long time ago but this is The Searchers I first got to see on stage. I only saw Mike with them on that one occasion and then he'd gone solo. Ah well. Many who love the current Searchers barely know who Mike Pender was!
The searchers groep uit de sixties , bedank voor de mooie muziek fan henri put belgium
A very, very fine group. They made every song a genuine jewel. What a pity that they could not write their own material in the same high quality than others. They could have been much bigger.......
Going to see them at the playhouse!
I just love this song; it is so mixed with emotion, sadness and mystery at the same time....
love frank alan.
This clip is 25 years old!
I don't recall exactly but sometime around 1980 ... maybe a bit before or a bit after. Pender quit in thet early mid-80's.
I agree to a point. He was most certainly, as far as I'm concerned, the classic voice of The Searchers (with no denigration of Tony Jackson's work intended).
these guys outclass overy other group the UK sent over
One of their best songs!
The originals!
Such a great live version!
This is my favorite song by the Searchers, though "Don't Throw Your Love Away" comes real close.
It's from a German television show recorded in the early 80's not long after the Sire albums and not too long before Pender tried to split the band up and assume the group's bookings. The rest of the group decided to carry on thus we have "The Searchers" and "Mike Pender's Searchers".
AWESOME, MEMORIES ABOUND,
THANKS FOR POSTING
CHOEYSANGEL
Brano coinvolgente. Conosciuto in italiano come "C'è una strana espressione nei tuoi occhi".
Nice shots of a young Frank Allen Thanks!!
wow bella
@frizzlefrap Yes he did.
Thanks for the info, I never got around to checking. Appreciate it.
In memory of Paul Dorey Landlord of the Beaufor Arms Raglan, Loving husband, father and friend. Not because he was a babe, but because he lit up the room!. Passed 17 August 2010 sadly missed.
@riding60 I always mentioned the similar sounding and I was just googling "when you walk in the room ticket to ride" and found your comment. So at least I'm not the only one with that opinion. :)
??
Why is there only a "like" button but no "LOVE" button?
5 stars.
that is correct!!
This song is too cool, and mike penders might be the coolest person in the world.
I was never able to really pin it down but ya, about 82 I think. Mike left in 1985 I believe.
Maybe I'm weird, but I like these guys playing this song, at least twice as good as Jackie Deshannon. Maybe it's because I can remember dancing to it, as sung by an imitator band, imitating The Searchers. Amazing how as young people, we used to have dances with live bands at a lot of the fire companies, at last in the Pennsylvania area. They don't have that any more for the young people, what a shame. I'm talking about people from about 14 to 19.
This was always my favourite by them

great lineup , vocals, and show
Like I've heard John say: "we did write our own songs, but none of them were as good as those being presented to us."
Best version available next to Billy J. Kramer's, which I'm sure won't show up on youtube anytime soon!
supeeeer, sie können es immer noch. danke für`s hochladen.
They certainly miss Chris Curtis's harmonies!!! RIP Chris!
If you liked this song, try these: " Love potion number 9" and "Everybody Loves a Clown", by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Also, "Baby Come Back", by Player. All good songs, made around the same time. All part of the British Invasion.
Don't really know for sure Sheena. German TV I believe. Roy Clough told me that there were a couple more songs from the show. Wish I had them. This is the classic front line IMO.
On this day in 1964 {Feb. 8th} Jackie DeShannon performed "When You Walk In The Room" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'
One month earlier on Jan. 25th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a one week stay at position #99
Also in 1964 the Searchers covered it; their version reached #5 in U.K. and #35 in the U.S.A.
And thirty years later in 1994 Pam Tillis took it to #2 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart
RIP Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} & Ms. DeShannon turns 69 on August 21st
Sadly, Pinder was the Searchers, they were never the same without him.
Actually, except for the drummer, this is the lineup of The Searchers that recorded this song.
Right. IIRC, they first recorded this song shortly after Tony's left the band.
nice
Exactly, it's the classic front line. ;-)
Frank, John and Mike.
Superb live performance! For me, a good live performance is when I can say, "It sounded just like the record." This one does. A+
I know this is an old comment, but I must say, being a huge fan of both John Lennon and Mike Pender, I've never thought that they sounded similar. Perhaps you're hearing something I don't! Oh well, different strokes for different folks, as they say. I'm a bigger Lennon fan, though, but I love Mike too.
english band began famous in italy in the 60's with this song in italian language.
the rokes-c è una strana espressione nei tuoi occhi its nice^^
the searchers take the arrangement from the rokes(beat generation)
wooooooohhhh xx
Actually, it was written by Jackie DeShannon and first released by her back in 1963.
@frizzlefrap Not that many really. I believe he co-wrote "She Said Yeah" although I've seen differeng songwriting credits for that one. Larry Williams recorded it and the Stones covered it. It's all over You Tube.
With all due respect, Mr. James is not the lead singer on this video, Mike Pender is. Pender was a major part of the original Searchers. Some think he's an ass, but not everyone can like everyone. I wish your father and Mike the best.
Almost mark it fab!
Ganz Super👍👍👍👍💕💕💕💕🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🌺🌺🦋
The Beatles were inspired by "When you walk in the room" for the riff of Ticket to ride, didn't they? "When you walk in the room" came out before "Ticket to ride"
@kinkybeatle Yes, I think you have hit the nail on the head. They did write a few good songs but they weren't prolific and they certainly weren't Lennon and McCartney but some of their songs were quite good, just not hits.
@kleinebudde I doubt very much that this song inspired The Beatles' Ticket To Ride. While I agree that there are similarities in the riffs, I believe this is simply because they're both played off the 'A' chord (as is Needles & Pins and several other songs) and they are definitely not identical.
You people obviously did grow up in the sixties. The Searchers were very underated and on of the best groups to come out of England.
I liked them better then the Beatles. It's a shame they never attained the popularity they truly deserved during the early British Beat era.
Well, as much as I love the Searchers, we must not forget that the Beatles were also from Liverpool and they exist on a much higher plane and I'm sure the Searchers would agree.
Mike and Frank are both singing lead on this. Pender's voice has a vibrato that can't be missed. Does anyone have Needles and Pins from the Ed Sullivan show? It used to be on here, but was taken off. Many thanks. Peace, Carlie
Very well done; however, the drumming is sadly lacking as there was only one Chris Curtis. Still, it's great to see Frank, Mike and John performing together -- and I wish they still were. Thanks for the great video! They will always be my #1 Brit Invasion band! Thank you, UK! :-)
song written by Jackie DeShannon. 1964
I've always thought that this particular tune was a melodic masterpiece (in the pop genre). The 60's were full of this sort of genius--on both sides of the Atlantic.
But as for vocal comparisons with Lennon, let's not get carried away :)
That's correct. Also, he current drummer is Eddie Rothe having replaced Billy Adamson about five years ago. Adamson had been on the drum stool for over 25 years when he decided to retire .... and Spencer James took over from Pender in the mid 80's.
Deine English isn't bad!
My grandparents were from Pirmasens in 1924.
Viele Gluck und danke.
Larry
@sangell3 Yes and no. Needles and Pins is a terrific Bono / Nitsche song but they didn't actually hand it off. It was a small hit for Jackie DeShannon (although it made #1 up here in Toronto) and then the Searchers heard it and covered it and made it Mega.
Mike Pender was "the" Searcher.
Chuck Norris dosen't search, he waits!
Beautifully written by Jackie DeShannon.
Makes me feel so sad, Thoughts of my twenties and those "summer nights" in the 60's.
I've had a wonderful marriage and life but still - Oh, to be back when I was single and carefree and that girl that turned me on every time she walked in the room. Maybe you of one of you girls out there was the one. Any takers?
@riding60
Not sure,but a guess would be 1982
@dbailey62 ... how many other famous songs, besides cher and his songs, was sonny involved with?
Anyone know what TV show this was broadcast on?
try to watch italian version by The Rokes, its very interesting too
@dbailey62 ..... sonny bono helped write "needles and pins"??
its amazing that a group this great could be discovered now--thx you tube and posting factions. I think mike penders voice is very similar to john lennon only penders' is better.
"Needles and Pins" and "Love Potion #9" are their best and no one has come close except Tom Petty's version.
I think Karla Bonoff wrote the song. This was on her album and she wrote a lot of Linda Ronstadt's songs, too. I'm surprised I'm not familiar with the Jackie DeShannon version.
Karla Bonoff did not write it Jackie De Shannon did
Mike is on the left
Skilski2003's point is valid. Aaron's dad Spencer isn't in this video as he didn't join until Mike Pender quit in 1985 I think. Mike is doubling with Frank Allen but neither are Spencer. That was skilski's point.
Agreed, MP is (for me) the definitive voice of The Searchers (with apologies to Tony Jackson) but Spencer has now been in the band longer than Mike. Amazing how time flies!
nice eh ? thanks for posting
The guy on the left as you look at the stage.
I think the Searchers version of this song is excellent. I really don't care for Jackie DeShannon's. She was a genius songwriter, though.
