  • This video shows common problems artists encounter with 2D compositions, explaining how certain types of compositions can come across as tiresome and/or cliche. Examples of artworks with compositions that are "bad" are shown, which stimulates a discussion on why a specific 2D composition is successful or not. Discussion led by Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Lauryn Welch.

The 2nd Mary Heilmann one - before Lauryn mentioned it as a road I was reading it as a needle stitching the two black squares together.

Do you have a video over comparing MFA vs BFA vs BA (art major)? If not will there possibly be a video over it in the future? Just curious!

Thank you so much for watching! We don't have a specific video on the difference between the three, but we do have a lot of MFA videos that might help you out :) (like this one: ua-cam.com/video/ggIbEF3wwsQ/v-deo.html) That's a great video topic though, we'll keep it in mind for future content! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

Provisional painting by Heilmann looks like something I would see in a hospital lobby and the road one makes me think of the movie Lost Highway

Also , liked the first Nadia Waheed portrait.. but not the blue thing on her forehead.. is the red nail, henna or nail polish ?.. her hand has henna/ mehandi ... the second one is interesting .. love the colors and the negative.ing of the hand and parts of the body..so many contrasts , as you keep looking at it..

I'm sorry, but Mary Heilman is absolutely genius. It's not about making painting beautiful. It's about embracing awkwardness and uncomfortable emotional painting. I love that painting. I love "bad painting" by Heilmann, Elizabeth Murray and others. I think her work represents the uncomfortable, dissonant nature of contemporary life. I have to say that people who can't get behind "bad art" and who only expect beauty are missing the essential nature of contemporary art and are lacking in imagination. I actually think the first painting by Heilmann is better because of it's intensity.

I don't really get the painting of Mary Heilmann with the crazy colors, but I do like the desaturated brown-gray vertical strip that go through the melty paints. I feel that without it I'd hate this piece likea a million times more. It sorts of gives me a break and a moment to breath from the nonsensical loud hellscape that surrounds it. 😂

I was waiting for someone to comment on that weird placement of the hand of the baby on the right. At least I assume that's his hand, since it makes no sense for it to belong to any of the other figures and not much sense that it belongs to him.

I know nothing about art. But this yellow with the red, green, pink and yellow think ... it hurts my feelings. In a bad way. My entire insides are in conflict with each other. I have anxiety. it deserves a trigger warning .. I am half joking. I cant handle it ... at all. I have empathy for each of these colors in the pallette ... if color abuse was a thing this would be it

I am SO intimidated by composition! I.Don’t Get. It. I want to, though. My artwork is sort of stalled out at a high school level because of this. I tend to do “studies” of one thing and avoid backgrounds. I saw the portrait background tutorial, and I’m still like, what’s good? I dunno. I have photographs from a solo show I did a few years ago, and I am now looking at them thinking, are these composed well? Heck if I know! So, please do more on this.Like Fibonacci’s measurements-that helps with composition, right? I hope I figure this out this year!

I looked at this 1958 Zang Xiaogar, immediately I thought of past and present the colour in the children represents natural beings, more authentic , more true to themselves than they became as adults, who faded into the landscape, channeled into what society wanted them to be.

I disagree, it is a pinball machine- the eye bounces back and forth. He keeps you trapped. Oh, the second image is awful for composition-boring and not a good technique to teach beginners. Not a good way-the first was way better.
