However, I'm very curious about thermal performance, and I hope to see lots of thermal testing on this device. Of course as soon as the pi400 was announced, I insufferably geeked out about how computers have come full circle and comparing it to the keyboard computers of the 80's and specifically the Commodore 64. So it's great to see you hitting on all those points and showing all those renderings! As for Retro Pie, its not surprising to see the config challenges. Retro Pie is amazing software but it's tremendously complicated. I think that's unavoidable considering all the different hardware it emulates. Loved this video! So many of my favorite things- keyboard computers, Raspberry pies, linux and Retro pie! Thanks for this video. Good job!
Also looked at on Explaining Computers the look around at the construction will probably mean the some will resist taking it part to see how it's put together.
Those renderings of yours with the Commodore colours really killed it!!! I will wait some time before ordering this, perhaps the cases WILL become available. For what it's worth, I really do not like the white and raspberry red combination... I have been harping about something like this for years!!! So good to see it come to life.

I've got a Pi3 set up specifically for emulating computers (as opposed to consoles). Having it set up on a desk with a keyboard, mouse and monitor makes a huge difference, and really makes it feel more authentic. These games were designed on the assumption that there would be a keyboard, so it always feels like a struggle using a controller. The Pi 400 seems to be perfect for this, and I hope it encourages more people to try playing these games as they were intended.
Agreed. One of the problem with front ends like RetroPie is the keyboard don't work. It needs to use the virtual keyboard. Maybe there is some configuration there somewhere, i don't know. It won't work on my Pi400 as well. Which is why i use a PiMiga3.0 to emulate Amiga, when i am not simply playing arcade/action games. Adventure/strategy games benefits from the use of keyboard typing. Just finished playing Willy Beamish yesterday, i don't think i have finish this game on my PC back in the old days.
@@ZxSpectrumplus You can use a keyboard with Retropie. I use the non-libretro version of Fuse and the keyboard just works natively, but you can get it working with lr-fuse too. I'm going from a very distant memory here, but I think you have to set up the keyboard as a 'controller' in the settings. If I recall correctly, you select the keyboard as controller 3 or something like that.

It is a very cool computer and the manual really kicked in the retro-nostalgia. It is great that they include it and will hopefully get some new people into programming.
I appreciate the nostalgia, very much like when I opened my Timex Sinclair. It was very similar in size, keys were those bubble deals. I typed frogger in and recorded it to audio cassette. Frogger was terrible on the Timex Sinclair. My C64 was a power house compared. I was very excited way back then and I just got a flash of that watching you unbox this thing that anyone would, of course want(The nostalgia and the pi400). Honestly. C64 was more exciting than all IBM clone stuff until XP

This looks very promising! I’ve been thinking about making a similar solution that uses a tenkeyless mechanical keyboard and a Raspberry Pi built into a 3D printed retro style casing. In the end, the RPi 400 is the more cost effective solution. Thanks for sharing!
I bought three of them. They work great for kids and I got a lot of kids. Games / Homework / Streaming / Learning. They work with touch screen monitors too. Such a cheap way to keep them off my good computers.

I've had a Retropie Odroid version for a while now and I'd say most games work on most systems. The integrated solution shown looks good once the compatibility issues are worked out for not a bad price either. The size of the motherboard looks nice and tidy too. Thanks for the exclusive Perifractic.
When I saw this from RPI Foundation in my inbox this morning, I was really excited. Reminds me so much of the old days when everything was inside the keyboard. The only thing it's missing is a power button 😥

How very 80s Retro ❤️❤️❤️
imagine raging and smashing your keyboard
Good job!
Thanks Clay!
8:44 the poor Chihuahua when you brandished the screwdriver.
Sorry Sophiefractic!
@@RetroRecipes You got the sideeye from her.
I just ordered one and am getting it in a couple days. Can't wait!
Also love the dogs and your humor.... uproarious...subbed
The minute this was featured on heise.de, I ordered one off Reichelt and now they're sold out. Guess I was lucky.
I'm already a Raspberry Pi fan, so this is marvelous.
More significantly, OMG YOU HAVE AN EPYX 500 XJ TOO! Best damn Atari-compatible joystick ever made. I had two back in the day, and both still work flawlessly. Incredible build quality, and excellent tactile response.
Ok, I know these renders at 11:16 - 12:10 are just renders, but I want them! Can you at least link to the original image renders?

Haha! Very Pice.
The Amiga WB 1.3 (Kickstart 34.005) Hand holding disk is because the system is looking for an inserted disk, so in the Emulation core (Whatever the core emulator is, Amiberry/UAE4ARM ?) needs an ADF inserted (Floppy disk image), or a Hard disk image to boot from.

If only anyone would make a full conigured and downloadable image file. 🤗💾 Would love it.
Beat me to it. Dam I wanted to sound knowledgeable about something techy just once lol

Looks like I'll be adding another Pi to my collection LOL. Thanks again for showcasing my theme!
You got it! Thanks for all your help with the video! 👍🕹️
apt-get is deprecated, use *just* apt in the future.
I like that you have 'Astro Wars' on your shelf in the background. Reminded me of when I had one.)
I'm so distracted by your gorgeous girl. Those beautiful eyes... And how she leans on you when you're talking to the camera... Oh, puppyfractic, you're so adorable.
I don't remember Ladyfractic leaning on me in this episo... oh!
I really enjoy your channel. Just subscribed. Huge retro fan. Wondering if you’ll do modern pc playing Xwing vs tie fighter etc
Thanks for hopping on board and for the suggestion. 👍🕹️
It is a very cool computer and the manual really kicked in the retro-nostalgia. It is great that they include it and will hopefully get some new people into programming.
I’m getting two of these! One for me and one for my brother. Thank you Retro Recipes!
Ok, I want one now. Early christmas gift I guess?
It's really nice of you to have opened the case and show us what's inside.
You're welcome!
The puns are of a hi quality today .... Thanks for the video x
The algorithm told me to watch this. I'm pleased. Lovely people, delightful tech and PETS!!!
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹️
Haha i am now watching a video from the future who knew my internet was that good haha. The doorbell went and kid mode was activated glad to see am not the only one like that, have to say the new Raspberry PI400 looks great need i say more, great video as always guys and nice work with the dad jokes as always haha. Oh and get well Sophiefractic and welcome ofc, catch you in the next video take care :-) :-)
OMG - you included an Amstrad CPC 11:44 & 21:46... I would sooooooooooooooooo have that!!!! I loved my 464 & 6128. Our shed was robbed and it was stolen many years ago, but it was my first proper computer. It got me into programming which I now do for a living - so I owe a lot to that little 8-bit machine and Lord Sugar!
What an awesome computer. I've got one on order now!
I think this is what I've been waiting for. I've been curious about getting a raspberry pi for a few years and this I feel is exactly what I want.
Rad...... just rad....... when you get around to changing out the case, I really want to see how they turn out.... considering a mod to the one that I just ordered (hahaha already and I don't even have it yet) - Keep up the great channel... you guys do make for some great entertainment..... Cheers
Brings back fond memories of my Acorn Electron.
Are you still using your Raspberry Pi 400? Do you still use it for general purpose computing ro mostly gaming? I have mine now and wonder what to do with it... I'd like to get the most I can out of it, but, not sure where to go from here.. any advice? Thanks for your great videos BTW...amazing content... I subscribed and share your videos as a rule.. keep up the great work, and thank you again!
Thanks! I still use it for emulation sometimes.
I've had a Retropie Odroid version for a while now and I'd say most games work on most systems. The integrated solution shown looks good once the compatibility issues are worked out for not a bad price either. The size of the motherboard looks nice and tidy too. Thanks for the exclusive Perifractic.
Love the channel. Keep up the good work guys
When I saw this from RPI Foundation in my inbox this morning, I was really excited. Reminds me so much of the old days when everything was inside the keyboard. The only thing it's missing is a power button 😥
The keyboard has a soft power key combination.
Loved the look of the C64 version you, they all were brilliant but the C64 one had by far the best look.
well done.
Great video as always. Do you have any thoughts on the MiSTer FPGA? Would be great to see on your channel.
Thanks! For some reason it didn't appeal to me the way this one does...
Pretty cool kit, thanks for the review. It is a great price to be sure, and enough built in features to be useful out of the box. A laptop version couldn't be far behind. I could see these being great for young children as a first computer as well.
I love this... Amiga Emulation Time.... gonna give me some extra things to do over winter in the upper midwest.
Have fun!
I never knew it but it seems as if I need this. (sry for my English) Also: I didn't knew you were doing all the music! Super cool! Love y'all!

@@gerald8573 You are welcome!
The renderings of Retro-themed Pi-400's were great. Makes me wonder how it would look in the brushed stainless and black to a Ti-99/4A
Really nice review. Looks like a really nice little computer. Since I killed my Pi-Zero, I have been looking for a new Pi project... I think I just found it.
Thanks to all the Fractics!
Thanks! Glad you liked the review.
Sweet DHL delivered it, nice to see the company I work for getting exposure
They ship a lot of my international stuff, including from China in 48 hours!
I think it’s a super cool idea. I’m half inclined to pick one up myself
your Music is awesome once i listen to hit back the 80's to me

Man I love this. It's like a moden c64, with those books.
Ahh the C-64! LOL Love the mock-up. Reminds me of my BBS days.
Love the Raspberry Pi store in Cambridge which was opened up shortly after Maplin closed.
Really nice form factor! Even the PCB shape (and location of ports) could be good for other applications. But hey, the design with the keyboard is actually really spot on in my opinion. PS. More Lizzyfractic ;-)
Buddy of mine got a working Vectrex, it’s a blast!
