See a variety of invisible zipper feet in a variety of widths and why you might want a heavy weight invisible zipper! Then I'm sharing my easy full-proof invisible zipper technique that works every time! Avoid fighting with the invisible zipper to keep it from pushing away from the edge of the fabric as you sew. Plus, if you're sewing a zipper through a waist seam, see how easy it is to be assured that the seam will match perfectly when the zipper is zipped up... EVERY TIME!

    All zippers are in a seam , even if it is separating. I use to love the invisible feet with the grooves , misplaced mine a long time ago..probably lost in the sewing room!!!I have been doing this method for more than 30 years, perfect every time , at the seam, top and bottom. I also follow You Tuber "Janine SEWs, she said she was struggling with Invisible zippers, I wrote out as best I could these same instructions...... now I can refer her back to you!!! Thank you for great instructions.

      I think it's a practice thing... I had to do a lot of zippers before they started coming out like this one! ...Basting the zipper to the edge really helps. Someone else commented that they use Wonder Tape to stitch the zipper in place... That works well too! Thanks for watching

    Great instruction. I use longer zippers than the length needed. It helps zipping closed without having trouble with the pull and the stop at the end. I cut it when no longer needed. In the absence of an invisible zipper foot, a piping foot may help. There are several sizes that would suit different zipper teeth sizes. I have a low shank Huskvarna with the regular zipper foot, the invisible zipper foot ( probably the same you had on your Pfaaff) and a narrow zipper foot, quite special. The latter is long, about 1.5" long, with openings ( instead of closed holes ) on opposite sides.I switch the foot front to back to sew the appropriate side of the zipper. The opening makes it possible for the needle tonbe moved closer to the teeth. The longer foot also holds the zipper and fabric longer together.

    There is an old UA-cam video by Kenneth D King where he inserts an invisible zipper by basting first (he does it by hand) and then sews with a regular zipper foot. So, you're in illustrious company. He has a different method for eliminating the little bubble at the bottom of the zipper. Check it out.

      I Love Kenneth King!... Back in the day before I was "J Stern Designs" I worked at a sewing store, Manchester Sewing, I was so lucky to work there... We had all the amazing talented sewing educators come to do events. I got to meet him and many others... When the store went out of business in 2007, I took that as a sign that I needed to get my butt in gear and start making my own patterns and J Stern Designs was launched with my original Tee Pattern, Misses' & Women's Jeans, A Shirt with Two Collars and a Peplum & Khaki Pants! A few other subscribers have commented about his technique using a 5-groove pintuck foot ... I may go check that out! Thanks for watching

    I baste my invisible zippers in too. I just have one extra step where you have to match the seams. I baste the first side down, match up the second side and then I baste a 2cm stitch line right along where the crossing seam is, so then the presser foot can't push the fabric out of alignment when you go back to stitch from the top. I love your wave the teeth in front of you tip as I have often had too unpick the zipper because of a twist when I didn't check I had it lined up properly.

    A high shank zig-zag machine is a little bit of an oddball, so it's not surprising that some of those feet didn't work. In particular, many high shank feet are engineered so that they interact with the feed dog layouts that are common on straight stitch machines rather than the layouts that are necessitated by a zig-zag machine. So even if the needle does line up with the hole/slot in the foot, the fabric feeding won't be optimal and you'll get issues like the puckering that you saw with that adjustable foot. Basically the feed dogs can only pull the fabric in places where there's both a feed dog at the bottom (obviously) and some part of the presser foot at the top (which people often don't consider).

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you for sharing this info!! I "knew" that contact with the presser foot with the feed dogs is important... but I definitely got lost in the weeds here... I was so focused on getting the foot to work with the zipper teeth that I forgot to consider the surface space. Thanks for watching too!

    This was very helpful to learn how to use the zipper foot that came with the machine to do invisible zippers. Is your Janome a high or low shank? I understand there is an adapter you can get if your machine is high shank you put on it and then the low shank feet work with it.

    • @JSternDesigns

      Thanks so much... My Janome is a high shank machine. It's not that the foot doesn't fit vertically... it's that the hole for the needle to sew into is too far forward... My needle hits the metal in front of the hole. Thanks for watching too!

    Thank you for the tips! I've only tried my hands on an invisible zipper once with a machine, and ended up going over it again by hand to get close enough 🤣
    But I've got one I'm planning on practising with before starting project no. 2. That one is a skirt in two layers of voile + and underskirt. I might go for a light poplin for the underskirt, I don't want it too heavy or stiff, but also to ensure no see-through as voile is quite sheer. Would you recommend to reinforce the seam allowance when working with two layers? If so, both layers or just the one closest to the zip? I was planning on flatlining the two layers in any case, but if you have any tips it would be very much appreciated!

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Місяць тому +1

      That sounds like a pretty skirt! I would do a test zipper on two layers of voile with fusible interfacing along the edges on the layer next to the zipper. Because it's such sheer fabric, treat the two layers like they are one fabric....you can clean finish the edges together down past where the zipper will end (Then finish the rest of the side seams individually. Clip the seam allowances under the zipper so you can sew the rest of the side seams individually so each layer has it's own seam. Then you can use the lining to finish the inside of the zipper... I would use something like rayon or silk to line this skirt... I think a poplin might be a little stiff. (Plus rayon or silk lining will feel amazing against your skin and it's breathable! Hope this helps, thanks for watching

      @@JSternDesigns Thank you so much 🙏 I'm quite new to sewing, and have just had a vague idea of how to execute this project. Knowing it will definitely be more involved than initially thought might be one of the reasons I've been apprehensive about getting started. Your tips has been copied for availability!
      I'm recreating a version of a boho skirt I had some years back, which was also in a really light, sheer fabric. It was full length, double layer with a knee length underskirt. All in cotton I believe. But silk is definitely an option as well! If only knee length the cost would be tolerable as well. Now hopefully I can get this finished while it's still summer and I can wear it, lol!

    I'm sorry to throw shade on your tutorial, but this isn't the best way to sew an invisible zipper. I always sew the seam below the zipper first, then install the zipper. It's easier, faster, and practically foolproof with no little divot or pucker at the end of the zipper. Also, I would recommend using some type of fusible interfacing on the fabric where the zipper will go to prevent the fabric from puckering as it did on your sample. Here's a link to a good tutorial on installing a zipper this way. You can sliw the playback speed if you need to. ua-cam.com/video/YMQXX2TXaqQ/v-deo.html&si=lr8KjjKaOvCrsMUX

      You're not throwing shade on it! You're expressing your opinion which I love and respect. I did get a pucker in the first sample I did because I sewed 1/16" deeper than the actual seam while finishing it as an after thought for the photo. The sample I did on camera does not have a pucker. I think the best way to insert a zipper is the method that works best for you. Thanks for watching!
