  • Although technically Thief The Dark Project is a stealth video game, it has such a powerful ambient soundtrack that it almost makes it a horror game. For the composition of the music, the developers have experimented with all kinds of strange sounds such as overwhelming screams and everyday sounds that further reinforce the dark atmosphere of the game based on a fictional context that mixes Middle Ages-like dark fantasy and the Industrial Revolution.

Eric Brosius is so talented. This game has the most extraordinary soundtrack compared to anything else I have experienced in my 25 year gaming history.

Chilling, intriguing, mysteriously foreboding and sometimes downright scary. What a masterpiece, the one and only Thief The Dark Project

This game and System Shock 2 has THE BEST pc games sound design in 90's.
No Half Life, no Unreal or Quakes, but games from Looking Glass Studios

For me Half-Life one is up there with the ambient sounds. Although it weighs on minimalism and realism.

Add Arx Fatalis to that list, as well (although it's later than 90s)

Probably the only game(Thief 1 and 2) that has such realistic sounds that made you think you're actually there. It really enhanced the overall experience, even footsteps were a horror to me, such sounds were scary because you think you were actually there. l don't remember well but the AI had freedom in most areas so the game didn't felt scripted or a 'zoo', you had to be careful when you come back to an area or you had to lose your trail first before moving forward but even then, you had to be cautious.
Both horror and stealth games needed this(the AI being able to move freely and search) but most importantly, both need this kind of sound design, the sound design where you literally, know where is someone just by the sound they make.
l don't know if it is possible to make such accurate sound design in games, like Unity for instance. l don't mean the ambience, l mean the sound designs, water splashes, footsteps, screams of characters(not ambient, part of the game music).

@@TudorTulok Thief and some other really unique games that especially struck to me, can sometimes give me that "push" to write but all just devolves to wishful thinking if action isn't taken(especially when someone doesn't have experience on designing). Like, wanting a similar experience to Thief when it comes to its game and sound design.
Though, sharing opinions can help, depending on circumstances.

Game is really a something, I just wish that they took different path in map/level design, it's to much maze like with no real point, only loot. So I would like more focus on story and better maps, those dark streets with all this audio, men.....

I have! I've played through all 3 of the original games, plus the 1 reboot, and I've yet to find another game with as good of a soundtrack or world immersion. I'm so glad that there are still other people who appreciate the games as much as they deserve to be C:

Even after a quarter century of gaming nothing ever came remotely as close to the impact this game has had on me. Thief The Dark Project was the Thus Spoke Zarathustra of digital, interactive art. It's like a dark force of nature, a tidal wave that carries you away and when you emerge on the other side, you come out a different person. Forever changed, transformed, ascended.

You ever notice how the bow and arrow setup that Garrett has in this covert art has like, a comically short draw length? Like look at it: it's fully drawn, but his bow arm is bent and his string arm isn't even fully cocked. How do you properly aim that thing? Even if you were doing a chest draw (like if you were lying prone) it would be impossible. I guess maybe the fire arrow could be any length since it flies straight regardless.

When you enter the hammerite chapel in the mines where you get holy water font and then it transitions into the hammerite factory floor. Had a great time blasting those undead creatures with unlimited supply of holy water from the font.
