Being from Brazil myself, I laughed for a whole minute at that "taking hostages with the Light Phaser" stuff XD
What I,m from Brazil
LOL
brazil is the place of blue Light Phaser or not?
2:08 "...Gunpei Yokoi of Virtual Boy fame..." Oh, that is COLD! XD
Paint ball was an awesome light gun game on the nes... awww the memories. The videos are awesome and the comments are hilarious love it
When I played To the Earth as a kid I would sit right next to the TV and have my zapper almost touching the screen :) cheating but it was fun at the time. Good memories
you guys forgot to show "chiller" and "baby boomer" on the NES
It is in fact compatible with the light phaser.
I always wondered why games such as: duck hunt & yoshi's safari wasn't available on the Wii through virtual console, to me these were wasted opportunities since the technology was there
For Sega's safari hunt game, there's just a tiny bit more for interactivity not mentioned. Aside from being able to shoot any animal you want in the game, in one of the stages, you can shoot the apples off the trees.
That hostage in Brazil comment was hilarious. I'll have to look that up.
haha yeah, it cracked me up so much when that came out of nowhere.
True story, and quite odd. Necessity is the mother of invention.
I like the click on the zapper. It kind of makes up for the fact that the gun has no recoil. It gave the thing a little jolt when you clicked it that made it feel like something was happening. I don't know if that was the intention, but it seems plausible. The click is definitely intentional, whatever the reason for it's existence.
That is very true. The click made it feel like you were actually shooting something. It made the games more immersive. But that clickiness also made it not ideal to play at night while others were sleeping. But that's also true when firing real guns as well.
how come the zapper dont work on 1080p tvs
The Zapper has a trigger mechanism with extra levers and springs just to increase the trigger pull and caused louder click. So yes, that was intentional! The Sega Phaser pushed the switch directly so it was better for rapid fire. I guess the NES was more tactile while the Sega was more functional.
@@Mariofans-gn1lu You can find videos and articles on the reason, but the simple answer is that newer TVs work completely different from old TVs and the guns were specifically designed to work with old TV technology.
@villahed94 I do not even own a Model 2. All Genesis audio comes from my Genesis model 1 which I purchased at launch.
Jimmy Junior Jackoff. Gonna have to remember that one. :)
of all reviewers on earth, my upmost respect goes out toward these 4 youtube channel reviews, AND in this order:
4) MetalJesusRocks
3) Wiiviewer
2) AVGN
1) Game Sack
NO EXCEPTIONS!
The sega light gun, was made to look like the one in the inspiration for zillion, which was manga or anime. Zillion 1 and 2 were master system games.
When I was a kid my friend brought his master system phaser out to play down by the shops. The police were phoned and we ended up surrounded by armed police!
(In England as well so armed police aren't as easy to come by)
🐂💩
@@CyberSlunk believe what u like, it happened lol!
This is the first place I've ever heard Operation Wolf on the Master System referred to as particularly bad! I always thought it was a great conversion - we used to put the control pad on the floor and step on it to launch grenades.
08:35 seriously😂😂😂😂? Imagine you would release this today😂😂
Damn, i want a new light gun for PS5/XboxSeX/XSS/NS with HD/4K Support. G- Con Bullseye!! What can be done to contact the ex Light Gun pioneers of the good old days (Nintendo, Namco, Sega, Konami)?😢
How much money would be required to make it possible? Maybe Kickstarter?
@VideoGamePolak Because we are. We know about it and we don't like it. We're trying to be better. I blame Dave. :)
my favorite episode! I am going to make a wallpaper of the frame where you two pose with two guns each =)
Duck Hunt, Wild Gunman and Hogan’s Alley were the most solid light gun games in games in my opinion.
The zapper actually has two firing modes, I recently learned while playing through the library in fpga. Games like "baby boomer" "hit marmot" "Hogan's alley" "laser invasion" have this mode, where you half-hold the trigger before it hits the spring, and it will fire like a machine gun! Wish they would have added that to other games like operation wolf!. That may have actually made the game playable.
Man, I started playing Duck Hunt at my grandpa's this past Thanksgiving. It was my light gun debut, and I actually had a blast. Maybe it was because I didn't expect much, but I played so much my finger was sore. lol.
7:55 - Or sometimes it's "TIIIIIIIIII-TO" pronounced by a young Japanese girl
Fun fact: The Sega light phaser was modeled after the guns they use in the anime cartoon Red Photon Zillion
Sloppy Joe was about to mention the same thing.. also the two Zillion games on the Master System have the gun in them :)
The reason why Operation Wolf has more "flicker" on Sega is probably because the Sega Light Phaser operates differently from the Zapper. When you pull the trigger the Zapper makes the screen dark for one frame, and in the second frame a white box is drawn over the target, allowing the Zapper to detect a hit. The Phaser on the other hand makes the whole screen white, and times how long it takes for the scanning beam of the TV to be detected by the Phaser. Although the screen is white for only one frame it's enough to cause a noticeable flicker.
What an amazing note! How did you know that?
I was searching the Light Phaser operation, but I've found nothing...
Fábio Pio Marques Filho Just do a quick Google search.

Well we got you to comment on a few of our videos. I'd call it a success!
Ah, the Zapper sections in Bayou Billy were my favorite part of the game. So much fun...
love them both great episode.
I’m Here In 2020 😉
I have a special Megadrive II Lethal Enforcers gun. it looks badass compared to the one that came with the game. But it barely works. I might take it apart and use it for role-playing. But then again I know only one other person who has one of these so it might be rare xD
I DON'T APPROVE OF ORGANIZED CRIME!" XD
I don't think we should view Gunpei Yokoi as just "The Virtual Boy" guy. He created the Game Boy & Metroid. I think we can let him slide on that one failure known as the Virtual Boy.
Great Video. I never could get rambo 3 to work right. Like a version of the game was flawed or something. Yet my phaser works fine with my other games. Just Rambo 3 seems like every shot misses.
Man, whatever happened with lightgun shooters? Back then everybody had them. I guess the Wii brought them back a little but it didn't last... Never tried the Master System zapper but the gangster game looks fun.
+Heavy T the death of skill based gaming, for one. Light gun shooting is a test of skill. Most light gun games were based on the idea that a single round lasted mere seconds and you immediately received a report as to how you did. That's just not the way games are made any more. People want to sit down and play a game for hours, now, and follow a story. they don't like setbacks. Light gun games just aren't conducive to this style of gaming.
I am surprised you guys don't have a video all about light gun shooters. It would be great to see your take on them. I am talking games like Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, Ghost Squad, and many more. Heck the Wii has some of the best light gun shooters on the system. Some real hidden gems like Gunslingers which has a pretty cool cell shaded artstyle, and very fun light gun gameplay. Man the Wiimote sure was great for those kinds of games.
They do now :D
"But the enemy is going balls-out trying to kill the medic." I lol'd
I love the sound effects when you put carts in... They're so satisfying
The way those light guns work is actualy simple, instead a crt light tracking timing system, it just works with flashing white square blocks it a frame order along with a black frame for calibration and to avoid cheating using a light bulb, for example, duck 1 has a white square at a specific timing (let's say 1 to 5 ns) but also duck 2 has a white square with a specific timing( let's say 6 to 10 ns) etc,,so if the timing of the recieved light is matching or in between those timings it knows wich duck you did hit, this way the position can be determined even if 2 ducks fly's at the same position to overlaps eachother because of the timing differences between those 2 ducks.
johneygd That's the way the Zapper works. The Light Phaser works based on the scanlines of the TV as they draw. It flashes 1 white frame (no black, no target frames). It times how long it takes before it sees white and figures out if there is a viable target in that area.
Duck Hunt in nice and all but it doesn't compete with the great shooting games by SEGA, after all they made Virtua Cop and House of the Dead.
I obviously love Sega a lot, but I think the design of the NES Zapper is just more iconic.
I can't agree with the total burying of Laser Ghost. Here in Europe, it is widely considered a classic, and one of the greatest light phaser games ever made. It's unique and incredibly creepy. Any American with an SMS should import it. It's still fairly cheap despite being slightly on the uncommon side.
as well as the toys he made for nintendo such as that one quickdraw toy with the collapsing cowboy figure which you had to shoot at a sensor.
Even as an admitted Nintendo fanboy like Mr. Dave here; it seems like Sega had a better handle on the technology in the 8 bit era. They obviously believed in it a lot more. Both of the 16 bit light guns like total shit to me, tbh. Never liked the few NES Zapper games but, I kinda would like to play some of these Light Phaser games
and this is true since the original arcade game consisted of a joystick and 3 buttons (each button represented a bank window)
Oooo Man! Can't believe I just saw someone holding hostages in Brazil using the Light Phaser Gun. Maybe if they had a nerd nearby who knew what it was they could have told the police it was fake.
@weirdproq1 Nope! Bank Panic does not use the Light Phaser.
Its not a stupid regulation for zappers or toy guns to have orange caps or bright colous. This past year a child in America was killed by the police because he had an air soft gun that lacked an orange cap. And that is just one example of countless other incidents. It makes sense guys to distinguish a toy gun from a real one...
+Stringer Bell I should paint my real gun orange, then. :D
Yea problem is that there have been people who paint real guns with orange to make them look like toys. Simply put, anything the government does to try to get toy guns to not look real do not work with 1 exception which are the clear plastic airsoft guns
Joe Digger
That is how it is in my country. Toy guns either look like nerf guns or off the set of Star Wars. So there is no confusion at all. You cant paint a Nerf gun and rob a bank.
Nobody beats the Zapper.
There was one other system that made light gun games in that era, the Atari 7800, and based on the premier light gun game, Crossbow, it's one (and possibly the only) category that the 7800 outshines outshines the Master System and NES. Barnyard Blaster was kind of garbage, but I heard Meltdown was good too. Since the 7800 can play 2600 games, and no light gun was made until the 7800 era by Atari, Sentinel is a good game for the 2600 and should be considered a 7800 game for the purposes of this review. Add the third 7800 segment!!!!!!
Those Brazilians and there guns. lol Please tell that criminal the old saying "Guns don't kill people...... and neither does a zapper!" Big fan of your playlists. I put them on and play Fight Night Champion and you keep distracting me (ouch) :)
What guns? Guns are illegal in Brazil :P
I've found that every zapper I've had my hands on tends to have differing levels of accuracy. The Sega light gun not so much. Not saying Nintendo is of lower quality than Sega, but draw your own conclusions.
I've been trying to find out what track plays during the credits, and I know it says Mushihimesama but going through the OST via UA-cam still couldn't find it.
I missed the first two minutes of the rally video while I got beans, an apple and some peanut butter because fuck rally games. I paused this video to watched the whole thing because light gun games kick ass instead of sucking it. Gumshoe is awesome. When I saw the Back to the future clip I'm laughing at how shit the graphics are in their version of 2015. Suck it McFly you'll never amount to anything and neither will your arcade cabinets! If I was a tasteless piece of shit I'd say that we all know a stunt double was needed for that scene.
Hey Joe at Game Sack, have you ever considered acting for real? Your hits that you absorbed from David White were so dead on it's not even funny, but it was because I just fell off my computer chair from laughing so hard!!! As always guys great job and thank you for informing me and everyone else with all the greatness that the 8 and 16 bit consoles and games had to offer! :)
I have to agree. While I generally preferred my NES over the Sega, shooting the boss of Gangster Town in the face and the balls simultaneously is an important and formative memory from my youth, and is something that Nintendon't. The Sega light phaser simply ruled.
I play nes zapper that I play was Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Wild Gunman and Operation Wolf. Even great light phaser game master system was Wanted and Rambo 3
Call it Zapper, Light Phaser, Menacer or Super Scope, all of them were swindles. You'd buy the damn thing and then you couldn't find more than 10 games that used the stupid thing in the rest of the system's lifespan.
What is the complete name of the song played during the credits? I searched everywhere for Mushihimesama and found lots of songs, but couldn't find this particular song played on the video, can you guys please tell me? Thanks a lot!
Pleas help I have a question I have some light gun games for the MS they all load my gun only seems to work on some of my light gun games like gangster town works great but one in particular rescue mission I cant seem to kill the guy on the start menu to pick a level why is that every other game I can see it hitting things but not in rescue mission please don't ask if I'm playing on a CRT I have it hooked up to one I already know it's required
"They say it had to have orange or some crap"
I've seen a gaggle of officers show up guns drawn on s group of ten year olds who had pulled the little orange tip of their toy gun lol.
Oh course,in their defence,it did look real.
Thank God no one was hurt.
Space Gun was actually an arcade game, following the line of Operation Wolf and Operation Thunderbolt... But this time in space. Not the best game in the series though.
Thanks to the nintendos monopoly, in mexico and texas it was to hard to find consoles and games from sega... only i saw one master system in my life. I have the light phaser only. And with genesis the same problem here. Too hard to find games... thank you nintendo....
The Nintendo zapper is the reason I now collect guns... actually it's not, Its all Metal Gear's fault 😝
You seemed to have missed my favorite NES light gun game. Barker Bill's Trick Shooting!
Guys a Justifier Genesis gun , can be used as a second Light phaser for Ganster Town? you know, as the controllers
Gumshoe is the worst Zapper game I've ever played. I liked the diamond music for some reason though.
Woah, blast from the past.
You guy's have really improved over the years!
Orange one looks cooler to me it my make it look faker but it the orange makes it look like a gun from galactica but hey thts just how I feel
I played assaults city and eagerly await it's sequel. Pepper city. (Sorry for that)
Operation wolf wasn't released in the US? I could have sworn I had it though...
Binary search algorithm. Targets are not transforming into white squares at same time, but in a row. When you pull trigger and there are more than one target, for example, left and right, only left target lights, and right one doesn't. But you were aiming at the right target, so console receives "missed" signal from gun, and it knows that you missed left target. But then right one lights up and now console receives "hit" signal from gun, and it knows that you hit right target :)
And yes, I searched the comments, no mention of the "word" 7800 until I posted it.
If I didn't know any better I'd say these guys don't like the NES that much.
I was actually thinking of a video with that style, yet with changes.
For example: the pistols would have "flamethrower modes", only accessible through getting the upgrade when it spawns, and stays with whoever gets it until they get enough kills, usually half or the complete amount of players there are within the game. Another change would be the big guns have upgrades to them, a scope upgrade, for one example.
The no love for laser ghost shocked me. It's all subjective though. Perhaps it's my nostalgia for the game that blinds me. A kid of 5 being given an SMS 2 one Christmas, shortly after that getting the game. Man it was creepy, and gave me nightmares.
Spacegun! I totally forgot about that game. I had it, but what I didn't have was the friggin' gun. So I tried my 8 year old best, to beat it with the regular controller...
Sometimes remember these days and wonder, where my enthuisasm has gone to...
Never played Freedom Force, but I recognize the boss music from Blaster Master. Goddamn Sunsoft, always recycling shit. They make one really good game then milk it. At least Blaster Master is still awesome.
hi dave i am lazy too and i figured out on my nintendo zapper i dont have to depress the trigger the entire way. it will fire without even clicking and is much faster to rapid fire and conserves my energy too.
I think my sega phaser is a bit broken it's inaccurate and you have to aim to the left.
Gunman was also an arcade style game similiar to laserdisc but instead of Disc it used VHS Movie which was Projected search for "Wild Gunamn 1974" and you will see what i mean. This was released in the era of Pong just imagine that
One reviewer said Operation Wolf is quite good on NES, then the one reviewing the SMS version said the NES version is bad, haha. Either way I actually picked up the PSVR remake, and its pretty fun! I want to play some of the SMS light gun games as I have only played a few NES zapper ones.
Based on this review, I also like the Light Phaser games more overall.
Dang you Sega you may have won the battle but you have not won the war.....Wait is Sega still alive today? Just alittle poke at you Joe for being a Sega fanboy lol
Just because we are brazillians dont mean that we make hostages every where i just do that when i am hungry. just kiddin but this guy is a legend on brazil man
Gangster Town was by FAR the best gun game of the 8-bit generation!
8:34 should I feel bad for laughing at that?
Mushihime, TF IV, Batman and Alien 3 music in one single video? These guys know great videogame music, no doubt!
Specially Joe.
Do you still get revenue from these old videos? If not I'll skip the ads lol
@MrGameSack try playing Mechanized Attack with the NES controller-that's the only way I've ever played it, and it's really fun and accurate!
Wait there are newer light guns? Unless you mean the Wii I'm confused
ha! "Laser Ghost" is the best name for a game ever. What the heck does it even mean?
The Atari 7800 had some boring light gun games, such as Barnyard Blaster. Most people would rather do their taxes than play that game.
I know these guns use light to detect if they hit something, but how do they detect what you shot at?
Plus review the Snes Bazooka.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but the original version of the light gun called the beam gun actually an old west revolver.
I like operation wolf. Its easier with a controller tho on the nes. Good vid. Seen some nes zapper games I got to check out
You probably got the pad version ( even if you have the light gun insert ).
May the cart was switched.
the Music of operation wolf is like helicopters boom bang boom
One SEGA game you missed was MISSLE DEFENSE 3-D
Ya gotta use your hands that's like a babies toy best Bttf movie
Im late but did yall do a review on the SNES Scope.
I remember that they hardly work even when they’re new. 😕
Are you killing Freiza in assault city? And that dual light gun action in gamgster town. HOLY AWESOMENESS!! I only had duck hunt so seeing this and the shooters on genesis/super nes was cool. I think they'd be pretty awesome party games if you had a mega crt screen (.... until converters are flawless that is). Great vid
That damn zapper was too loud to play lightgun games while my parents were asleep, curse you zapper!
