    When i first started playing, the 5th string being tuned to 4 steps instead of 5 always bugged me. Until i started seeing how it impacted chord shapes, then it became very interesting. Because it forced me to understand that minor and major shapes are just 1 step away from each other

    Hi Justin, Thank you again for an amazing lesson. And I also wanted to let you know that this video is not showing up on your channel for some reason. Could only access it by clicking on the 'first' part at the end.

      Sure you can! Just keep working at it and make sure your guitar is set up properly. It’s difficult to make barre chords if the guitar is hard to fret.

      Are you playing on acoustic?
      Barres are easier to learn on electric (I'm doing it now--I started playing six months ago and when I got my electric last month I could instantly barre).

    Why do you have to mute the 6th string? The G note is in the key of C, isn't it?

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  9 місяців тому

      In the vast majority of cases you want the root note to be the lowest note you hear. Also, too many low notes makes the sound muddy and unclear. There are playing techniques where the bass note alternates between string 5 (root) and string 6. But for general strumming mute it / don't hit it. After two years I can say I know notes, chords and can follow along with a few tabbed songs or UA-cam how-to's if I study long enough. But if someone asked can I play guitar I'd say no. I couldn't play a tune somebody requested. Isn't that the definition of somebody that can "play" the guitar, pick it up and find the right notes?. At what point do you say you can play?
