  • How I ruined my Best Friend's Hair - in an 8 hour makeover process.
I won't be linking any of the products just because this was a massive learning curve for me and I wasn't overly satisfied with my technique or the products used. Some products do need practise and trial and error and that's what this process was for me.
Jenny's hair miraculously still remained intact and healthy and whilst the overall end result wasn't terrible, we can always aim for better.
Thats what I'll be focusing on next year.

You have such a beautiful friendship. She is so patient and I love how she's just giggling through it and totally fine. It didn't turn out as badly as it sounded like it would. I do see the yellow too though, maybe it shows up in certain lighting. Her hair still looks remarkably healthy even after tossing everything but the kitchen sink at it!

As a hairstylist i had this case of hair more than once!
The key solution in my cases were heat plus 40 volume developer!
It's scary, i know but it works
Just try to be careful and check the hair frequently

As a hairdresser who does a lot of blondes… care products and waterquality is everything! If they are not using great product you can’t get great results. A few things to help you… for your friend… sulfate and paraben free products (if you can find it a metal detox line to start en get all the previous buildup out) and waterfilters. For u, try washing her first with a detox and conditioning. Then dry straight. That way your special comb Will be easier to work with as well. You did everything you could! And did it Well! So learn from this and you’ll go far!

Yes it’s the one step I neglected. We have hard water here with lots of metals and I have a feeling it greatly affected the hair transformation. I’ll start with a detox next time

The thing about high lift is it’s not really a combination of bleach and color. It’s just a highly ammoniated color that lifts a bit more than regular permanent color. It really only works best when someone wants warmth or not a lot of change. Even with natural level 7-8 it can still end up a 9 gold. Not my favorite for anyone who wants to be blonde or icy.

Stella, this is a shot-in-the-dark, but I have a theory. I wonder if Jenny has hard water at her place. I bleach my hair at home, and I have fine hair that's around a level 7 naturally, and I find that not only does it take like 30 or 40 volume on my virgin hair to get to bright blonde, but that once I achieve it, it starts to yellow within a few days, and my theory is that it's the minerals in my water supply. It's a well. The water tastes amazing, since it's mineral water essentially, but I read once that certain minerals can yellow blond/e hair. I always use the same products to bleach my hair, and as my hair grows out, the hair that was bleached longest ago at the ends begins to look much yellower than the roots. Maybe this is the case with Jenny, or maybe it's just stubborn natural pigment. Just a thought. I might be way off base. Regardless, situations such as these can't be helped. All professionals have tough cases sometimes. I admire your honesty about this. You're a professional, but you're still learning too, as we all are, and at least you have the humility to admit that sometimes you try, and the result isn't what you want.

I live in the Bronx NYC and I have hard water because our pipes were changed to copper and copper turns green when oxidized, NYC used to have galvanized steel in the main line of the street and sewer and iron pipes throughout the house in the 1900s, when pipes were installed and my hair was fine up until a decade ago when we installed the copper😢, my hair is a dark golden blonde beautiful color at first and then actually darkens and looks muddy afterwards because of the water, I actually had to go lighter when dying my hair because of this it also causes frizziness and damage to the hair combine it with humidity and it leaves me eith very few good hair dyes i understand you completely☹️

Truly a game changer for me, who has to deal with extremely resistant, level 1-3, coarse hair clients (mother in law 😭) who wants icy platinum, guy tang mydentity big 9 lightener is a game changer. Love blondme but this truly gets the hair to a clean level 10. I do fine sections in foils and saturate good. Trust me it truly is crazy the difference. I used to get stuck at levels 7-8 with other bleaches but the big 9 and 20 vol? Yeah it gives that extra push you need!

I never tried his! They unfortunately don’t ship to Malta and I tend to be limited to what I have here. Schwarzkopf has always worked well for me but this time it just wasn’t getting me any lift whatsoever and I didn’t want to increase the volume since her hair is already lightened

My very worst salon experience was about a year ago. To preface, I've always bleached and colored my own hair, since middle school. I decided I wanted to go from purple&blue, to black and white split dye. Half and half. It was beautiful and my favorite hair I've ever had! Well I had to find a new stylist. I loved her, she was so sweet. But she overlapped while doing a root touch up, and my poor white hair broke off and fell to the floor. It was only a couple inches long on my right side. It looks like I'm growing out a side shave. So I've been getting micro keratin fusion extensions on that side, until it grows back. 😢

Yes really! Like you, I am a wig specialist and hair replacement specialist. Our salon is also considered full service. My boss is very good when it comes to this stuff and trained all of us girls and myself and another one of my coworkers have very resistant hair and we use 10 volume with high lift and it comes out beautifully and the reason being is the longer you let it sit the better off you are and you can add a little bit of heat to it, and it’ll come up perfectly. We also use the high lift on the wigs to test to see how it would work because we all know bleaching away never works out beautifully. But the lower number volume you use with the high Lift. the better off you are. And I’m so excited that you actually saw my comment and commented back. I’ve been watching your videos for years and I absolutely love your channel and you’re one of the main reason why I got into wanting to work with wigs

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is important to see and acknowledge that things can just go wrong. I think this is not only important for stylists but also for all the DIYers that happen to mess up their hair even though they techniqually did everything right.
I used to use Wella Blondor in the past and always needed to use it with 30 volume developer to get my hair lifted light enough. When I heard that my level of depth should be lifting nicely with 20 or even 10 volume, I was like "Oh woah, I'm gonna try that!" and guess what, my roots looked like I just used a cheap blonde box dye (not bleach, color), it was not even an entire shade lighter and it was crazy yellow. My hair isn't dark enough to lift orange, but it was almost like the bleach had just removed the top layer of pigment and revealed the underlying pigments instead of melting also those. With BlondMe I can use 7 or even 6 volume developer and get a great result easily.
What I learned in the past is, that my hair, even though it is rather fine and not dark at all (between level 7 and 8), does not lift as easily as one might think. My hair can also take a lot especially considered it's on the fine side and naturally wavy. I have bleached coarse hair and stick straight thick hair and always got the results that I did anticipate to get, but my hair behaves differently. I had to learn that the hard way. So I am especially glad to made that video to show other people that something like this exists.
BTW: Even I with a lighter base can't use high lift blondes if I want a nice clear, cool toned blonde. I can use them to get to a bright and warm blonde, but NOT for a neutral-cool or cool result. (No matter if it's a 10, 11 or 12.)

  • @florenna
    @florenna 5 місяців тому +2

What an ordeal, but you both took it so well ;) I hate platinums and silvers too, but that's because I can't myself do any cool tones, I look like a ghost (mildly put), but warm tones are fine, so people going crazy to get rid of *any* yellow tones (after bleaching etc.) just baffle me ;) They actually suit me, even some orange tones do, but then it's not really socially acceptable to go around with that colour hair, it seems 😂

To rinse something off you need a solvent (for examples water, ethanol or acetone). Bleach is not a solvent so it's fair to say that it doesn't get rid of the metals but it definitely can still interact with them.
However, the product(s) of this (/these) interaction(s) is potentially still not rinsable with water

My sister has the same hair type as your friend has. It doesn't bleach well, it doesn't tone with non-permanent hair dyes. Once i bleached her hair with a very strong bleach and it did completely nothing. Nothing. I expected a lot of hair damage but her hair didn't change. I bought a lot of non-permanent toners to tone her hair after successful bleach and it did nothing too. Even if we are sisters our hair has many differences.

I am my hairdressers Guinea Pig.
I have had 3 Hairdressers since my 20's next year I am 59.
1st awesome at cutting not keen on colouring but had a apprentice who I met on his first day aged 16 what, a blast seeing him develop.
We coloured my hair grew my hair as he had phobia of doing dramatic change from long to short one day I went in and went cut it all off... That solved his phobia.
My 1st stylist left but I was in good hands my hairdresser a life long friend and has had many challanges as I grew my dark hair into natural white/silver... he was, a colour specialist and lordi he tried for fun to colour my hair but whatever he used colour just washed out but we had fun trying.
A sad day when he was snapped up by a London Salon 600 miles, away.
In comes my current hairdresser he works magic with scissors he knows my hair, understands, what I need it to do and factors my health issues that can make simple task of washing and drying impossible so often need to air dry.
Every cut I know if I want I can do with short hair 6 styles in a day if I want, my hair will sit perfectly every day until next cut which sometimes is 12 weeks apart if I am unwell... Yes it will be longer and thicker but I can still manage it.
Colour he tried for fun and yep it washes out straight away so I love and rock my white/silver but know when younger I had a blast with colour.
My hairdresser and not just hairdresser they are friends someone who I totally trust yes even times when things went oops it was fine at end of day as I went into a Guinea Pig day knowing it might be a oops, day.
My biggest advice is to find who you click with and that you both understand what you need of your hair and trust them it is a wonderful friendship to have in your life.
Stella that was a learning curve but your friend like I am with my hairdresser trusted you and will continue to trust you as you try again to get her hair to your level of perfection. 🥰

He always a 30 vol., I think. He also exprement with Keratin products to reduce the curls pattern and nop, just on my first wash, they still there and strong. I dont blame sometimes the haidresses on the end reasult, because we also sometimes dont tell them what are we using or how are we taking care of our hair and expect them to do a miracle.

Most (if not all) high lift colors don't have bleach in them. It's just color with a much higher ammonia concentrate which allows for it to lift more than the typical permanent color. That's why it is generally mixed with 40 vol to work. It will never get you to an icy blonde unless you're already super light. It's not strong enough to break through the warmth that it exposes. Also the scandinavian hairline technique is really only meant to be used on light NATURAL hair and has to be applied extremely meticulously. If you get even a little on the hair behind your part, it will turn orange because it's not saturated enough to fully lift which is likely why you had very light blonde at the front and the line of yellow behind it.

The only reasons I have run into with this same issue (highlifts are almost always a shit show Imo.)
Medications: especially diabetic or thyroid medication will make their hair turn neon yellow.
Mineral buildup/chlorene/Sun-in: if she swims a lot or the water in the area is treated. If she used a "natural at home lightening" system (bicarbonate mixed with x or lemon juice and sunlight). It seems the warm tones stick.

If you try again, maybe try Hair Buddha’s approach: counterintuitive, but use a lower volume bleach for longer. Try 10 volume because it’ll slowly yet effectively melt the orange and yellow pigments! (That’s what he says anyway lol)

14:45 She seemed to enjoy the result. And it really doesn't look damaged at all!
And yeah, she has wonder-woman-hair!!! Indestructible!!! Bleach is like water to her hair 😂😂
Her patients is nice. She trusts you, and I would have too. Cos, when you sit in a professionals chair and you are friends with them: Only a matter of time.

Try green to neutralize. When blue and violet don't work green does.

I’m scared it will leave behind a green pigment, blue and purples are slightly safer

Im scandinavian, and my hair is also funny af. It turns with the littlest bleach white ( not breaking tho ). But the second you put on toner my hair is orange XD Btw if you have hard water the iron can block bleach. Maybe she needs to have a filter on her water at home. Maybe the orange isnt pigment but instead iron in water that lays on top of her hair.

Not seen it all yet but soon as I saw ignora! It's random because I Trained it with it in 2002 lol and it is good. So I recently got their highlift tint instead of bleach and it wasn't as expected at all! Yet then tried colourissimo and although a pain to mix..I now use a massive paint brush 😂 it's great! So no more bleach 🥰 It's finding the right product and going with those and getting the experience with as many as possible to know the outcome. Basically the reason I hate changing dyes 😬 I only do my own now btw

Ten volume would have worked perfectly! My one coworker has very dark hair and I use highlift on her all the time to color her hair, and I always use hand volume and it comes out perfectly with no orange whatsoever. Or you could’ve done 15 volume by mixing 10 on the 20 together and it would’ve worked great.

Really??! I’ll try it on a mannequin first and see what happens!

    • @daniellesalvia7788
      @daniellesalvia7788 5 місяців тому

Trying it on a manikin is a lot different than trying it on somebody’s head as well. Because the heat from the persons head will affect the way that a lift versus trying it on a manikin. We do use it on wigs and Irish shop, but sometimes we have to use a little bit of heat to it. But it definitely does work. My boss is a big stickler about using low volume peroxides when doing color and we found that our shop, it always works best using a lower volume, especially with the high lift. I’m sorry I’m just very excited that you saw my comment and you actually responded and that’s probably why I’m repeating myself in the second comment.

I always wonder how that scandinavian hairline grows out. Does it Fall out quickly and is gone because it's mostly just Baby hairs? Does it create a really Hard edge right around the face?

    • @perrbearr1
      @perrbearr1 5 місяців тому +2

It absolutely creates a hard edge around the face which is why it's really only meant for people who are already very light. I would never ever do this technique on someone who wasn't a natural level 8+ ALL OVER their head, not just at the hairline. It's a technique that honestly has very few practical uses and I hate how prevalent it was for awhile. So many people stuck with an orange line around their forehead 🤦‍♀

You need to trust the process and have patience. It looks great, already, and it will look even better if you have patience to process it further in a month or two. I agree that a strand test is very useful but from what you mention it's not your fault as she's your friend and likely shared with you everything she had done before (and, likely had no hard to remove undesirable pigments).
The result turned out fantastic, but you have spent a lot of time on it to still have warmth around it.
She can likely use some pigmented styling product meanwhile, if she really wants that warmth concealed.
Looking forward what you do next. If it was ok to work without a strand test until now, it is VERY risky to do the same moving forward, sorry. Please show everybody how to do it safely when you see her in a month or two, a strand test (or more) will be very useful to let you know how far you can go removing the pigments that need to be gone while still retaining enough structure.
Enjoy a lovely holiday! Thanks for another year!
