    It appears that Harbor Freight went back to their original (more expensive) mechanism design with regards to your newest model wrench. My Pittsburgh passthrough ratchet which I bought 6 or 7 years ago (maybe even 8) has the same exact ratchet mechanism as your new one. Everything inside and out from the design, to the pawl, to the steel used for the direction selector is identical. It even disassembls the same way with the same snap ring. The only difference between my wrench and yours is that the handle is quite different. Mine is slightly offset and flattened (not tubular) with no "comfort" grip. The grip is all steel with form fitted finger grooves and black rubber enlayed where the palm of your hand would normally be. The sockets are the same except that the metric have nice ( acrylic?) blue paint and the SAE are red. Just thought I'd pass this along. Thanks for the review... nicely done.

    After this review and HF’s improvements, I think I’ll pick this set up. Thanks.

    About 6 months ago I purchased the GearWrench SAE/Metric pass through set. The fit, finish and quality appears to be top notch!!! Pass through is the only set I’ll ever need, Thanks Catus for all your reviews !!!

    I have a stubby flex head 19mm wrench that I use these sockets on and they work awesome when you need them

    I was puzzled by your last review of these sockets, thinking I had the Gen 1, but seeing them side by side I realize I have the Gen 2. (I've never had a problem with it reversing while being used.)

    That was my only set of tools I used for a long long time, along with the harbor freight ratchet wrenches and a tool called wrench sockets. I was able to do everything almost on my toyota truck.

      I’m a professional in the field (not a mechanic) and the Pittsburgh Pro series of hand tools always work very well for very cheap. You just have to replace the tools more often

    Modifying the bottom cover by adding hinges near the sockets could enable removal of the metric without spilling the SAE. Shims or spacers can make the hinge leafs flat.

    That would be Gen II and a Gen III I believe. I bought one of these sets many years ago which came in a molded case had a bit of an offset in the shorter handle with and overmold cushion grip. When you need them they are extremely handy, The Gen III seems a nicely designed length of ratchet but I think the slight offset was better in that with these wrenches you are often working with your knuckles very close to the item you are wrenching. For example if you are putting a nut on a carriage bolt coming through lumber your hand position as you tighten or loosen the nut is going to be scraping the surface of the board. Nice item.

    The problem with Pass-Through sockets is no one makes a organizer (socket rail) for them.
    The blow molded cases are only useful as marketing displays. They will eventually fail.

    I picked up the one with the horrible self reversing problem. It does it every single time I use the ratchet, so its gonna get a beating with a 2x4 I guess lol

    I use a tekton long reach flex head ratcheting 19mm wrench with the metric sockets, the wrench itself just sits in a junk drawer with all the standard sockets aswell

    👍 Cool Video. I liked seeing that. Most importantly thou... now that it is a better tool and it is made using a more expensive process, is it more expensive to buy? It would be a nice if they kept the price the same... Its a "Pitt" so the coupon will work, at least there's that...

    I think the reverse lever on the new one is plastic. It broke off of mine just this weekend. I exchanged it for the older style.

    Some things I would like to know I have some of these tools from other brands like craftsman and husky we do know this whole gammet is a gear wrench thing now the question is will this work with any of the other gear wrench stuff out there it sucks when life time warranty is dried up when the licenses make them for chain stores dried up so replacement stuff is hard to find I would go all out gear wrench but if this fits it ships
    Thank you in advance

    I had bought the last generation set twice, thinking I would use it. Both times the set just sat in the tool box taking up space. So, I exchanged them out. It's always in the back of my mind to get the set again anyway, just in case. My thoughts are on the Gearwrench version instead, though. So, my question is; have you reviewed the Gearwrench set, Cat, or can you do a comparison? Does anyone here have the Gearwrench version?

      @donaldhollums3278 4 роки тому

      Me too, I'm considering the Gearwrench version instead of another Pittsburgh version. I like how the Gearwrench version is available in a flex-head as well.

    • @maxw576
      @maxw576 4 роки тому

      FWIW, I have both and I use the Pittsburgh version more with a 19mm flex head gearwrench wrench. The hex head on the Pittsburgh is handy that way. The gearwrench/craftsmen passthru have more sizes and extensions.

    What size is the ratcheting portion of the ratchet? is it 13MM?

  • @1337penguinman

    I'm curious if these sockets would work with my 19mm Gearwrench? Would solve the issues with the ratchet.

    • @CatusMaximus

      That's the one small Saving Grace is that the sockets have the detent built into them not the ratchet so any 19 mm wrench or socket will work
