I bought a Craftsman pass through ratchet when they first came out. I've broken many ratchets by putting a breaker bar on it but never had the handle itself bend till I used the pass through. Needless to say I knew right away how strong they are. I still use my pass through set of ratchets nearly every time I need a hand tool.
Yup my craftsman max access, has lasted me 8 years one of the best tools I ever bought!
I like how the pass thru ratchet holding mechanism wraps around the socket firmly as opposed to a regular ratchet putting all its faith on a small anvil. It's crazy to me how the anvil ratchet is the "regular" one when you realize this tiny little detailed contrasting the two.
Dude, rule 1 in using pipe extension, is put pip all the way to rachet head.

@@casparv well it dosnt show that either, if you do it like that, you are putting All the force on one point, and thats why the handle starts to bend.

This was my thought to he seems to grab by hand at weird spot also on a few tests I've seen, maybe to make a certain brand look better or worse idk

Again, the way he is using the pipe, he is creating a bend with only 2 contact points, it's not the way to do it, and shows nothing, the force on the second point of contact, is HUGE, and evere handle where the ratchet is not total crap, WILL bend.
He is creating the failure point, by doing it this way.
This guys video quality and how he explains everything is great. Usually when you see smaller channels like this are very low quality and low budget but this couldn’t be any further from that

The pawl usually wedges in the sidewall and lets you lay some serious torque down and self destructs. Ratcheting wrenches will usually do the same, one and done with too much torque.
Another application for these, is using it on struts where you have to turn a bit and hold the threaded rod at the same time.
Would like to see compared to harbor freight and snap on pass through ratchets. High end vs low end
Hart is Walmart. Can't get any lower than that besides hyper tough another Walmart brand.
I can't speak about their pass through ratchets but I had a family member buy me a huge collection of hart tools from Walmart a bunch of sockets ratchets and misc tools I can say for a fact their ratchets and sockets are nowhere near snap on or mac ive pulled on hart sockets barely at full strength and had the head of the socket just spread open untill it can no longer continue to grip the bolt

I knew these were as tough as regular ratchets. I've been using the Pittsburgh one since it came out. It's made in Taiwan and has a comfort grip. Excellent quality.

@@user-xe9ue2jr2w It is just branded Pittsburgh, but the chrome finish, fitment, are the same quality as the pro. It has the Snap-On style comfort grip, but in green and black. look up some UA-cam reviews, it is actually one of Harbor Freight's best ratchets even though it is not Pro or Icon.
I have a Crescent pass through set in the handle of an adjustable wrench. It's been handy to keep in my vehicle or toolbag for unexpected repairs
I picked up the Hart set. I figure you can't go wrong for $22, as little as I need it. Seems pretty solid.

I got that Stanley and it's awesome love that I can use the sockets with a 15mm or 17mm i forget which but i can use them with my torque wrench too.
I still have my Kobalt pass-throughs from when they were sold at Lowe's, Never had any issues.
I bought a gearwrench passthrough set about 20 years ago when I worked at NAPA. I couldn't really afford it but had charged to my employee account. That was my go-to ratchet until it got stolen a coupe years back. So for at least 15 maybe 17 years it survived heavy diy/neighborhood mechanic duty.

I own the gear wrench 1/2” bolt through. I’ve actually stood on it before to break a 1” bolt and nut. Been using it for several years with no issues. Also it’s the floppy head ratchet.
I owned one of the Stanley sets and really liked the six-point ratchet, sockets, and great handle. I was only able to find more socket options with Bostich. Stanley's warranty is great but you do have to mail it in (maybe Walmart if you bought it there?). The packaging for this pass-through ratchet is only good for the store, not the user and I recommend the way Kobalt did its pass-through sockets with the removable trays; but add some small magnets to the bottom and the Kobalt trays are perfect. Great video!

Many many years ago I was lucky enough to be taken on a school trip to visit Stanley Tools Engineering in Halifax. Apart from being impressed by the beauty of the tools, my abiding memory is of the man with a wonderful Yorkshire accent who had been showing us around then asking us all to turn out our pockets on leaving. The teacher that was with us looked horrified, but we all thought it was great. For my 21st birthday I was given a set of Stanley Chisels which are still in use today some 65 years later.

Ive had the cornwell pass thru set for like 10yrs now. I actually have 2 of them since i found a second set really cheap. I love my cornwell pass thru sets. Smoothest and least backlash ratchet ive ever used. Its not a flip switch to reverse, you flip the whole ratchet/put the socket through the other side so i imagine that has a lot to do with how smooth it is and probably gearless

I recently bought the Gearwrench pass through 1/4” and 3/8” sets, and the set of Allen, torx, flat and Phillips bits for them, metric and inch in the set. The wrench sets also have inch and metric. They both come with adapters for standard 1/4” or 3/8” depending on the wrench kit size.
I much prefer the heavy duty cases of the Gearwrench.
I don’t test my tools, but I’ve never had one break. I know some guys take no care of their tools, and over torque them, then they break. I’d just rather just get the proper tool.
You should get ahold of the Crescent pass thru. The one that is also a crescent wrench and pipe wrench (this last but is the movable wrench jaw with teeth on the back and supposedly can be used in a pinch for a pipe wrench.
I saw them and they seemed slightly gimmicky to me, but could be useful to someone that wants a multi-tool to attempt to replace a few tools in one.
They will in fact work as a pipe wrench, tested and confirmed lol. If you don't like the multi tool aspect they make the X6 in regular pass thru ratchet form as well
@@ClientGraphics I have one BECAUSE it claimed to be a multitool design. My problem with it was not the "pipe wrench" or the odd handle that you get if you use the ratchet, but the fact that the coating of paint or die is absolutely the least rustproof coating I've ever seen. I had it get misted on once and it had 10 or 20 spots of rust on it...
I just think it would be interesting to see how it works, if Stanley, of all the tool companies, can make a 325ft lb pass thru!

I don't think there will be any situation where you will really need a pass through ratchet. A box end will do just fine in your example situation, and if you need ratcheting action, you can always grab the ratcheting wrench
I used mine for my tensioner pulley, because it was too tight of a space for a normal ratchet to fit. They do have their uses. I only bought it because it was on sale for $12
I use my Cobalt set on the pipeline to do tighten up dresser couplings for gas pipe a normal deep well is not deep enough for the long bolts
I use mine to adjust the valves on my honda lol it's perfect for putting a flat head through although a wrench works fine but busts my knuckles everytime. And I'm too cheap to spend 40dlr on a valve adjustment tool

I have a gearwrench 3/8 pass through (the long handle set) and a 1/2 pass through set. Both of them claim 40% stronger than traditional ratchets by eliminating the drive tang. It is great if we can see how they will stand up to the test. I believe the 3/8 gearwrench one is stronger than the ones you tested.
I purchased a Kobalt pass-thru ratchet kit. It includes a 1/4 drive. 3/8 drive and 1/2 drive ratchet. Has both SAE and metric sockets with adapters for various applications. Had this kit for about 10 years ago and no issues. Nice case it comes in and I store it in the bottom drawer of my toolbox. Get it out and take it with me. Would like you to test the Kobalt pass-thru 3/8 ratchet.
Great video! It would have been great to have seen the internals of those ratchets after. I don’t know if those were sealed units though.
The pass-thru are sealed with an internal snap ring. The Tech Correct Ratchet was flawless internally so nothing to see really. The Stanley was really deformed and I could probably knock the internals out on the vise with a few wacks on a punch.

Dont have a pass thru ratchet but i have double boxed end ratchet wrench set from HF.. they work well when the situation calls for it
Use my pass through all the time when changing struts and sway bar links. These things work awesome for those jobs. My only complaint with them is that the sockets come out of the ratchet quite easily.
I have the Grearwrench Pass Thru 1/4 and 3/8" sets (still looking for the 1/2" set - hard to find). Well made, but I was really surprised pass thru sets can handle the load. Typically I would not try to use them under high stress situations, but it appears they may actually hold up just fine.
the half inch set doesn't even show up on their website.
@@dreadswizzard9142 It has been unavailable for a while... and very hard to find. I've been trying to get my hands on a 1/2" set for more than a year now. You can find some of the individual sockets, but the set and individual handle are next to impossible. Not sure why, since the 3/8 and 1/4 sets are popular.
The gear wrench pass through ratchets are AWESOME
I own the 1/4" and 3/8" sets, theyre xtra-long handle, locking flex head, very low profile and obviously pass through
But what's also super sweet is the set comes with a locking adapter that allows you to use any of your normal sockets
their half inch flexhead is awesome too; great around trailers.

Menards makes a 1/4 and 3/8 set that I think is the most complete I could find. It's masterforce but pretty sure it's made alongside the gearwrench.

stanley surprised me but not as much as the 3/8 inch bostitch ratchet i used with a cheater bar to take off a lug nut. it survived and worked as normal ever since.

I have one of the first Stanley pass through ratchets I bought off the MAC tool truck back in early 2000's . The Torque rating was not as high as the one you showed . Not sure what the rating is though . I also have the Matco Pass-through ratchet sets . Both still work fine .
I have a Craftsman set that has served me well and I never expected it to take as much abuse as a standard set. But when you need one of these there is absolutely nothing else like it.
What about the craftsman? I've had mine for several years and they still work great

I have a old Matco pass through ratchet and air ratchet set from over 20 years ago. I’ve never had any issues with slippage or strength but I did loose a retainer clip in the ratchet which is no longer available. I had this before I ever saw any type of ratcheting combination wrench that we have today,

I've looked at them several times but never bought one because I just can't see the value of one of these sets If you own a set of ratcheting wrenches that already accomplish the exact same task.

Its pretty obvious.... These can do literally everything that a regular ratchet can plus they are more compact.
Stanley has a come a long way in their ratchets. Used to be if you wanted a cheap set for your car or truck, you bought a Stanley set at Walmart, threw away the ratchets and replaced them with something else, i.e., Power Torque, GearWrench or something else. I've broken several Stanley ratchets, put some standard GearWrench in place of the Stanley and the work just great. The Stanley sockets seem fine, no problem with those, but it is good to see that the Stanley ratchets today have much improved build quality.
I'm pretty impressed. I figure the 3/8 ratchet may be designed to shear though to protect the internals. Lots can be repaired fairly easily

I was hoping you would test the Stanley after failure, it seemed like it was doing the mastercraft failure mode of switching to loosen automatically, you have to tighten something then switch it, and those mastercraft ones suck to switch modes from new even so there’s no telling if it got harder
I have the HF pass through. It isn’t as strong but the sockets work with an 19 mm wrench.
I have the kobalt version of this and I was wondering about this after seeing videos on another channel. It seems that the failure point for a normal ratchet is the square drive, the passthrough eliminates that.

Bought some Duralast pass through from autozone to remove shocks from struts and man when you need them you need them!
The Duralast one’s are really similar to the Husky from Home Depot.
Could a ratcheting wrench do the same job? Or was the size of the nut super big?
Nick Shows Stuff actually the nut was recessed where a normal wrench or ratcheting wouldn’t reach. Yes it would pass through but the top mount of the strut was in the way still

Only a very old one which is a 10mm standard vs 10mm ratcheting wrench. They are both not common brands so I should put that on the to do list sometime.
This is your best video in terms of results. The Stanley pass thru beating snap on ratchet. I have never met a Stanley fan boy but know several snap on fan boys. What say u
I know a few Stanley fans but most of there stuff is older and I have a good amount of Stanley stuff myself. I can’t justify a SnapOn/Blue Point pass-thru ratchet set but a good set of reversible ratcheting wrenches to me are just as good. Some of the Astro stuff with the nano sockets would be very similar to a pass thru set.

Chai Yu Chen filed for and received the first patent for the pass-through wrench in Taiwan.... when looking at the exploded drawings of the wrench it looks exactly like the Pittsburgh pass-through socket wrench and set

If you can get a hold of one you should test the Micro-Tough Ratchet that was once sold under MAC, Stanley, Husky, and Proto brands. While they were one of the strongest and smallest ratchets you could buy they had one flaw that took them off the market. Dirt easily got into the works and made them free spin. This knocks them out as a daily driver but they are still great for tight spaces.
I have both the Stanley and Husky versions and they worked great up until that first few lockup’s or slips and then you couldn’t fix it. I have another Micro-Tough ratchet without a handle that I may sacrifice one day.🤞
@@ClientGraphics So if the issue is oil or dirt which is most common. They can be fixed. If you take a box cutter and pry up the front of the switch (opposite the handle) their is a hidden snap ring. Take a second box cutter and run it down the side of the thumb portion of the switch and you should be able to hook the snap ring and pull it out. Once you have the snap ring out you can carefully pry up on the front side of the switch until it comes out. Now you can pull the guts and clean them up and re-assemble This usually fixes the lockup and slip issue. Watch the de tent pin it will fall out. Also it has to be installed via the hole in the switch during re-assembly. I have a full set 1/4",3/8",&1/2" that I purchased from Mac 20 years ago the 3/8" is the only one that has given me trouble probably because its the most used. Every time it does I clean it and it works again.
I carry an old craftsman ratchet set in my general purpose tool box. I do almost no work on cars and I don't use the ratchet set very often and then when I might use it many times there is a bolt that sticks out too far for it. These pass through ratchets look like they might be much more useful in a general purpose tool box than a standard ratchet set.
Why didn't you test the harbor freight one I use it at my shop all the time and it's great
I got a pass through socket set for christmas. My simple review is "cool but unnecessary". While I definitely won't complain about having them, they aren't something I would ever buy myself. I do use them, but I have yet to use them on something that I couldn't have used a normal ratchet on.
I bought a kit from Harbor Freight for hanging unistrut with 1/2" threaded rod.
Made life so much easier.
Hi are these suitable tonne used on like a shock absorber top mount where you’ll have a nut on a thread and on top of the thread you have a Torx or Allan key?hope you know what I mean

Good info; but a hardened 5/8 in. SAE J429 Grade 5 bolt's Tightening Torque is only 150 ft. lbs. for course thread and 170 for fine thread. The bolt should break before the ratchet.
I broke 3/8 drive on my ratcheting breaker bar. Wonder if it can be replaced or repaired....?
I wonder how they compare to a set of ratcheting wrenches. I have a set of metric and probably covers most of my use cases. However they are clearly not as comfortable. I wonder how strong they are. Have you tested them before?

People have knocked Stanley Tools for years but I have always had success with them ....yeah the pliers are small the screwdrivers are chincy and the ratchets don't have very long handles on them... but they work! another reason why my hand tools sets that I keep in my vehicles are DeWalt because one thing that Stanley Black & Decker does do fairly well and my opinion is make good hand tools.... and bits...
It would have been an all out Walmart showdown if both the Ultra Steel and Bostitch pass through ratchets were also included.

If you think about it, many of the ratchets failed at the 3/8 neck, so I wasn't surprised that the ones that were not limited by that (e.g. passthrough) performed much better. I'll be honest though, I think I would just pay a little bit more and get a full set of ratcheting box end wrenches so they are as thin as possible, negating the socket completely. Keep up the great work! As silly as this sounds, it would be good to see some testing on #2 phillips screwdrivers. How much toruhe they can take before camming-out and slipping. Obviously, you would have to put a wrench on the neck - something that not all screwdrivers can do. I have some cheap harbor freight #2 bits for my impact driver and they cam out and/or crack fairly easily. I bought some makita ones that have a gritty coating on them, and they work way better, last a lot longer before they start camming-out and slipping (Happens when the gritty coating wears off). Most of my screwdrivers are older and don't have the gritty coating, so all of mine are pretty lousy.

@@jonmeray713 Agreed, but if you only got half an inch of width to squeeze a wrench in there, you gotta do what you gotta do. Usually and thankfully those are M6/10mm head bolts that don't require a ton of torque.

These tests I guess are practical if all you care about is putting pipes on things and putting way more torque on them then they should have. But hey, gotta test everything about em. Including when they break lol
