I feel like you should find *suitable* names and bios when naming characters in this series instead of picking completely at random. It's a bit silly when scientists and engineers are getting bios what are obviously intended as soldier backstories, and quite ridiculous when an enemy VIP gets one. Maybe divide the names into categories - soldier, engie, scientist, enemy - and then pick randomly within the relevant category?
@@macdjord I'm a bit late to the party but here's how it works for XCOM 2: Pete *doesn't* pick from a list, the game does - you load a list of generated characters into the game and it picks from them every time a non predetermined character is needed (some are fixed, like Mox). When a Patron/supporter submits a character *they* get to choose what roles their character can appear as (soldier, engineer, scientist, and yes, even enemy VIP) the person who exports the character and sends it in to Pete gets to pick this. Most supporters are selecting all options, as it means there's a greater chance of the game picking them, and therefore a greater chance of them getting their character into the recordings. I, personally, don't begrudge them this, even if it means that sometimes the bios don't make much sense.
Isn't Elerium also the research you need to fix your power issues? That seems pretty important right now, although you do have the power cores at the bottom of the Avenger still waiting to be exploited.
Pete - Regretfully launches a grenade directly at a civilian Nicholas - "Catch!" I'm dying 🤣 Also, the Advanced Trooper was the most under fire that mission. That's pretty neat.
Elerium for sure. You get access to better weapons and also the ability to upgrade power stations which is something you're in short supply of right now. Psu lab itself takes a lot of power and has a high cost so even with it on a coil, it doesn't make much sense at this stage in the game.
A bit dicey there for a moment but you prevailed like always :) nice one Pete :) Totally go for the Elerium and plasma stuff, more powerful enemies are coming, best to be prepared :)
Just saying, psionics are also good for preparing against stronger enemies. They have guaranteed damage skills that I'm certain Pete could use, or even defensive skills that can save a lot of his soldiers from getting yeeted.
That was not easy, but your skill and the way you have built and equipped your soldiers made the difference. There were several ways that could have gone south. Well done!
Guns. Always go for guns. The best defense is a high offence, and the best offence is the most brutal and efficient one. Dishing out the highest amount of damage possible will allow you to push harder for 100%'s in operations with brutes or other high-hitpoints enemies when the clock is ticking down, not to mention that the shotgun upgrade already showed how nice is to have a high minimum damage on a 100%.
Recommended Research Choice: Elerium Reasoning: While the Psi troops are, in my opinion, extremely useful I can't recommend that that is the path to take if you can't start progress towards the Psi Lab's construction. Elerium is the research subject I'd choose as its not only just a step in the path of plasma weapons but it will help improve power situation on the Avenger - which will facilitate the construction of the Psi Lab.
Usually the psy lab goes on a power coil. So that part of your argument should be put to the side. But if he really wanted to he could get that bottom left power coil open for the psy lab very close to the amount of time it takes to research.
Another great episode Pete, I just found this series and am binging my way through it. Just wanted to say though you need to be more careful if you get another of these missions as the VIP actually counts as part of your squad once you've picked them up. I got into a similar situation on one such mission and placed the VIP on the ground next to the car just as you did. Then on the enemy turn a Muton and a Heavy Mech both used their explosives as they saw two units close together, blowing up the car and costing me a soldier and the VIP.
Hey Pete thanks for the episode, and hope you feel better soon! Also, I think elerium would be best as it could help quicker and more effectively the team you have already made.
Started playing XCOM because of you. My very first game, on the very first proper mission, I lost 3/4 of my crew and gravely injured the other. I then proceeded to lose one person every single mission until I quit because I had so little healthy soldiers I didn't find it reasonable to continue playing that save. I was playing on Veteran. I'm doing a lot better now, but that's probably because I'm playing on Rookie now.
@@bruhder5854 Genuinely horrible tactical decision. This is my first turn based strategy game. I take multiple minutes per turn now so I can make absolute sure the moves I make are as best as possible... Didn't stop me placing my only grenadier against a wall that a faceless destroyed which just so happened to have an explosive on the other side of the wall 🤡
@@ocarina0001 yeah first time was rough for me too. I'd played some turn based games back when I was a kid but nothing like this. Needless to say, game quickly became one of my favorites. The initial learning curve is punishing but as you learn through the mistakes and come out on top, the satisfaction is immense when you plan things and they work like you'd hoped for.
Definitely would like to see psyionics as the next research, for now the soldiers are dealing enough damage and its better to unlock these new psy operatives sooner than later so they can level up and build bonds.
It's just as entertaining to watch you walk "close to disaster" as gliding smoothly to enemy armies. Well fought mission! As for the next research, I'd go with the elerium. Psyonics sure would be nice to have as soon as possible, but it is extremely expensive in power.
PSI operatives take a long time to train so it's better to unlock them earlier. Also, psi lab is one of the two buildings better built on the power link. So, your call, but I'd go with psionics and prioritize clearing out the power link below the currently ongoing excavation.
Hey Pete ! Great episode as always ! I think you should go for the psionics research first. Because the psi soldiers are way more interesting in XCOM 2 than they was in Ennemy Within and some of them would bring some cool new faces to the cast of this series as well as providing more diversity in missions. I don't thing you need plasma weapons right now, your soldiers are already strong enough to deal with the threats you face at this point in the game so adding them now would make this walktrought way too easy to be fun to watch.
Psionics would be my choosing here, the amount of tactics that a fully fledged psi solder would bring to the field is incredible it could also give ring a chance to ethier inspire another research option or reduce the amount of time for elerium.
Thanks for the great content again. I hope you get better soon. I'm actually having a flu myself at the moment so I share your pain :D I would go for the psionics first as the training for psi ops also takes a lot of time.
I have to say, discovering your pinpoint strategies and insane planning is just so satisfying to see For the next research, I think Psionics is gonna be a bit too ambitious for now - Elerium is a safer option I think
I really like the psionics here. While damage is good it feels like damage is not an issue for now whereas psionics can bring more diversity to team compositions and give more options I know it would take some time, but I think it would be nicer to start working on it sooner rather then later
Hello Pete ! Great episode as always. I'm wondering why you do not use the skirmisher or XCOM's AP points to get more than one upgrade for faction soldiers ? It can get quite powerful
The Psi lab is one of the two facilities that should be installed on the exposed conduit, setting their energy cost to 0 (the other being shadow chamber). Thus, you'll need to clear out the bottom floor first. Elerium on the other hand gets you the elerium conduit upgrade immediately, meaning power for upgrading comms and for a new room in the soon to be cleared space
I know a lot of people are saying elerium but i would open that power coil and research psy at the same time. On top of having to do that it also takes a long time to train them to be useful.
Elerium is a prerequisite for the top tier guns and armor, so I'd choose that. Psionics is not really necessary at all--at the stage when you can have Psi operatives, you will already have so many other powerful soldiers that psionics isn't needed. You can pick that up later of course, for completionism.
For Covert Ops, I'd say do the Resistance Contact Next, then, try to squeeze in the Facility Lead. That way, you can get the continent bonus for Africa, and Blacksite access and have two ways to reduce Avatar Progress in your back pocket.
great vid, still watching, wanna suggest another inmersion mod, theres seems to be a mod that makes civilians react to threats, they wont pick up guns and 'murica advent. but they will try to get away from silly harmless things like turrets and granades, if you wanna give it a go
For sure research elerium, you don’t have there space or power for a psi lab rn. Also another research option is the faceless autopsy, it is one of the few autopsies worth doing early because the mimic beacon is really good in tough situations (if it’s in an enemy’s line of sight I believe they’re guaranteed to target the mimic beacon)
When you finish Xcom, you should consider Midnight Suns. It's like a cross between Xcom2, Hearthstone and Mass Effect. I reckon you could get all but two achievements in one playthrough too. Plenty of room for min maxing but with a little rng to spice things up too.
I'd say focus on get a room ready that has no upkeep cost and put in the psyonics there - this would save 10 power total. Other problems are the long study time (and randomness) of the psy-soldier ... on the other hand it's acompletionist playthrough so you need to have one fully "learned", right? Right? :P As such the elyrium tech seems more useable immidiatly, doubly so because it allows to upgrade your power room(s) for a bit more juice. And the new techs behind it are worth their while. At the end it will be one or the other first, then the other it feels like
While plasma weapons would be nice, the amount of time needed to train and bond psionic soldiers is definitely something to consider, so I think if you can get Psioncs earlier I would.
Since the psi lab isn't going to be built anytime soon and it's not that slow to research anyway, I'd say go for elerium so you're better equipped to upgrade weapons if you have to do so in a pinch. Also doesn't elerium allow you to upgrade your power which is a roadblock to psi labs anyway
Doesn't the Muton Autopsy also give access to Plasma Grenades? Very useful upgrade... Of course, it's been many campaigns since I ran a game without a pile of mods, so I might be wrong there...
I'd go for the elerium at this stage of the game, it's gonna pay off hugely sooner rather than later. And as much as psionics would be cool...ya have an energy problem which elerium very nicely solves for ya.
Psi Lab would be cool... but do you have the resources to actually go through with it? If no and if you can't finagle a way to speed that up, then you should go for Elerium.

I'd say start on the research that's needed eventually for plasma weapons and while you are working on that research work on your power problem for the psionic slab. Like that would be a bit more efficient than researching the psionic labs first. Having the research sit dead in the water for however long it takes you to get the extra power when you could have been researching something more useful just doesn't make sense to me. Even if you get the power situation figured out before the plasma stuff is done, researching you're at least advancing towards something, in the scionics don't seem absolutely required at this point.
