Daylilies are tough as nails! As a southern gardener and an archaeologist I know that they take clay soil and moist soil like a champ. I’ve rarely ever seen them wilt in the heat either. And the plant colonies they form through spreading can last easily over 100 years. I find them still living and blooming at old home sites from the 1800’s all the time. The basic orange variety was popular historically, with yellow less commonly.

My parents have some of the ancestors of George Washington’s daylilies. They were sold at Mount Vernon in the late 90s, and we bought some. They’re still thriving in their backyard in Georgia today. They’re yellow!

Do you know if the orange ones were called "Orange Tiger Lilies" back in the day? I live in Kentucky and these things grow about anywhere. I ask because I can remember my mother and g-mother calling them Tiger Lilies. It seemed they would plant them everywhere, I'm sure because they were free.😊
I have some of these orange lilies that I actually dug up from a ditchline, brought home and planted. It was around 5 plants. There is now a small hedge of them, around 10-12 mounds, they do multiply. I have moved them around my yard multiple times for various reason. I must say they are in bloom now and absolutely stunning.

Fun fact: all daylilies come from an orange or yellow parent. Obviously, these are all Proven Winners varieties, but it you want to branch out I highly, highly recommend Oakes Daylilies. The number of varieties they have is incredible, and they send you a free plant with every order. (I’m not affiliated, just a fan)

I'm sure she can, but please note that sterile varieties (most Proven Winners plants) only provide nectar, not pollen or seeds, so they aren't as beneficial to wildlife. It's best to at least have a good mix of natives, non-sterile cultivars and sterile for wildlife.

Daylilies are so underrated! When most people think of them it’s the typical orange variety that was in your Memaw’s garden. I have some of the same varieties that you just showed and they are rockstars in our southern AL heat. We are in the mid 90’s with heat indexes of about 105 right now and they handle the weather like champs!

    • @galakrupa469
      @galakrupa469 2 роки тому +1

I totally agree. They are rock stars. They do handle the heat and weather like a champ. If your on the fence get them you won't regret it. I live in AL also and cut some and brought them in to enjoy in my house. I love them. I have 3 of the ones she planted in this video and they are gorgeous.

Hey! Not that you’ll probably end up seeing this, but two videos I’d love to see: one just about at what times of year you cut different things back. We have a bunch of things in our garden that have just been there for years and we don’t have tags, and I never know if I should cut it back at some point. I always notice things only have buds on new growth and I wish I cut them before! Otherwise, I’d just love to see a tour of all the machines you seem to have! Maybe it could be an Aaron video :)

I can't say enough good things about these 2 perennials. People stop & stare because they're so pretty & most importantly a happy uplifting colour to have in your garden. These will be gorgeous! I keep doing the math though…11 x ~$20 in the one area alone! I absolutely realize that this is a business (thank you!), but not many of us can plant over $500 in flowers daily. I’m one of those living vicariously through you! (I’d have to buy 2 of each one and then wait to divide them over a few years to get drifts that big!)

Last year they didn’t. Sound of my Heart has so many bloom stalks right now and Storm Shelter is getting them as well. So excited because I love them so much!! Laura, loved your video on daylilies. I have over 300 different colors in my gardens. As of 2018, there were over 80,000 registered daylilies. I think their would probably be a color for everyone's taste. Daylilies like moisture, but they don't like wet feet, so well drained soil is a must. They like moisture , but they are drought tolerant.

It's a good rule of green thumb to not plant anything under or around daylilies. that would restrict the airflow and harbor rust and other diseases and pests as would the practice of not removing dead foliage when they die down. I generally trim mine down at the end of the season one by one as the scapes finish blooming out.

Distracted by the Forest Pansy Redbud...I don't remember the video of you planting it, or maybe it wasn't leafed out. would love to know more about that Redbud. And those plum colored Storm Shelter lilies will look amazing there.

Thanks Laura! You provide motivation for me to get out of my garden each day. I love the day lilies and I'm thinking about going to the nursery and picking up a few of the more interesting ones especially the ones that bloom twice. I love having something in bloom every week.

I would love a video of showing the actual blooms of things you have planted. I always find the photos on tags and on the internet to be different than what the flower actually looks like in my garden. It’s due to natural lighting, sub optimal growing conditions, etc. Still love the plants but just know when I buy things that it may not look exactly like the tag. Would love to see some of your first year plants blooming to get and idea of what’s first year plant may look like too. We all know the sleep, creep, leap story and it’s nice to see what they look like in those first two years vs later.

I love daylilies I had to transplant most of mine this year for a new fence and walkway. I started adding them 2 years ago and snag every new variety they get in my area lol. I love your property and taste in bed design. It suits my likes as well.

Aaron, would you do a video on converting a sprinkler head into a drip irrigation? I put in a sprinkler system and later put in a flowerbed. One of the sprinkler heads is now in my new flowerbed and is beating my plants to pieces.

You can cap off that one head but you really can’t convert one head to drip. I have converted a whole zone and converter piece just screws into where a head is and then reduces the water pressure.

Good news! Mighty Chestnut daylily has been around for quite some time and is available for anybody who wants to get ahold of it! It is not a Proven Winners exclusive variety, so I can find it at virtually every garden center in my area. I have some in my garden and they are beautiful!

Morning! This reminds me of childhood. My Grandma had a "lily ring" that stood about waist high with beautiful orange flowers. The varieties now are simply stunning. Thank you for bringing back memories 😊🌳🌿🌼

I just planted Siloam peony daylilies late last summer, but the foliage is darker than yours. Hope yours do stay brighter ;). Mine were a garden center rescue, a few tired leftover plants with one faded, but gorgeous, bloom left, couldn't resist. I can't wait to see what they look like this year.

Foxglove are poisonous plants (roots, stems, leaves...the entire plant) and I'm told critters including deer know that so they tend to stay away. Maybe strategically plant foxglove around your garden or among your garden plants to deter the deer. Also, someone told me about motion detectors for deer. Amazon sells them. I've never tried them, but may be worth the investment if they work. I've tried Irish Spring soap, cut up in pieces and I take a piece of old fabric and make a "sachet" using a zip tie. I tie the sachets around the garden on stakes. This method has worked for both deer and rabbits. There are deer repellent mixtures that are sold in Home Depot. Hope this helps! Good luck!
