Have to say. Mangalore should perhaps be called the Home of Ice Cream in India. Brilliant parlours with some rather original concoctions.
I love Ideals and Pabbas. But you’d be surprised to know that if you go to places like Moodbodri or Udupi or Mulki or Kinnigoli for eg, you’d still get a decent ice cream sundae there too
.
Plus Mangalore also has some decent savoury food offerings. The Hindus have brilliant food as is but the Catholic community there have brilliant food too. And if you have no aversion to Pork or beef, you’d get a decent Non veggie fare there. Oh and I haven’t even spoken of the fish.
A good destination for foodies. Love Mangalore.

Yes, the ice cream creations in Mangalore are simply brilliant. Haven’t checked out much in the other areas around, but will when the opportunity presents itself.

Well Mangalore is known as the ice-cream capital of India
The founder of Diana in Udupi, Mr. Mohandas Pai has to be credited with the creation of the now-famous Gadbad ice cream.
Prabhakar Kamath, founder of Ideals Ice cream Mangalore and his son Mukund however have taken Sundaes to another level. Gadbad, Parfait at Ideal's and Pabbas are simply wow.
Pabbas (Ideal).. Probably the best ice creams I have tasted in my life ever.. Just too good for those who crave for ice creams and a must visit place when u r in Mangalore howevr short the visit may be. Apart from the above ice creams, Kripal I think u missed tasting a variety named Parfait. The best one of course after Gadbad. Do taste when u get a chance to visit next time..Thank you for posting such amzing outlets and make us enjoy the food just by watching ur vedios and ur amazing narrations..Love it..
Gadbad started in a hotel named Diana in udupi and this ice cream receipe was done in a hurry burry to its customer and hence termed as gadbad.

Old Diana we visit on our way to kollur.very good hotel. Now it shifted and old quality gone.
Actually it was first made in Kamath Hotel, but Diana made it famous.

One thing to be clarified -
Gudbud was created in a restaurant from Udupi called Hotel Kamath (doesn't exist now).
As of what I've heard:
One day a foreigner had come to Udupi and he orders for an ice cream sundae. The hotel owner confused or in a hurry ('Gadibidi' which means hurry in Kannada or Tulu) gives him what is known as 'Gudbud'. That was the origin of the Ice cream. Later 'Gudbud' got its fame from Hotel Diana in Udupi which still exists.

My all time favorite among all the favorites is the humble ice lolly in all 3 flavors orange pineapple and cola
I actually packed 25 of them from mangalore to Bangalore. They melted obviously, I refreezed them and relished them for a week thereafter.
Bella Ice Candy was local ice candy. In 80's people used to sell ice candies in cart and they had regular ice candies in different flavours and bella ice candy. Ice Candy business slowly faded away with Walls climbing up the ladder. I am glad that Ideal restored it, but from nostalgic point of view its not the same. Thank you for covering Pabbas Ice Cream.

I have been having ice creams of Ideal's since childhood days, back then it was only one parlour, now they have 2-3 parlours . It's always in 'must do' list every time I visit my native Mlr. Quality is as superb as it was before, reasonably priced. Their veg cutlet n veg sandwich too is tasty. Missing it....
Gadbad ice-cream was invented in Udupi at HOTEL DIANA which started in 1972 much before IDEAL .. accidentally when they had to serve 20 customers with different ice-creams they had, the then owner mixed all of them together with some nuts and jelly and a new ice-cream recipe was born,, so the legend goes...

You were enjoying the signature Gadbad and I liked the usage: We got to go all the way down, get all the layers and literally make a "GADBAD"out of it to get the full flavors"!. This type of usage adds more punch or softness as the case may be to a dish description. Well chosen words, Mr Amanna!
I m very lucky bcoz I m from Mangalore and whenever I visit Mangalore I go there two to three times . All deserts and snacks are very delicious

Maria D'souza yes Bella candy is the old favourite of all those guys who grew up in 80’s and 90’s in mangalore . But the new Bella candy introduced in ideals doesn’t live up to the mark , nothing like what we have tasted in our childhood .

Also - the temperature of the ice cream in Pabbas is different from other ice creams u find anywhere. The temp is higher and hence edible easily in gulps. U end up eating 2-3 bowls of ice cream in one sitting. These details - helps if u add.

The Gadbad originated in Diana Icecream Parlour at Udupi as early as 1976. At that time that parlour was the only one offering it on the menu.
They also had a speciality called cold horlicks cake.....slurp!...
